Interview with Kristy Woodson Harvey

Today I'm thrilled to share with you an interview with a very talented author Kristy Woodson Harvey. She has two novels out Dear Carolina and Lies and Other Acts of Love which just came out. She was wonderful to answer all my questions. I hope you enjoy reading her answers as much as I did.

Also be sure to check out a Guest post about her favorite book (here)

On to the Interview
Mandy - When did you decide to become a writer?
Kristy - I decided I wanted to be a journalist when I was in high school. I had an internship at my local newspaper that led to a weekly column. I went to journalism school and did a lot of freelance writing, but writing a novel was a bit of a random idea. I decided I didn’t have anything to lose (but a little time!) so I went for it. And I’m so glad I did! I feel like I have found what I was meant to do.

Mandy - Do you write on a typewriter, computer, dictate or longhand?
Kristy - Computer! I’m a very fast typer (thank goodness…) so sometimes I’ll try to create voice memos when I’m driving and then transcribe them. But what I think sounds good when I’m saying it sounds awful when I write it down! I think there’s some sort of magic that happens when my fingers are connected to the keyboard.

Mandy - What does your writing space look like?
Kristy - I have this beautiful office with a gorgeous marble desk, but I’m a full-time mom, so, quite honestly, I write anywhere and everywhere! At soccer practice, Starbucks, in the car when my son falls asleep… I sort of fit it in where I can so I’m so very lucky that I don’t need to be in a certain place to make it work.

Mandy - If Dear Carolina was made into a movie who would play Khaki, Jodi and Carolina?
Kristy - (Dear Carolina has been optioned for film—we haven’t announced it yet, so shhhh ;)—, so I’m going to hold off on these because we might be able to have real answers in a few weeks!

Mandy - What do you do to take a break from writing?
Kristy - Honestly, writing is my break from everything else! It is my “me” time and how I unwind.

Mandy - Do you have an author your look up to?
Kristy - Oh, wow. Yes! So, so many of them. Elin Hilderbrand has been one of my idols for years, and I have been lucky enough to meet her several times—and she wrote the most beautiful endorsement for LIES AND OTHER ACTS OF LOVE. I also got to meet Jennifer Weiner, which was incredible. I love Patti Callahan Henry and have gotten so much great guidance from Kim Boykin, Ann Garvin, Sonja Yoerg, Eileen Goudge, Cathy Lamb, Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke… The list goes on and on. I have found authors, as a whole, to be incredibly generous and so supportive.

Mandy - Why should we read Dear Carolina?
Kristy I have been so blown away by the way readers have connected to DEAR CAROLINA. It has been such a joy to hear people’s stories about the ways in which they created their families, and I consider that a huge gift. But I think people should read it because there are some serious topics at hand but, overall, it’s a light, feel good read with a little romance thrown in. Life can be tough sometimes, so I always appreciate a book that makes me happy.

Quick fun questions

Coffee or Tea or something else? Tea!
Heels or flats? Heels.
Physical or Ebooks? Physical.
Sweet or Salty? Sweet.
Harry Potter or Twilight? Twilight.
Dogs or Cats? Dogs.

Mandy - Where is the best place to find you?
Kristy - My author site is kristywoodsonharvey.com and my design blog is mydesignchic.com. I’m on Twitter and Instagram at @kristywharvey and on Facebook as Kristy Woodson Harvey. I have an author page, but feel free to friend me too! I LOVE connecting with readers. It is one of the most fun parts of this incredible job!
(website/social media)

Mandy - Anything you want to say to your readers?
Kristy - Just a big, huge, loud, bellowing thank you from the bottom of my heart. I can’t write without readers, and you have overwhelmed me with your love and your passion for DEAR CAROLINA. I can’t wait to hear what you think about LIES AND OTHER ACTS OF LOVE!

Be sure to check out both of her books

Dear Carolina

One baby girl.
Two strong Southern women.
And the most difficult decision they’ll ever make.

