Top Ten Tuesday!

Top Ten Tuesday!
Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke And The Brookish. Who doesn't love lists. They make life easy! And fun!! It's always a never ending topic.

I'm playing around with my own graphic I'll be trying a few out of the next month. I want one unique to me.

This week's topic:

Top ten books that I struggled to read.

I'm kind of odd when it comes to books. I try really hard to read stuff the appeals to me but even if it's not my cup of tea I give it the benifit of the doubt. So I've been known to push through. Only four come to mind because it's been a while since I read a book I didn't enjoy.

1. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon - Still trying to get through this one. The start was so slow I've put it down many times. I want to love it but with my high hopes I'm just nervous I'll hate it. Don't help that the book is over 900 pages.

2. Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin - I've started this one but it's huge. So intimidating. I need to start working on it because I love the show.

3 . Rewrite Redemption by J.H. Walker - I wanted to love this one but only made it half way before I couldn't take anymore. While the story is interesting it just seemed to drag on.

4. Nightshade by Andrea Cremer - I struggled though this one. Wanted to love it but I didn't. I was going to not finish but figured might as well because so many love it.

What's on your top ten list this week?

Synopsis
The most painful scars are the ones you never see.
In her DJ booth at a Cleveland dance club, Casey feels a sense of connection that’s the closest she ever gets to normal. On her college campus, she’s reserved, practical–all too aware of the disaster that can result when you trust the wrong person. But inexplicably, Daniel refuses to pay attention to the walls she’s put up. Like Casey, he’s a senior. In every other way, he’s her opposite.
Sexy, open, effortlessly charming, Daniel is willing to take chances and show his feelings. For some reason Casey can’t fathom, he’s intent on drawing her out of her bubble and back into a world that’s messy and unpredictable. He doesn’t know about the deep scars that pucker her stomach–or the deeper secret behind them. Since the violen
t night when everything changed, Casey has never let anyone get close enough to hurt her again. Now, she might be tempted to try.

Excerpt
“I can’t possibly eat one more bite of potato salad. Oh my God.” Daniel moaned and lay back on the blanket, cupping his hands over his still-flat belly, despite his grumbles. “I’m so full, my pants are literally going to explode off of me.”
“As my English prof would point out, you mean figuratively,” I said in a prim tone. “If your pants literally exploded, we’d be in a world of legal trouble, since this is a public park. And as punishment for your grammar error, I’m making you eat the rest of this potato salad.” I scooped a heaping spoonful out of our bowl and shoved it toward his face.
He sat up and mock glared at me. Dappled sunlight from the setting sun spilled across the dark mop of his head, hit his deep green irises. Before I could react, he grabbed the spoon and flung it, loaded potato salad and all, across the park. “Oh, crap. Sorry, it slipped.”
“Litterer!” I cried out, looking around like I was seeking a police officer. Not that there was anyone else around us except for a couple of young kids playing on the swing set nearby.
Daniel tackled me to the ground and dug his fingers against my right side, where I was super-ticklish. “Narc!” he said, laughing hysterically.
“You jerk!” I swatted up at him and scrambled to get away. I stood and wiped the bottom of my shorts with a huff. “That was a perfectly good spoon.”
He raised an eyebrow. “I’ll buy you another.”
“It was part of a set.” I tugged my tank top down to make sure my abdomen was covered. Thankfully, Daniel had stayed away from my scarred side.
“I’ll buy you six, then.”

“You have an answer for everything, don’t you.” I chuckled.
He stood, peering down at me. His eyes were light and dancing, and my heart hadn’t felt this light in a couple of days— not since my moodiness back in
the library. His hand slid along my unscarred side again, but instead of torture-tickling me, his fingers slipped and danced over my tank top. The warmth of his touch still seared me, despite the barrier.
“Not everything,” he murmured, his attention turning to my mouth. His fingers tightened incrementally on my hip. Something shifted then, sexual tension crackling in the air between us.
I automatically licked my lips, and his eyes flared. I stepped closer. I needed to taste his mouth, right now.
“Oooooooooh!” a high-pitched kid’s voice said from behind me. “They’re gonna kiss!”
I closed my eyes as a light flush stole over my cheeks.
Daniel’s mouth hovered close enough to me that I could feel his breath huffing against my skin. “I need to kiss you,” he said, and the raw edge in his tone had my eyes flying open.
Yes, the need was right there, unmasked, unashamed, completely bared to me. I felt my body respond, my core tightening, heart thudding, hands trembling.
I nodded, leaned my face up. My mouth already hungered for his.
He brushed his mouth against mine, a butterfly touch that didn’t satisfy the growing pulse in me. “Not here,” he said, his words barely a whisper. “I want you alone.”
Alone. The ache I heard in that one word sent shivers of anticipation across my skin. My flesh burst into thousands of vibrant tingles. I gave a mute nod. I wanted it too.

