Book Review: When

Title - When
Author - Victoria Laurie
Genre - YA Paranormal Mystery
Published - January 13th 2015
Publisher - Disney-Hyperion
Format - Kindle

Synopsis
Maddie Fynn is a shy high school junior, cursed with an eerie intuitive ability: she sees a series of unique digits hovering above the foreheads of each person she encounters. Her earliest memories are marked by these numbers, but it takes her father’s premature death for Maddie and her family to realize that these mysterious digits are actually death dates, and just like birthdays, everyone has one.

Forced by her alcoholic mother to use her ability to make extra money, Maddie identifies the quickly approaching death date of one client's young son, but because her ability only allows her to see the when and not thehow, she’s unable to offer any more insight. When the boy goes missing on that exact date, law enforcement turns to Maddie.

Soon, Maddie is entangled in a homicide investigation, and more young people disappear and are later found murdered. A suspect for the investigation, a target for the murderer, and attracting the attentions of a mysterious young admirer who may be connected to it all, Maddie's whole existence is about to be turned upside down. Can she right things before it's too late?

Review
Maddie has a unique ability she can look at anyone in person or from a picture and see the day they will die in the form of a number on their forehead. As a child no one knew what the numbers meant but after her father’s death matched the numbers everyone knew she could see people’s deathdate. Her mother took the loss of her husband hard falling into alcohol so the only way Maddie could pay the bills was seeing clients and revealing to them the day they would die. When Mrs. Tibbolt show’s up for a consultation she’s asking about her daughter who has leukemia everything changes because it’s not the daughter but her son who has the deathdate just next week.

Trying to help the only way she knew how Maggie tells Mrs. Tibbolt the truth who doesn’t accept the truth and when Maggie calls to try and talk some sense into her Mrs. Tribbolt threatens the cops. It’s only after Mrs. Tibbolts son is found murdered that the cops start looking at Maddie as the possible murder and when they try to help a cheerleader who also ends up dead soon she and her best friend Stubs look just like the killers. Will Maddie be able to prove they are innocent or will they both end up in prison for murder’s they didn’t commit? Who is the real killer and how does he know Maddie?

I liked Maddie she’s an alright character I just didn’t connect with her she’s your shy quiet smart girl next door type who keeps to herself. Both her and her best friend are good kids with good hearts even putting themselves in the line of fire to save two people they didn’t know. We also have a good deal of seeing the FBI agents who work the case, Maddie’s uncle and mom and even a boy she has a crush on but none of them are important character to the story. The main focus is Maddie and she had so much potential as a character she just didn’t live up to it.

I’ve had this one on my TBR for a while after all I love the publisher so I knew it would be a good one. My book club group actually picked this one for our February read so a bunch of us had the chance to read it. I think the author had a great concept but I felt that the story was just weak, and maybe that’s because I just expected too much. I wanted more mystery and romance I think the little hinting of romance throughout the story wasn’t bad but I wanted to see Maddie get the guy. I also never saw it coming who the killer was we have several potential and I was shocked when I read who it was. Overall I liked When it’s an interesting idea I just didn’t love the way it played out. I actually finished When the day of book club. The author’s writing style was enjoyable the story just flowed along from page to page. This is my first book by the author but I’m curious to check out her other series. Would I read it again? No but I would recommend it to others because I think the concept was great just not my kind of book.

Synopsis
A Love and War stand Alone

These DO NOT NEED to be read in any order
I crashed and opened my eyes . . . there you were, fierce and protective, and I knew . . . I just knew it was you all along.
Ex-Marine Trent Reed has been shot at, in a coma, and placed in war zones, but when his best friend calls in a favor, he is faced with the most dangerous situation yet—to be the best man. Trent’s turbulent past with races other than his own taints his view on the interracial marriage, and he’s none too happy to deal with the ill-tempered maid of honor. To accept the position means understanding that his friend is soon to be out of his life—for good.
Tough-girl Teal Lofton has struggled all of her adult life, from her weight to the color of her skin holding her back in work and love. When she agrees to be the maid of honor in her friend’s wedding, a hormonal bride and a jerk of a best man who she is strangely, yet wildly, attracted to, amplify those struggles.
As tensions and tempers rise, Trent disappears with the wedding rings and Teal braves a snowstorm to bring them back, determined to fix yet another problem. But a tragic accident brings together the unlikely pair, forcing them to face the prejudices of their pasts. In doing so, Trent and Teal embark on an inevitable course of self-discovery and passion like they’ve never experienced before—until a secret from Trent’s past threatens to destroy it all.