Frances “Khaki” Mason has it all: a thriving interior design career, a loving husband and son, homes in North Carolina and Manhattan—everything except the second child she has always wanted. Jodi, her husband’s nineteen-year-old cousin, is fresh out of rehab, pregnant, and alone. Although the two women couldn’t seem more different, they forge a lifelong connection as Khaki reaches out to Jodi, encouraging her to have her baby. But as Jodi struggles to be the mother she knows her daughter deserves, she will ask Khaki the ultimate favor…

Written to baby Carolina, by both her birth mother and her adoptive one, this is a story that proves that life circumstances shape us but don’t define us—and that families aren’t born, they’re made…

Author Interview with Kimberly Castillo

Today I'm thrilled to share with you an interview with a very talented author Kimberly Castillo the author of her debut novel The Convenience of Lies. She was very kind to answer all my crazy questions. I hope you enjoy reading her answers as much as I have and be sure to check out my review of her book (here)

Mandy ~ Where did you get the inspiration for “The Convenience of lies”?
Kimberly ~ The first novel I ever read was Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder, and it inspired me to someday write a book based on my own life. And so, I started keeping a diary with the hopes that someday I would stumble upon a story worth telling. Then, one summer while I was in high school I experienced a lot of drama which I thought could make a good story.

Mandy ~ Do you see yourself in any of your characters?
Kimberly ~ No comment….

Mandy ~ Did you always know you wanted to be a writer?
Kimberly ~ I’ve always liked to write and I’ve always eentertained the idea of writing my own book. However, I never considered pursuing writing as a career.

Mandy ~ What does your writing area look like? (Pictures work for this one too)
Kimberly ~ I have a desk in my living room where I do most of my writing on my laptop. My husband and I keep our desks in the living room so that I can work late while he’s sleeping and not bother him, and so that he can wake up early while I’m sleeping to work at his desk without bothering me.

Mandy ~ What are five items you never leave home without?
Kimberly ~ Besides my cell phone, wallet, and keys, I never leave my house without nail clippers, chap-stick, sunglasses, and usually a sweater.

Mandy ~ Do you prefer ebooks or print?
Kimberly ~ Print. I like reading in the bathtub, and I’m terrified of the idea of dropping a Kindle/Nook into the water and destroying it.

Mandy ~ What are you reading right now?
Kimberly ~ I just finished reading Angels and Demons, and I’m planning on reading Mary Poppins next.

Mandy ~ Do you have a favorite TV show?
Kimberly ~ It’s a close tie between Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother.

Mandy ~ What’s one thing that scares you?
Kimberly ~ I am terrified of the dark. I hate being home alone at night and if the power goes out, I am not a happy camper.

Mandy ~ Who’s your favorite muppet?
Kimberly ~ Grover. I still have my stuffed Grover that I had and loved as a little kid.

Mandy ~ Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published?
Kimberly ~ I had a book signing at the Simi Valley Public Library. Over 100 people showed up and so I had a night where I felt like a minor celebrity. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpGiHqkRFc0

About the author
Kimberly Castillo wrote the first version of The Convenience of Lies when she was a teenager. After studying the process of storytelling at California State University Northridge, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in film production, she revisited this project to complete the story. The Convenience of Lies is her debut novel.

Kimberly is currently studying to be a doctor of optometry at Western University of Health Sciences and lives in Southern California with her husband and three cats.

Author Interview - Nikki Rae

Today I'm thrilled to share with you all an interview with one of my favorite authors. The very talented Nikki Rae the author of the Sunshine Series. She was super kind answering all my prying questions. I hope you enjoy her answers as much as I do. I just had to share the covers for the series aren't they stunning!

Mandy ~ Where did you get the inspiration for “The Sunshine Series”?
Nikki ~ When I was 14 or 15, I went on vacation to Aruba with my family. I got sun poisoning the first day we were there, and I was stuck in the hotel for the rest of the trip. I started wondering what it would be like for someone if something like that happened to them whenever they went out in the sun, so I started writing Sunshine.
Mandy ~ Do you see yourself in any of your characters?
Nikki ~ I think I see myself in all of the characters. There’s no way I can write truthfully without letting little parts of myself slipping into the people I write about.
Mandy ~ Did you always know you wanted to be a writer?
Nikki ~ I didn’t always know I wanted to write. I knew that I liked telling stories, and I liked writing them down, but it took me a really long time to figure out that I could do it as a career or that anyone would ever consider me an author.

