Book Review: Forgotten

Title - Forgotten
Author - Catherine Gardiner
Series - In the Shadows
Genre - YA Paranormal
Published June 6th 2012
Format - Kindle Freebie

Synopsis
Sycamore Heights, where everyone keeps a deadly secret.

Katrina Harvey has just enrolled into the senior class of Sycamore Heights High along with her foster sister, Jessica Sinclair. Unfortunately Katrina is no ordinary enrollee as ten months previously she was brutally attacked and has been left with amnesia.

Almost a year after those horrific events took place Katrina is being stalked by someone, or something, who doesn’t want her to remember her past and will do anything to keep it that way.

Moving to a new town is never easy, as Suzanne Harvey is well aware, but focused on finding her older sister, Katrina, fate has led her to Sycamore Heights. Now, as Suzanne gets closer to revealing secrets from the past, someone from the present doesn’t like what she could unearth, even if that means they drive her to the brink of insanity to keep the secrets forgotten.

Teaser
With her music distracting her, Katrina did not hear that someone was following her from Clayton Falls High School Library and across the school's football field. Nor did she hear her stalker raise a baseball bat and take a swing at her skull.
The last though Katrina had was of her sister, Suzanne, before her memory faded behind a veil of darkness.

Covers
Two covers. I prefer the one from Goodreads with the girl looking out with the eyes. The newer cover for Forgotten is the one with the dress that showed up on my kindle. Keep in mind it was my paper white so it didn't do it justice and that could be why I'm partial to the original. Which one do you prefer?

Review
I hate to admit that I picked this one up as a kindle freebie back in 2012 and it’s been sitting on my kindle since then. Katrina is attacked leaving her with no memories of her past and without an identity. Deciding it’s time to figure out her past she agrees to hypnosis therapy which reveals that fragments of her past which she starts to remember. Someone doesn’t want her to remember her past and is sending her notes and items to keep her in the dark. While Katrina doesn’t remember her past it’s going to catch up with her one way or another.

While Katrina may not know her past her sister and friends have been searching for her for a long time. Having found her with her memories missing they are forced to wait but deep down it’s killing her sister Suzanne just watching her sister not know who she is. However Katrina isn’t the only one with someone stalking her. Will the sisters be united? Will the ones hunting them get them? What’s really going on with Marcus?

I liked the characters we have multiple points of view Katrina, Emily and Suzanne. Each girl has a little different of a background with their own tragic story and how they came to be. I like the girls and found that I was able to connect with them more than the guys. I don’t think I can pick my favorite just yet because each one has a quality or personality I liked.

I wasn’t sure about this one the cover is what hooked me in. I think the author has created an interesting paranormal concept that is set in the late 90’s which I loved. I like the way that she mixed the humans in with the vampires and werewolves they worked together instead of fighting each other. The world building wasn’t bad I could have used more but it was still a good amount and the storyline flows along smoothly. All in all it is a really captivating story I just really wish it was long because I enjoyed it very much. I have high hopes for more in the future because I would love to spend more time in Katrina’s world. Overall great first installment.

Book Blitz: Broken Aro

by Jen Wylie
Release Date: 09/04/12
Untold Press
265 pages

Summary from Goodreads:
Open your eyes to darkness. What do you see? Does the darkness frighten you? Now imagine the darkness being the cargo hold of a slave ship. Your city has fallen. Your family is most likely dead. You don't know anyone around you, and some of them aren't even human. Giving up would be so easy to do, but not for Arowyn Mason. Not after being raised in a military family with seven brothers. Every great story should begin with a plan. Aro's was to escape and to survive.

Escape comes, but at a price. As they reach the shore, Aro and the other survivors learn that freedom doesn't mean safety. The slavers want their property back and will do anything to get it. The party uses every ounce of their brute strength, a hearty helping of cunning, and even ancient magics to keep themselves alive. Sickness, danger, and even love surprise them at every turn. Dealing with danger becomes their way of life, but none of them ever considered that nothing can be quite as dangerous as a prophecy. Running turns into another race altogether as her world falls to pieces again and again.