Book Review: The Hazards of Skinny Dipping

Title - The Hazards of Skinny Dipping
Author - Alyssa Rose Ivy
Series - Hazards #1
Genre - New Adult
Published - May 17th 2013
Format - Kindle

Synopsis
This isn't a deep book about first loves or self-discovery. If you want a book like that, I'd be happy to recommend one, but I don't have that kind of story to tell. Instead my story is about rash decisions and finding out that your dream guy is bad in bed. It's the story of when I finally went skinny dipping, and how my life was never the same again. Oh, and it's also the story of my freshman year of college and realizing Mr. Right might have been there all along.

Review

Juliet is headed off to college at the end of the summer and her cousin has left her a to-do list that she must complete one of which is skinny dipping. After her family leaves the beach house Juliet plans to enjoy her little swim to finish off her list. While in the pool her neighbor who happens to be the hot older guy she’s crushed after for years shows up, he even joins her in the pool. What should be a dream come to for Juliet is a night she won’t soon forget as the worst. Sneaking out she doesn’t expect to run into Dylan at college after all he’s a senior and she a freshman.

Juliet arrives early before school starts to pledge her cousin’s sorority even getting accepted into Delta Mu. It’s at a party with her sorority sisters that she encounters Dylan and it turns out he’s not happy she sneaks off and has been looking for her. While the night they shared was underwhelming Juliet falls into a relationship hoping it will be better. While Dylan isn’t perfect he has his own issues but Juliet overlooks them after all she’s been crushing after him forever. While pledging her sorority she befriends one of the Kappas who she forms a friendship with and when things fizzle with Dylan it gets steamy with Reed. Will he be the one to hold her heart? What about when secrets come out?

OMG I loved Juliet but I had my moments where I wanted to beat her with my kindle. I loved the way she completes her list it made me giggle how she jumped into her pool when it was dark and no one was around to complete skinny dipping.  I also loved Reed as we got to know him; he’s the good guy who has a good heart who is exactly what Juliet needed. I thought the chemistry between Juliet and Reed was perfect and loved how they went from friends to more is fantastic.

The Hazards of Skinny Dipping is the first installment of the Hazards series. I started this last night before bed but had to put it down or I would have stayed up all night reading. To be honest I wasn’t sure how I felt about Juliet and Dylan but as soon as we got to know Reed I knew it would all work out. I finished the last 80% of the book in one sitting it was impossible to put it down because I had to know how it was all going to play out. I loved the characters they are easy to connect with and I loved Juliet she very well may be my favorite character from the author’s books. The author has created another brilliant series which captured the heart as well as the imagination. I’ve already picked up the next two in the series and can’t wait to read them all. This isn’t my first book by the author in fact I’ve read most of her books and she’s one of my favorite authors. I highly recommend all of her books so far I haven’t found one I didn’t love. The real question is which one do I love the most. I can’t decide but this one is my current favorite.

Book Review: Compelled

Title - Compelled
Author - Shawntelle Madison
Series - Coveted #3
Genre - Urban Fantasy
Published - May 5th 2014
Format - Kindle

Synopsis
For the past five years, Natalya Stravinsky has dreamed of two things: to rejoin the South Toms River werewolf pack and to be reunited with Thorn Grantham. Fate may have brought the pack back into her life, but unless she journeys to Russia to save Thorn, the love she’s found may be lost again. For a stubborn werewolf like Natalya, no distance is too far, no magic spell too complex to master, because one way or another she will find a way to have everything she has ever wanted.

Review
Compelled is the third installment in the Coveted series that tells the story of Natalya an alpha werewolf who has some issues. She’s spent the last five years wishing that she could be with Thorn but now that she’s earned the right it seems his curse is going to cut that time short. Determined to figure out how to save the man she loves Natalya sets off to Russian with her friend Tyler a dwarf intent on finding out how to break the curse before it’s too late. Around the world a war is brewing between the wizards and the warlock that threatens to spill out in the human world.