Mandy ~ What does your writing area look like? (Pictures work for this one too)
Nikki ~ My writing area is a bg brown desk that has a lot of christmas lights, halloween decorations, art, and candles.

Mandy ~ What are five items you never leave home without?Nikki ~ My black notebook, pens, my kindle, my flashdrive, and some form of tea.
Mandy ~ Do you prefer ebooks or print?
Nikki ~ I like all forms of books. I Iove the feel and smell of physical books, but I love the accessibility and how cheap ebooks can be. I don’t think it matters how or what you read, as long as you’re reading.
Mandy ~ What are you reading right now?
Nikki ~ I’m reading MASKED by Janelle Stalder and I LOVE it!
Mandy ~ Do you have a favorite TV show?
Nikki ~ I don’t really watch TV, but lately I’ve been watching Rick and Morty, but I also like Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, and I’m re-watching all of Buffy right now as well.
Mandy ~ What’s one thing that scares you?
Nikki ~ You mean besides spiders?
okay, besides spiders, not getting to finish all of the things I want to do.
Mandy ~ Who’s your favorite muppet?
Nikki ~ Beaker! Meep meep!
Mandy ~ Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published?
Nikki ~ Anytime someone tells me how my book affected them. It can be in a good or bad way. People have told me how Sunshine has comforted them, and some have told me how it disturbed them. I think a good book should do both.
Mandy ~ Goals for the future projects books (New series)?
Nikki ~ I’m working on a spin off novel that involves a few characters from The Sunshine Series, but you won’t have to read The Sunshine Series to understand it. It’s going to be a horror/suspense stand alone, and I’m really loving it so far. But I think the next series I have planned will be about a girl who is in love with a box...and what comes out of it.
Mandy ~ Anything you want to say to your readers?
Nikki ~ Thank you. I love you all so much!

Blog Tour: Interview Terra Harmony

Today I'm thrilled to share with you the an interview I was lucky enough to snag with the very talented Terra Harmony. She took the time to answer my many questions which I'm known for. Her answers are original and really great so I hope you enjoy getting to know a little more and what makes her tick.

Mandy - Where did you get the inspiration for The Rising?
Terra - Mermaids have been on my mind for a long time, well before I began finishing up my last series. With the 'eco' themes my novels carry, how perfect would it be to concentrate on the oceans? I began reading as many mermaid books as I could get my hands on, and I was left feeling wholly unsatisfied. I took it as a personal challenge to do better, and hopefully readers will let me know if I did! I recently talked more in depth about inspiration here (URL: WILL SEND YOU THE LINK BEFORE YOUR POST IS DUE) – be sure to check it out!

Mandy - Are you happy with the way the cover turned out?
Terra - Very happy, and believe me, it went through several revisions. I had to take into account 'branding' for future books of the trilogy, the young adult genre, and the fact that a cover itself will attract many of the buyers. I ended up using another self-published author, Keary Taylor, to do the cover. She has done all of my covers thus far and she is amazing! I wrote a whole long blog post about the my cover's story here (URL: http://harmonylit.wordpress.com/2013/09/06/my-covers-story/).

Mandy - Do you see yourself in any of the characters?
Terra - Not really – in fact in this book I tried not to put any of myself in the main character. I'm not sure why I was so against it this time around. Maybe because the main character in the last series had almost too much of me in her. I tried to focus on the qualities of my younger sister – her rebellious nature that often conflicts with the desire to stay within her comfort zone.

Mandy - Did you always know you wanted to be a writer?
Terra - Nope – and I still don't know if that is what I want to do. I think for me it is mainly about trying new things. But so far, I haven't grown tired of the exciting world of writing, so I think I'll stick with it!

Mandy - Do you prefer eBooks or physical books?
Terra - I prefer whatever fits in my purse – or better yet, my pocket. For now I read most of my books on my phone, just because that sucker is always with me.

Mandy - What is your preferred atmosphere when you write?

Terra - Lately, I've been hammering away at the computer between 5 and 7:30 am every morning before the kids get up. I have three kids, a full-time job outside of writing, and my husband is gone often for work so the rest of my day fills up pretty quick. I key up some classical music on Pandora and enjoy the peace that won't come again until the next morning.