Excerpt
The taste of metal filled Trent’s mouth, along with the sound of bees swarming in his head. Confusion took over, before the muffled sounds of a man speaking pulled Trent from his darkened haze. He forced himself to crack open his eyes and a sharp pain shot through his head. Heavy snow fell around him, yet not his face. Opening his eyes wider he could see the blurred face of a man holding something over Trent’s head. He realized the covering was meant to protect him from the snow. Trent moved gingerly, but his arms felt weighted and his body barely responded to his commands. The voice came again, a bit clearer than before.
Trent had momentarily forgotten where he was and what was going on. His mind raced with visions of war and his body ached. He worried about the effects of PTSD in situations like this. Luckily, he didn’t have to think about that too long. Memory of what actually happened popped into his consciousness and his eyes shot open with worry.
“There you are.” An unfamiliar voice said calmly. Trent’s eyes took a moment to focus. The face of his neighbor came into view. “Don’t move just yet. You might have broken something.” The man looked him over as if he could tell just by looking.
Trent didn’t feel any pain, just confusion. “W—where’s the woman?” Trent asked, ignoring the man’s futile attempts to get him to stay down. He turned over and propped himself up on his bruised elbow. Looking around, he searched for a flash of gold dress and dark skin. His head ached and whatever wounds he’d sustained finally started to make their presence known. He shook his head, but it cleared nothing and only left him a bit dizzy.
The man pointed over past the driveway. “Your woman is over there. My wife and I didn’t want to move her. You were out for about five minutes.” Trent listened as he struggled to stand. He glanced over, only seeing a bright red blur in the darkness. “I still think you should stay down until a rescue squad gets here.”
Trent shook his head, meaning to tell the man no, but this time, he effectively shook off some of the fog. He stood on unsteady feet and glanced over to the only road leading to their cabins. “Look over there.” He pointed. “How are they even going to get in here if they make it here at all?” He stumbled over to the woman in a bright red coat. As he got closer, he saw Teal on the ground covered up, but still unconscious. The woman held a phone to her ear, but was silent as if she were on hold.
As each second passed, the fog in Trent’s head lessened and he was more aware of how serious their situation was becoming the longer Teal didn’t wake up. Thoughts swarmed his head, spurning him into action. He needed to get her inside, but moving her would be tricky.
Behind him, the man walked over and spoke to his wife. “What’d they say?”
The woman looked up with a sullen look on her face. “Roads are closed, the snow is too heavy.” She looked worriedly at Trent as the harsh cold wind whipped her hair into her face. “They can’t get anyone out to us yet.”
Regardless, Trent understood that in Teal’s situation, she couldn’t stay lying in the snow. He turned to the man. “Help me get her inside and on the bed. I’ll start a fire and warm her up.” He glanced around, searching for something to move her with. His body shook and sharp pains and aches assaulted him whenever he moved.
The woman looked warily at Trent. “Are you sure we should move her?” She glanced at her husband with a frown. Trent didn’t want to move her and possibly cause more injury, but as it seemed, rescue was most likely not coming anytime soon and Teal would freeze to death out here. The thought made his chest ache. He’d served in the military and there was no such thing as an ex-soldier. The things you learned lasted a lifetime and he been in worse predicaments than this. There was no way he’d let her die out here alone in the damned cold. The man seemed to agree with Trent’s unspoken thoughts and moved to Teal’s feet.
Still she shook her head, undeterred. “Honey, I’m not sure about this. I think moving her could mess with any possible injury. I mean, what if she has a broken spine or something?” The woman glanced back down at Teal and took her hand in hers.
Trent understood her fear, as it was his as well. But he had a plan. “Sir,” he called to the man.
“Lee. Call me Lee.”
Trent nodded. “I can move her, but I need a flat sturdy surface, like a door or table, I only have one door in my cabin and I can’t remove the entrance . . .”
“Lee,” the woman called to her husband and threw keys to him. “Go to the cabin and break down the bathroom door and bring it out.”
Trent raised a brow at the force in her tone. Thankfully, Lee didn’t think twice, and he took off in a mad dash toward the cabin. Trent used this time to stagger inside his own cabin, grabbing all the sheets off the bed and heading back to Teal. He placed them around her as best he could.
Logan was going to flat out kill Trent when this was over. He felt her pulse and it beat strong in her chest. Her breathing was also steady, and there were no head injuries other than the gash on her forehead. It wouldn’t even need stitches. If they were lucky, she’d just been knocked out and would wake up fine.

