Donna Pierce might hear voices, but that doesn’t mean she’s crazy. Probably.
The voices do serve their purpose, though—whenever Donna hears them, she knows she’s in danger. So when they start yelling at the top of their proverbial lungs, it’s no surprise she and her best friend, Deke, end up narrowly escaping a zombie horde. Alone without their families, they take refuge at their high school with the super-helpful nerds, the bossy head cheerleader, and—best of all?—Lance, hottie extraordinaire and Donna’s long-time crush. When Lance is around, it’s easy to forget about the moaning zombies, her dad’s plight to reach them, and how weird Deke is suddenly acting toward her.
But as the teens’ numbers dwindle and their escape plans fall apart, Donna has to listen to the secrets those voices in her head have been hiding. It seems not all the zombies are shuffling idiots, and the half-undead aren’t really down with kids like Donna…
Review
I received Donna of the Dead in return for an honest
review as part of the tour hosted by Rockstar Book Tours. Donna isn’t normal
her eyes are silver which has always made her different from the other kids but
at 8 she started hearing voices. What should be a quiet cruise for the
Thanksgiving week is anything but when a virus outbreak happens in China. It
quickly spreads across the world moving across the United States overnight.
When the crew finds someone with the virus they are sent to quarantine but
within hours the ship is overrun by zombies.
Thanks to her father Donna and Deke are dropped off on
the dock with hopes of staying safe till they can find a ship that isn’t
overrun and loaded with food. Donna and Deke head off for their old
neighborhood but while passing their school the voices tell her to stop. They
learn that a few of the students are living in the school safe from the
zombies. However after entering the school they learn that the zombies aren’t
all slow but one who wears a hat is like a super zombie. Will they make it away
from the school? Will her dad find a cruise ship for them to hide out on? Will they
find a cure in time?
I like Donna she’s not a little frustrating because she’s
obsessed with a guy over everything else. However she’s a teenager so you have
to accept that they are a little self-centered besides her life hasn’t been
perfect. I like Deke as a character he’s the good guy who took care of Donna throughout
the book. I like that the survivors aren’t jocks but the nerdy robotics’ kids.
I love zombie stories so of course I jumped at the chance
to read Donna of the Dead. This is actually the second zombie book that
involves a cruise ship which makes me giggle because it’s not the first thing I
think of for zombies. However that being said I enjoyed the book. It’s filled
with action that keeps the story flying by, it was hard to put down and I lost
all track of time reading. I was able to read the book in an afternoon which is
great because I tend to have zombie nightmares. I think the author did a
fantastic job taking the job concept and putting her own unique twists on the
story. A must read if you like zombie stories I can see teens as well as adults
falling in love with the characters.

About Alison:
Alison Kemper grew up in South Florida, the only girl on a street with eleven boys. She spent most of her childhood paddling a canoe through neighborhood canals and looking for adventure. She usually found it. Sometimes the police were involved. And large dogs. And one time, a very territorial snake. She now lives in North Carolina and writes books. The books often include girls having adventures. With boys. Cute boys. And cute dogs too. But no cute snakes. Never cute snakes.
Her debut novel, Donna of the Dead, will be published by Entangled Teen in 2014 and followed by two companion novels. She loves to meet new people and talk books, so send her a friend request or connect with her on Twitter and Instagram.