Mandy - If you had a magic power what would it be?
Terra - The answer to that question depends on my mood! For right now, I'd say 'conjuring'. I really want to 'magic' a hot cup of coffee in my hands.

Mandy - Do you have a favorite beverage?
Terra - Coffee (speaking of magic), until it is time to switch to wine!

Mandy - Do you have a guilty pleasure?
Terra - Vampires – totally!

Mandy - What are 5 things you never leave home without?
Terra - Kid 1, Kid 2, Kid 3, keys and purse. You know – the essentials.

Mandy - Do you have a favorite quote?
Terra - Write drunk and edit sober. Though in reality it should say 'write drunk and edit hung-over', which really doesn't work.

Mandy - Is there anything you want to tell your readers?
Terra - If you check out my book, please, please, please let me know what you think by leaving a review or sending me an email directly. Also – keep our oceans healthy!

Mandy - Where can we STALK you?
Terra - Soooooo many places to stalk me:

E-mail: terra.harmony11@gmail.com
Author Bio:

Terra is author of the eco-fantasy novels in the Akasha Series, 'Water', 'Air', 'Fire' and 'Earth', as well as the Painted Maidens Trilogy. Terra was born and raised in Colorado but has since lived in California, Texas, Utah, North Carolina, and Virginia. Terra has served a 5½ year enlistment in the Marine Corp, has earned her bachelor's and master's degree and presently runs the language services division of a small business.
Terra currently lives in a suburb of Washington, DC with her husband of 14 years and three children.

Thank you so much Terra for being here today it's been a absolute pleasure and the highlight of my day!

Blog tour - Interview - Laney McMann

Today I'm thrilled to share an interview with the very talented Laney McMann. The author of the exciting new novel Tied. I was lucky enough to have her answer a few of my favorite questions. I hope you enjoy reading her answers as much as I did.

Mandy - Where did you come up with the idea for Tied?
Laney - The idea just hit me one day, and the next thing I knew, I was 30,000 words into the story.
Mandy - Do you see yourself in any of your characters?
Laney - I see myself in all of my characters. I think it's hard to separate yourself completely from characters you're creating in your imagination. And that's especially true when writing in first person. So, I see myself in Layla in a lot of ways. I also see her
Mandy - Did you always know you wanted to be a writer?
Laney  - I've always written for myself, but it was never aim to write professionally until a few years ago.
Mandy - Where do you prefer to do your writing? What type of computer or do you write by hand or typewriter?
Laney - I write all over. Outside, at my desk, on the couch. I get bored and move around a lot. I write on a Mac, take tons of hand written notes, and notes on my iphone.
Mandy - Do you prefer e-books, paperbacks or hardbacks?
Laney - Hardback is my favorite. They last and last, and I love the way they smell. But I also have gotten very used to downloading any book I want onto my kindle or nook in a few seconds. So, both formats have advantages.
Mandy - What are five items you never leave home without?
Laney - My iphone, my keys, my laptop, ice water or hot tea, and my purse
Mandy - Do you have a guilty pleasure?
Laney - Coke. As in coca cola. So bad for me, but it's my one true vice.
Mandy - If you could have paranormal abilities what would you choose?
Laney - Hm ... the power to hear people's thoughts would be cool. Time travel.
Mandy - Are you still working on the next book in the Fire Born Series?
Laney  - I am. I'm about 75% finished with TORN as I'm writing this in July.
Mandy - Are you excited for the release of Tied?
Laney - I'm split. Part of me is excited and part of me is scared to death. This is a first for me, so there's always some trepidation that goes along with a debut.
Mandy - Anything you want to say to your readers?
Laney - I hope you fall in love with the story the way I have. ;)

BIO:

With a passion for the supernatural and all things magical, Laney developed a voracious appetite for reading fantasy at a young age. A vivid imagination helped set the stage for creating her own worlds and placed her onto the writing path.

By the time she reached her teens, she'd accumulated notebooks full of poems, which led to short stories and finally novels. Young adult dark fantasy, paranormal romance, and mythology are among her favorite genres.

A former classical dancer and chef, she grew up in sultry Florida where she still resides with her family.