The Drakes are rather different to your usual neighbors. They are vampires and some of the members of the family date back to the twelfth century. Her best friend Lucy is human, and when Solange is kidnapped, Lucy and Solange's brother, Nicholas, set out to save her. Meanwhile, Solange finds an unlikely ally in Kieran, a vampire slayer on the hunt for his father's killer.

Teaser
I stopped abruptly and lifted my chin, trying to pretend my shoulder blades weren’t pressing into the log wall and I had nowhere to go.
“What?”
He was close enough that his legs practically brushed mine.
He was close enough, in point of fact, to kiss.
I was instantly horrified the thought had even crossed my mind.

Review
The Drakes are an old family of vampires so no tea parties or picnic’s on the agenda with them unless you’re Solange. The last remaining child who hasn’t turned into a vampire yet but with her fast approaching sweet sixteenth that’s about to change. Lucy is Solange’s best friend who also happens to be human but she knows all about the Drakes having grown up with them. As Solange’s upcoming change starts looming the prophecy about her existence comes into play. Attacked by vampires wanting to love on Solange and hunters wanting revenge when Lucy sneaks Solange out to attempt a night at normal things start to change.

Solange receives requests for meetings from family that they don’t see till after the change even the queen has put in a request for a visit neither she can ignore. While her meeting with family is odd it does provide her with a way to survive the change that’s about to start however she may just have to use her advantage to save someone else. As if Solange doesn’t have enough to worry about with the change she ends up kidnapped and Lucy sets out to find her because that’s what you do for your best friend. Will Lucy be able to get to Solange before it’s too late? What about Kieran the vampire hunter who tried to get her before?

We have to main character it bounces between the two Solange our future vampire and Lucy her human best friend both of them I enjoyed. I liked the way they pair off it’s almost as if they complement each other personality wise which I liked right away. However Lucy was my favorite maybe it’s because she has a crush on Nicholas and she made me smile not as serious as Solange is. I wasn’t sure about Kieran but as the book progressed he grew on me and I see a lot of potential for him in the next book.

I’ve had this one on my kindle for far too long with every intention of reading it just never got around to it. Last week a fellow blogger buddy of mine Stormi @ Books, Movies, Review! Oh my!  told me how much she loved the Drakes so I decided I needed to check it out and I’m glad I did.  What I expected was your typical teenage vampire novel what I was a pleasant surprise the vampires are unique they aren’t your sparkly vampires either. The concept for the Drakes is captivating it’s an interesting unique spin on vampires that I very much enjoyed. The author has one of those writing styles that just flows it’s a well written story even though we have two points of view, it just flows together perfectly. The characters are great I enjoyed both of the MC and was able to connect with each of them in a different way. Hearts at Stake is a fast paced novel that mixes mystery in with a paranormal romance story that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. I found that I had a hard time putting the book down and now all I can think about is what’s going to happen next for Lucy and Nicholas. It’s been a while since I enjoyed a vampire romance like I did this one and already I have the second book on my kindle waiting. Looking forward to exploring more of the girls world and seeing how it will play out.

Book Trailer (Here)