Excerpt
"Do you believe in magic, Aro?"
"What?" His sudden question startled her. "Well, I guess." She paused, thinking. "They say the eastern lands are full of all manner of beings that aren't human. Some are...something more. Like you. Is what you do magic?"
"Sort of. You could say part of me is magic. The Were use it more, changing forms. The Elves have their powers."
She interrupted him warily, "Are you going to do something strange again?"
He was silent for a very long time. "We Fey have a special magic. A magic of the heart and soul. A magic of…binding…of promise and intent. Do you understand?"
"No idea at all," she admitted.
"I want you to know how serious I am about protecting you, and I want you to know it's not just because of your father. I like you, Aro. I want us to be friends."
"I sort of thought we were heading that way already."
"But I can make it binding. Forever. Forever friends. No matter what."
She considered about what he said, who'd he suddenly become to her. He was her brother, her father had believed in him, but still...she hesitated. "Would it hurt?"
"Of course not," he said incredulously. "It's words and a little magic. That's all."
"Sure," she said impulsively. "What are the words?"
Her answer seemed to have surprised him. He took a moment before answering. "In friendship I shall bind my heart and soul to yours. Forever beside you I shall stand. Together or apart always will I be with you. Eternal friends we shall ever be."

My Dusty Bookshelf

My Dusty Bookshelf
I've got an addiction for adding books to my bookshelf but never getting around to them. I'm sure I'm not the only one either. It's just so easy with all the new books to forget about the older ones. I'd like to start reading some of the books I've had for years and just haven't read. I thought this would be a good way to share and rekindle some interest in my dusty books. Plus I love giving books a little extra spotlight when I can.

This weeks book is special it's been ages since I read it and as part of a read along we are reading it this week.

Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs
(Goodreads)

Synopsis
Anna never knew werewolves existed, until the night she survived a violent attack... and became one herself. After three years at the bottom of the pack, she'd learned to keep her head down and never, ever trust dominant males. Then Charles Cornick, the enforcer—and son—of the leader of the North American werewolves, came into her life.

Charles insists that not only is Anna his mate, but she is also a rare and valued Omega wolf. And it is Anna's inner strength and calming presence that will prove invaluable as she and Charles go on the hunt in search of a rogue werewolf—a creature bound in magic so dark that it could threaten all of the pack.

How is your reading going? Anything interesting that's been sitting on your shelf a long time.

Publisher - CreateSpace Independent Publishing

Synopsis
"Even the very first time I saw you, I had the feeling that you wouldn’t be good for me."

Not even Emma’s worst nightmares could have prepared her for the dramatic change that takes place in her life. After the sudden death of her mother, she has no choice but to go and live with her Uncle and his family on the sleepy town of Portree on the Scottish Isle of Skye.
The last thing she expects is to fall in love there. From the very first moment she meets Calum, his mysterious aura captivates her. He casts a spell on her, and even his seeming disinterest does little to change this. His contradictory behaviour only adds to his allure. But before long this fassade begins to crumble, and eventually even he gives in to his feelings.
When he reveals his true identity to her one day, she flees from him. But it’s too late, for she has already fallen head over heels...

A fantastical, mythical book for all fans of Twilight and Co -- without vampires and werewolves, but with many other fascinating creatures that anyone would love to encounter. Immerse yourself in the story of Emma and Calum.

Opening Line
I couldn't remember the last time I had woken up in the middle of the night.

"Let's go for a walk." I said
"Do you feel strong enough for that?" he looked at me skeptically.
"I think so. And if necessary you can always carry me back." I Replied teasingly
"I'd love to."
I blushed and looked away in embarrassment.

Short & Sweet
Scottish Romeo & Juliette with a paranormal twist.

Review
I received Silver Moon Light in return for an honest review from the author. Emma has always been warned away from the water and is surprised when her mother dies in a car accident in the water. Her only family is across the ocean in Scotland to a family she knows nothing about. After a long flight she arrives at her new home to live with her mother’s brother, his wife and their children everyone is very inviting. Emma instantly is drawn to a stranger she meets while saving whales that have been beached on the shores of the island where she will live. While neither can deny the attraction for each other it’s clear that Calum doesn't want to get involved she won’t be good for him.