Blitz + Author Interview - Summer Love

Title - Summer Love
Author - Marysue G. Hobika
Series: Senior Year #1
Publication date: June 2013
Genre: New Adult Contemporary

Synopsis:
Carly and her best friend Becca are ready to drop a nuclear bomb on summer. It’s the last one before reality sets in and they’re off on their own. Carly is ready to break the mold and stop being known as a goody-two-shoes. In order to get the ball rolling, she agrees to a double date with Gavin – her good-looking, yet moody, lab partner.

Gavin doesn’t have summer plans except to work at his two jobs and hang out in his room drawing. He likes to keep to himself, but lets his brother Nate talk him into going on a double date. Carly isn’t like the rest of the girls at school that drive him crazy. She doesn’t ask a lot of questions and seems to know when to give him the space he craves. Gavin always thought that she was beautiful, but he believes that relationships and love are a lost cause.

Will their date prove that summer love is right around the corner or will it be a dead end?

This book is intended for audiences 17+

An awesome interview with the author to share with all of you today.

What is your latest news?
“Summer Love” was published July 8, 2013. It’s the first book in the series “Senior Year.” A lot of hard work went into it and I am truly excited about its release. I believe it is my best work so far. I have already begun writing book two.

What inspired you to write this book?
I have always wanted to write a series. The summer before senior year seemed like the perfect beginning point. Who doesn’t love summer and the freedom it brings?

How did you come up with the title?
The word summer had to be in the title. I toyed around with a few possibilities and took some polls—“Summer Love” was the clear winner.
All of the titles in the series will center around a season. The next book is, “Falling Into You.”

Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
Yes and No. I chose a four-year-old girl that I know and imagined what she’ll be like when she’s seventeen years old and then plopped her in the middle of a situation. Also I incorporated pieces of my own daughter. She loves to sing and I could easily imagine her joining a band someday or working toward a music degree. In the end, the characters are of my own creation and imagination.

If Hollywood made your book into a movie who would you cast as the leads?
This is one of my favorite questions—to think people would love my book enough to want to turn it into a movie.

I would choose Vanessa Hudgens to play Carly. She is beautiful and perfect for the role. My ideal Gavin would be Landon Liboiron. He is super cute and has brilliant blue eyes that look like the water in the Bahamas (just like Gavin’s eyes are described in “Summer Love”.)

Coffee or tea?
Coffee all the way. Once upon a time, I was an exchange student in Spain where I fell in love with all things Spanish, including coffee. I loved meeting friends “para tomar un cafĂ©.”
If you could wear your pajamas all day, would you? Why or why not?
Of course, I would. And many times I do, especially when I’m writing.

What’s your favorite dessert?
Ice cream. I would eat it every day if I could. During the summer I love visiting all the different local ice cream stands and sampling all the delicious flavors.

Author Interview Becoming Bryn

Today I'm thrilled to share a interview with the brilliant and very talented Angela Carling. The author of her newest book Becoming Bryn which I was lucky enough to snag a copy of. My Review can be found (Here) Be sure to check it out.

Mandy - Where did you come up with the idea for Becoming Bryn?

Angela - I was thinking about some twins in my extended family and how one is more naturally outgoing than the other. That got me thinking about how the shy twin must feel in her sister’s “shadow”.  Thus, Becoming Bryn was born. It’s crazy, ideas can come from anywhere.

Mandy - Do you see yourself in any of your characters?
Angela - Not specifically in the characters, but more in the sibling situation. My older sister is GORGEOUS and every time I brought a boyfriend home, she seemed to saunter out in a bikini.  Yeah, I was flat as a board, loved for my shining personalityJ Soo..I guess what I am saying Jesse’s feelings of inadequacy are not a total mystery to me!

Mandy - Did you always know you wanted to be a writer?
Angela - Yep, it was a little girl dream, that with a ton of hard work actually came true. My life is Disneyland… what can I say.

Mandy - Where do you prefer to do your writing? What type of computer or do you write by hand or typewriter?
Angela - I LOVE MY COMPUTER. I’D MARRY IT IF I WEREN’T ALREADY HAPPILY MARRIED TO MY AMAZING HUSBAND. Okay, I’m kidding about the marry part, but I do live on my blinged out computer for all my writing.

Mandy - Do you prefer e-books, paperbacks or hardbacks?
Angela - I prefer any book I can get my hands in any form. I do love the smell of new bookstores though. I hope that doesn’t go away!