Excerpt
Volleyball had been replaced by badminton while I was in the hospital. Mr. Mooney let me get away with sitting out class the first two days, but by the third he decided to diagnose me as fit for participation.
“Sky, ready to jump back in?”
I paused on my way to the bleachers. “I’m not dressed.”
Besides, everyone was already paired up.
“Fane!” Mr. Mooney called. “Get out here. You can be Aurora’s partner.”
I tried not to flinch or show signs of distress. My last memory of Fane involved his tongue tracing his upper lip in lewd gesture.
Fane stood up and gave Mr. Mooney a glare so dark it sent a shiver down my spine. It was the first real sensation I’d experienced since the accident. When his eyes moved to me I momentarily forgot to breathe.
Fane held my gaze a moment longer then slipped out of his leather jacket. I watched, transfixed. This was history in the making. Fane Donado taking off his coat.
All of his imperfections breezed out the door as soon as I got my first look at the six-pack straining against his cotton tee. My eyes must have been playing tricks on me. For a guy with such a slender build, Fane was surprisingly muscled.
Fane took deliberate steps down the aisle of the bench, straight to the edge. He jumped from the bleachers, causing them to rock in his wake.
I swore I felt a thud inside the pit of my stomach when he landed.
Mr. Mooney nodded at Fane. “You two are playing Clayton and Tyler.”
Fane walked past me and took two rackets off the floor. He handed me one. I took it from his outstretched hand then followed several steps behind.
Part of me was relieved he didn’t say anything. All I could think about was the obscene gesture he’d made right before my world turned up-side-down. I hardly noticed his hair. I was too distracted by his lips. And now his abs. Luckily, I wouldn’t have to look at either while we played side by side.
At the far court, Clayton and Tyler bounced birdies up and down on the strings of their rackets.
Clayton nudged Tyler as we approached. “Oh great. Goth boy and zombie girl. This should be fun.”
I took my place beside Fane. He held his racket loose and lazy. I barely held mine at all. Clayton pelted the birdie at me. I tried to shield my face and ended up dropping my racket.
“Oh, come on!” Clayton shouted.
I picked up the birdie and threw it over the net.
Clayton served the birdie to Fane, who smacked it over the net with the flick of a wrist. Tyler launched the birdie at me. It hit me on the shoulder, but I swung anyway as it bounced to the floor.
“Hello? Earth to Aurora,” Tyler called across the net.
“I think she’s still in a coma,” Clayton said.
“That’s game,” Tyler said. “Your serve.”
I picked up the birdie and handed it to Fane. It’s a good thing it wasn’t a real bird. Fane crushed it in his hand. Only for a moment. Only I saw. He relaxed and looked across the net. I felt that odd shiver return.
Fane smacked the birdie as though it were a fly. He walloped it right between Tyler and Clayton so fast neither boy had time to react. When they did manage a return hit, Fane gracefully flicked away any stray birds that came at me. I watched in fascination, fully engaged for the first time since the accident.
The boys tried to hit the birdie back. Fane had them racing across every corner of their court. By the end of the period they were out of breath. They took off without a backwards glance when Mr. Mooney blew his whistle signaling the end of gym.
As I walked past Fane I felt a twitch. Not my own. I felt the twitch of his hand wanting to stop me.
“Hey, you. Are you okay?”
If I had any emotion left I’d laugh. He didn’t even know my name—that or it wasn’t worth saying.
He studied me carefully. “I’ve seen that look before.”
Now I was curious.
Valerie jumped down from the bleachers. “Fane!”
He didn’t pay attention to her. I held my breath waiting for him to tell me what he saw.
Valerie sashayed her way over to Fane, red hair blazing down her shoulders. She held out his jacket. “I’m ready to blow this joint. Let’s get a bite.”
Her last words grabbed his attention, and he forgot me completely. Valerie looped her arm around Fane’s and they walked toward the double doors. I was right behind them, silent as a ghost. When I reached the hall entrance leading to the locker rooms I stopped. I saw his head start to turn. I knew he was going to look back, but by the time he did I’d be gone.

Review
I received Aurora Sky as part of the tour hosted by Xpresso Book Tours in return for an honest review. Aurora was a normal girl not popular but with college plans far away from the Alaska snow. Suddenly a fatal car wreaks changes her life sending her into a world she didn't know existed. Aurora has rare blood which makes her a perfect choice when it comes to hunting vampires. With the extra stuff the military is giving her she’s turned into a slaying machine. However she has developed a little bit of a bad girl attitude with everything she’s dealing with.

Thankfully she’s not on her own she’s got a mentor of sorts Dante who has a golden retriever named Teddy. Dante is also a more seasoned hunter so Aurora isn’t expecting to have to do it all her own. Her first time out with Dante she’s left alone with two vampires while Dante heads out to keep Janie’s cover still secret. Aurora takes out Ivo when he bites her and pretends to stumble out so the other vampire will drink her blood giving her a chance to get him also.

Aurora has ditched her old friends for a new group of girls who are into the vampire scene. She’s nicknamed them the Mouseketeers because they are all short. The girls aren't her only friends she’s also drawn the attention of Fane who happens to be dating her arch enemy. Soon Aurora has a new boyfriend but as she learns his secret will she accept his? Will he accept her secret? As if that’s not enough they are being hunted by a crazy vampire seeking revenge and to erase all the hunters.

Aurora Sky for me was a quick read. I zipped though it in one sitting. I've always had a soft spot for vampire hunters over the years. I really enjoy the unique twists that come with the vampires. I like that the hunters have blood that helps them slay the vampires. The concept is exciting and refreshing creating a story that captures your attention and doesn't let go till the end. Aurora does a lot of growing up throughout the book, learning who she is now that her life has changed. I felt like I really connected with Aurora she's one of those characters you can't help connecting with as she progresses though the book however she's got a few moments when I want to beat her with my kindle. Aurora has a love interest as well as a potential one well at least I think Dante could of been one. At first I wasn't sure how I felt about Fane but by the end I was totally head over heals for the pair. I was very happy to see Noel and Aurora build a strong friendship because she needed someone who cares. Overall Aurora sky is a brilliant start to an exciting new series, which I can't wait to read the next one.
4 out of 5 stars