Natalya and Tyler arrive at the home of Tamara who is a magic using werewolf who may just hold the key to saving Thorn. Thorn being the excellent tracker that he is finds Natalya at Tamara’s house and time is running out. Tamara agrees to train Natalya to see if she would be able to help her break the curse spell but they are attacked before forcing them all to flee in different directions. Natalya leaves Thorn in attempt to bring more people to fight against the warlocks what she finds is not what she expected but it may just be what she needs. Will they be able to stop the warlocks and save Thorn or will she be too late.

I love Natalya she’s one of my favorite werewolf characters in fiction and I just can’t seem to get enough of her. I love that she’s grown from the first book in the series, she’s turning into a bad-ass werewolf and I see lots of potential. I like that she reaches out to her therapy group when she needs help, and we get to see a little more of them like this book we met Tyler. He may be a dwarf but he’s also a model who just wants to find a wife. He was a great character to accompany Natalya though Russia. I also love Thorn he’s a perfect match or Natalya he supports her and sees her for who she is.

I had high expectations for Compelled after reading the prior books and the author delivered. Compelled is a fast paced action packed novel that takes a werewolf struggling with OCD and tosses her to the wolves you could say. She needs to learn to be tough and overcome her OCD or it may just cost her the one she loves. I was able to connect with Natalya right from the start and love that she just got better as the story progressed. I’m a huge fan of characters growing throughout the books and she has come a long way. I read Compelled from start to finish in one sitting it was impossible to put down because I had to know if she was going to save Thorn. If you’re a fan of Urban Fantasy and love werewolves this is a must read the characters are great and the story is beautifully done.

All this while, Matilda’s shadow had been growing larger and larger. Suddenly, it lunged out of the ground and swallowed her, like a python does its unsuspecting prey.

Nine year old Matilda ends up with a century old book through a series of strange coincidences. And disappears. Her brother and cousins are forced to suspend their hostilities and pursue her to Sceadu, a land inside the human shadow. Once there, the reluctant visitors find themselves chased by the vicious Hefigans, creatures of Sceadu. However, everything changes with the revelation of an ancient prophecy that foretells the doom of the world they left behind.

With the stakes suddenly raised, the children must now navigate the dangerous terrain, overcome grave challenges, and unlock the secrets of the shadow. But can they do it in time to thwart the plans of the treacherous Hefigans? Or will they succumb to the guile of a ruthless enemy who is equally determined to destroy mankind?

Sceadu is a fast-paced adventure which blurs the boundary between the physical and the psychological, the real and the mythical.
You can find Sceadu on Goodreads.
Excerpt:
Matilda sat at her old wooden desk, staring into the thick yellowed pages of a book under a dull moth ridden beam cast by the night lamp. But every time she blinked, it seemed as if the words had played a round of musical chairs. And the moths, fluttering through the words at times and hovering over them at others, did not make things any easier.

Matilda was about to turn the page when there was a tug at her feet. It was a very gentle one, almost imperceptible. Surprised, she glanced down, but there was nothing. Perhaps it’s just my imagination, she thought. She was about to shake her thick dark brown curls out of her face when she felt it again.

Matilda pushed her head down and looked into the dark void with furrowed brow. Her skinny legs stared back. But before she could decide on whether she had actually felt anything, there was another tug, an unmistakable one this time. And another one. The truth suddenly dawned upon Matilda. It was her shadow, trying to drag her into itself.

Matilda jerked back the chair, kicking hard at her shadow. But it snapped back, pulling at her even more viciously. She stomped upon it repeatedly. But the dark grey shape began jabbing at her feet and ankles. Matilda pushed herself up and made a frantic attempt to run. But her legs refused to move, and she almost toppled forward.

All this while, Matilda’s shadow had been growing larger and larger. Suddenly, it lunged out of the ground and swallowed her, like a python does its unsuspecting prey.

I grew up in the quiet and beautiful neighbourhood of Shivaji Park in Mumbai, India.

My schooling happened at the famed Bombay Scottish School where I was a rather conscientious student while my college years were spent at D. G. Ruparel College. I completed my bachelor of science in electrical engineering from Purdue University with a brilliant semester at the University of New South Wales. I followed it with a master of science in management from Lancaster University, a post graduate program in management from Indian School of Business, and a post MBA master in international management from Thunderbird School of Global Management. And yes, there is a simple explanation to all this. I love campus life.

I started my professional career as an engineer at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Once the monotony got to me, I returned back to join our family business in Mumbai, where I have been ever since. More recently, I have settled in the role of a consultant in my own marketing and branding firm, Media Panther.

My foray into the world of writing happened in 2003 after I had a dream that compelled me to stumble out of bed and put pen to paper. But that book is yet to be written. In the meantime, I happily string words together in my quest for Nirvana.