Keeping apart doesn’t last long and when their relationship comes out both her uncle and his guardian attempt to separate the two. Calum has a secret that makes him different from Emma and in attempt to keep it from her decides that if they are to be together she needs to know. When he reveals his secret Emma learns that all the stories her mom used to tell her are true. Can their love survive being from two different worlds? What happens when Calum has to return to his world? What if his people find out that Emma knows?

I liked Emma right from the start having lost my mom to a car wreck as a teen I was able to really connect with her. I can’t imagine going through it alone at least she had her uncle’s family who was thrilled to take her in and help her with everything. I really liked that Emma is very bookish granted it’s more of the classics but I love them if anything she made me want to go back and read them all over again. I wasn’t sure about Calum at first because clearly he was torn and battling his own issues but as the book progressed I started to see him as perfect for Emma in the end I was cheering on my star crossed couple.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from Silver Moon Light at first I assumed it would be very twilight like but the author surprises me in the best way with a Romeo and Juliet story. Well at least that’s the way I interpreted it and I enjoyed every minute of it. The author has taken a lore concept that I knew almost nothing about nor have ever heard of before and created an intricately woven story. The story-line flows smoothly it doesn't feel rushed however we are left with a cliffhanger that makes you want more. It was refreshing to read a story about a paranormal being I knew nothing about plus toss in a little Nessie teaser and I’m hooked. The characters are easy for the reader to connect with you can’t help loving Emma she’s so sweet and follows her heart even if it leads her into danger. Silver Moon Light is a uniquely written well executed story that captures the heart as well as the imagination. I honestly enjoyed every moment of reading the book staying up super late just to see how it would all play out. The perfect start to an exciting new series, that teens as well as adults will enjoy.

Excerpt
I picked my unused candle off the speaker and headed through the house out to the back porch. As soon as I opened the storm door and stepped outside, I debated going back in for my jacket. The chilly October air sent goose bumps up my arms and over my chest. I figured I wouldn’t be outside long, so I let it go. I set the candle down and reached into my front jeans pocket and pulled out my red plastic lighter (don’t ask, or at least don’t tell my parents). The wind blew across my arms as I held out the lighter and cupped it with my hand, trying to block the breeze. As soon as I ran my thumb over the lighter, the wind died completely and a bright flame sparked to life. I brought the flame closer to the candle and I swear, it jumped from the lighter to the candle wick. It only added to the craziness of the situation. My mind screamed, "This can't be real." The rest of me wasn't so sure.

I stared at the dancing little flame for a full minute waiting for the wind to snuff it out. It never happened. The air was still chilly but calm. I pulled my hand away from the candle and pulled the letter out from underneath my arm. I unfolded it and looked at it one last time. The words were no longer bright red. My blood had dried to an almost dull brown. What the hell are you doing, Connor. This is stupid. Nothing is going to happen.

My hand shoved the paper into the flame of the candle.

Jokingly I chanted, “I, Connor Sullivan, promise my soul to whomever grants my fondest wish. I do this freely, understanding that this is bound in blood, never to be undone. So shall it be. Please accept my oath of blood.” The words rang and echoed into the cold October evening.

The sun set, and just as it dropped over the horizon, I swear the vanishing light chimed like a bell. The slowly burning paper flared in my hand. I lifted it higher as a nagging voice in

my head urged me to blow it out. I sucked in a lung-full of air to do so when the note disappeared with a soft thwump. I didn't get burned, but I had a handful of ashes. Without another thought, I tossed them up onto the air.

I leaned over and blew a soft puff of air over the candle, snuffing the flame. The wind picked back up and the crickets that had gone silent without me noticing started chirping again. I grabbed my candle and headed back to my room, trying to calm the sudden fear spreading through my chest. It's official. You've lost your mind, Connor. They're going to lock you in a loony bin.