Mandy - What are five items you never leave home without?
Angela - Some kind of music, sunglasses (it’s Arizona), my adorable purple purse, flip flops, and my writing computer.

Mandy -Do you have a guilty pleasure?

Angela - I have a soft spot for kitties and love spending time with them, especially my munchkin named Frodo BagginsJ. My family even volunteers to care for the kitties at the animal shelter once a week.

Mandy - If you had to pick just one who is your favorite muppet?
Angela - Ms. Piggy. She is so raw and I just get that personality!

Mandy - Any future writing plans?
Angela - Yes, ma’ m! I’m writing a trilogy that takes place about thirty years in the future, yet in many ways is nostalgic of the past. Everyone lives on homes that are attached to track and no one lives in one place longer than two months before they’re relocated.  I also have a standalone called the New York Experiment that I want to write. Both projects are so fun. I can’t wait to share them with you!

Mandy -Anything you want to say to your readers?
Angela - I really appreciate my readers so I guess I want to say thank you.  I love you guys and will always try to write amazing books for you!

Blog Tour: Author Interview Teri Harman!

Today i'm super excited to share with all you wonderful readers a interview with the author of an exciting new YA Novel Teri Harman. Her new novel Blood Moon comes out today. Be sure to check out my (review) of Blood Moon. I hope you enjoy reading through her answers to my questions as much as I have.

Mandy ~Where did you come up with the idea for Blood Moon?
Teri ~Blood Moon was actually inspired by an annual Halloween witches party I do for the women in our families. The second year of the party I found a killer location – a 100 year old school house. I wanted the party to be as epic as the location, so I read a lot about witches, Wicca and natural magic to gather ideas for games, activities, dĂ©cor, food, etc. I was fascinated by it all and after the party my husband suggested I take the research and my witch obsession and write a book.

Mandy ~Have you always been drawn to things that go bump in the night?
Teri ~Yes, for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I devoured books like “The Black Cauldron,” and “Ghost Stories to Tell in the Dark,” the “Goosebumps” series and R.L. Stine books. Certainly not quality literature, but I couldn't get enough of the twisted and bizarre. And that hunger for the haunting has never stopped. I read and loved the “Hannibal” books. My favorite TV shows have included “Buffy,” “The X-Files,” “Supernatural,” and “The Walking Dead.” If it’s dark and magical, I’m in.

Mandy ~Do you see yourself in Willa?

Teri ~I think so, as most authors see themselves in their characters in one way or another. Willa’s ability to see the past, present and future in her dreams is actually based on my own vivid dreaming experiences. And several of her dreams in BLOOD MOON are based on my own. She is a historian and I adore the mystery of history. And she lives in a quaint small town, which is a fantasy of mine.

Mandy ~Are you currently working on Black Moon?
Teri ~Yes, and I’m almost finished. BLACK MOON has taken some interesting and exciting turns and I hope readers love it as much as I do. If they don’t hate me for the ending (insert maniacal laugh).

Mandy ~Do you see Blood Moon as a movie one day?
Teri ~Of course! How cool would that be? I think every author imagines her story brought to life on the big screen. I’d also be thrilled to death if it became a TV series. I prefer TV series to movies because there’s so much more freedom to develop and engage with the characters and the story. So fingers crossed.

Mandy ~Do you have a favorite monster?
Teri ~Hmmm….that’s a tough one. I can think of all kinds of scary monsters and demons from “Buffy” and “Supernatural.” I think the one that lingers in my mind the most is from the first season of “Supernatural.” It’s a scarecrow monster that holds a small town hostage and demands a sacrifice every year. So creepy!

Mandy ~Do you like scary movies?
Teri ~Certainly! Although, I’m pretty picky about what I think qualifies as a good scary movie. I prefer older ones with more of a psychological scary than blood and guts, such as “Wait Until Dark” with Audrey Hepburn. Another one I love, that not a lot of people know about, is a cult classic from the 60’s called “Carnival of Souls.” It’s a low-budget flick, but it was filmed at the ruins of Saltair, on the Great Salt Lake here in Utah, and I’m fascinated by that place. It’s not super scary, but it has a few golden moments.