In my spare time, I enjoy collecting old coins, reading fiction, indulging my creativity (I have recently written and produced a short film, Freedom of Expression), travelling to exotic destinations, watching movies, and listening to music. I am also keenly interested in the subjects of psychology, mythology and ancient history.

I live with my wife and son in Mumbai.

Book Blitz: Distance

Title - Distance
Author - Andrea Heltsley
Publication date - September 23rd 2014
Genre - Comedy, New Adult, Romance

Synopsis
Lexi has sworn off guys for good.
She’s always been a hot mess, but accidentally finding her boyfriend of three years cheating on her is just too much for her to handle.
All she wants is to get this summer done and over with, so she and her best friend Elena can travel cross country for college. Then she will finally be free of this town, the friends that dropped her in favor of her ex, and her klutzy reputation.
Lexi’s policy was working perfectly, until a guy named Mason comes to her rescue. Not once but twice in one night. For once, her mishaps have led to something good.
She’s feeling things that scare her, but she’s drawn to him. Can Mason break through her walls, or will she stick to her plan and steer clear of him?
This is a new adult romantic comedy. Recommended for ages 17+ due to mature content.

Excerpt
Without a word, I pulled Elena away and let her lean on me for balance. The guy grumbled at me. I steeled my eyes at him until he finally turned and left. She pouted for a minute, but by the time we were halfway across the yard, she had already forgotten about it.

Every step we made, she struggled a bit more to keep upright. By the time we made it to the back door, I had to set her down to stop and breathe. My muscles were cramped from her weight and I wasn’t sure how I was going to get her through the house, the front yard, and all the way down the street to the car.
Preparing to make the trek through the house into the masses, I pulled Elena up and promptly fell over. All I could do was brace myself for the fall, but then strong hands caught me and set me back up. Relief spilled through me and I turned to see who had saved me and Elena.
It was Mason and he was grinning at us. His teeth were white and perfect, as I could only expect from someone so gorgeous. He was even better looking in the light. It really was too bad I was anti-men right now.
“Thanks, I was almost a goner. You’ve saved me twice tonight.”
“It’s no problem, Lexi. Is this your friend?”
“Yeah, she’s pretty much past drunk and almost comatose. I’m not sure how I’m going to get her to the car. I barely got her across the backyard.”

Review
I received Finding Mr. Darcy: High School Edition in return for an honest review as part of the tour hosted by YA Bound. Liza is obsessed with Jane Austin particularly Pride & Prejudice which she gets from her mom. She even has her mother’s copy of the complete Jane Austen works. With a new guy in school her best friend is determined that one of them will be the one. While her best friend is focused on the new guy Liza still has a thing for her ex-boyfriend Ryan who is off limits. When Liza is caught sneaking around with Ryan her friend Will (The new guy) claims he’s using her as a Friend with Benefits causing Liza to break it off.

When Liza learns that her teachers have entered her into a contest to visit England and all things Jane Austin she’s thrilled to learn she’s won.  Only she won’t be going to her dream trip alone, Will the new guy is going too. While Liza is torn about her feelings for Ryan she heads off on her dream trip with Will not expecting anything to happen but things suddenly change. And when she makes new friends with a local guy what’s Liza to do. She’s gone from being the nerdy JA girl to having all the guys’ attention. Who will capture her heart and be her Mr. Darcy? After that’s always what she’s been looking for her Mr. Darcy just like the book.

I loved Liza right from the start we have a lot in common like we both lost our mom to car accidents, and love Jane Austin books. She’s one of those characters who’s innocent and naïve in the beginning but grows thoughout the book. I liked Janie even though the way tried to manipulate Will into liking Liza frustrated me a bit. Both the guys each have their own positives Ryan and Will but in the end I think she’ picked the right one and it worked out in the end.

I’m a huge fan of re-tellings of Jane Austin books and have read several of them over the years but this is my favorite so far. The author does a fantastic job taking the old concept and putting her own unique twists on a classic story. I think all of us girls are secretly searching for our own Mr. Darcy till the right guy who comes along even if he isn’t a perfect Mr. Darcy he’s right for us. I loved Liza her story was entertaining and a great coming of age story. This is my first book by the author but I’m curious to check out her other books. After reading the novel I feel the need to watch the Pride & Prejudice BBC version again. I may just have to find a copy it’s been ages. A must read for Jane Austin fans as well as people who haven’t read the JA books it may be a perfect bridge to the classics.
