Genre - Adult Fantasy Shifter Romance
Format - Kindle freebie

Synopsis

Astra Evans is a curvy, delicious firebrand who thinks that the only good shifter is a dead shifter.

With two exceptions, of course. ;)
And Kane Ortiz is NOT one of those exceptions.
Kane’s a mountain-sized grizzly bear shifter who wants one thing.
To avoid a group of shifters hunting him down.
Except he’s got a problem. Astra. That damned, sexy, hottie with the curves that don’t end.
Good luck, Kane. You’re gonna need it.

Review
I picked this one up as a kindle freebie without knowing till I had started it that it was book 2. Astra has issues with shifters because they are the cause of her mother’s death when she was young even though she was raised by a bear shifter. When a stranger comes to town she knows right away he’s a shifter and wants him gone but before he can leave she finds herself falling for him.  Kane isn’t looking for a place to be tied down he’s on the run from three bounty hunters after he saved another shifter. When an avalanche leaves the pair stuck in a cabin will they find that maybe it’s time for her to like shifters? Will Kane realize he might be staying in the valley?

I like Astra she has a good head on her shoulders, and she is stubborn what’s not to like about a girl who isn’t afraid to push back. I like that Astra was willing to give it a chance and open up to Kane because they work really well together. I liked Kane he’s a good guy with good heart who’s just right to bring Astra out of her shifter issues.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked up Seduction and was pleasantly surprised to find a captivating shifter romance. While the novel does have a lot of steamy moments I found them to be tastefully written, and they fit in the story. I really enjoyed the characters I was able to connect with them.  I loved that Astra is a curvy girl it’s refreshing and just made me love her more. While the story is shorter than I prefer I felt that the author did a great job creating a unique little romance that is perfect for a quick read. This is my first novel by this author and already I’ve become a quick fan. I enjoyed her writing style it’s a well written short story. I’m already looking forward to checking out the rest of her books.

Book Review: Heat Wave

Title - Heat Wave
Author - Rachel Real
Series - A BBW Shifter Romance (California Bears Book 1)
Genre - Adult Erotic short story
Format - kindle unlimited freebie
Published - March 27th 2015
Adult - 18+ content

Synopsis
Callie Boggs packed everything to pursue her dream of becoming a Hollywood actress.

After a few auditions go horribly wrong, she runs into a smokin' hot Hollywood werebear stuntman named Rogue Stockton. Rogue's daredevil lifestyle opens up Callie's world to thrills she never imagined. But Callie fears he carelessly risks his life...

Can Callie convince her werebear to give up the adrenaline rush for love?

This 8,000+ word story is an HEA Romance.

It takes place in the larger world of the California Bears Series, but is complete and can be read as a standalone.

Steamy scenes ahead! This novella has hot passionate alpha sex scenes. If curvy gals gettin' their groove on with shifters aren't your cuppa tea, pass this one up. But if you like big girls and brawny heroes--enjoy!

Review
I picked up heatwave a little while back after my book club talked about a famous book in Canada about bears. Callie has moved to LA with hopes of making it big but after her first casting goes horribly she runs right into the path of Rogue a stuntman. Little does Callie know when she accepts his date that not only is a he a stuntman who’s determined to break his brothers record but he’s also a werebear. After their first date ends in disaster with her learning the truth will Callie give him another chance?

I wanted to love Callie but she’s kind of frustrating she’s just she falls so easily for Rogue’s charm. I didn’t mind the insta love they both have for each other but gosh a motorcycle ride and a fair and they are in love. This is my first book by the author and it’s not bad however I found the story was a little weak. However for a kindle unlimited read it delivers exactly what I expected a little action and some steam moments between our couple. I did love the Callie isn’t the skinny girl but does have curves it was very refreshing.  It’s not my favorite shifter story but it’s not bad. For a quick read maybe twenty minutes while I had some downtime it was nice to get the whole story. I might consider checking out the rest of the books.

Book Review: The Hunter's Moon

Title - The Hunter's Moon
Author - Shawntelle Madison
Series - Windham Werewolves #1
Genre - Urban Fantasy werewolves
Published - December 16th 2014
Format - Kindle freebie

Synopsis
This is the first story in the Windham Werewolves series. Episodes will be released once per month. This is not a standalone story.

Kaden will do anything to protect his pack, including saving a dying werewolf hunter. But Cynthia would rather take him down than become his mate.

Review
Cynthia is a hunter but hasn’t been able to due to her cancer but thanks to her brother making a deal with Kaden that might just change. Will Cynthia be able to accept help from her enemy a werewolf that she’s spent her whole life hunting? What is Kaden risking by healing Cynthia?

I like Cynthia she’s not stupid and realizes that maybe Kaden isn’t the typical werewolf who is starting trouble but really cares about his pack. I also liked Kaden willing to risk his heart to help his pack. They may come from different worlds but they work well together.

I picked up The Hunter’s Moon as a kindle freebie since it was by an author I enjoy. Typically I prefer my books to be much longer. However I think she’s done a great job creating a short little romance novel that I very much enjoyed. While it’s a short novel only 71 pages I didn’t find it lacking in story it has everything I need to be a happy camper. A fast paced story filled with action, romance and snow it was easy to read in just a short hour. My only complaint is that I want more, and I say that because I’ve loved the other werewolf books by the author.  I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

So we come up with #Dustoffyourbookshelf where you display a book that you have had on your shelf for a long time and probably forgotten about. If you have time to grab it off the shelf and read it that is great, but you don’t have to read what you display. You can be creative in your displaying or you can just take a picture of it on your shelf. We are mainly doing this to get into instagram but thought it would be fun to do a post on Thursdays since we didn’t have a lot of post normally for Thursdays.  If you would like to follow along feel free to make a post and link it below. Dead-Jed-Cover
Dead Jed is Shaun of the Dead meets Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Jed's not your typical junior high geek. He is, to use the politically-correct term, cardiovascularly-challenged. And while his parents have attempted to shield him from the implications of being 'different' for as long as they could (Jed was 8 and at a friend's sister's birthday party when he blew his lips off onto the cake in front of everyone, finally prompting the “Big Talk” from his parents and an emergency SuperGlue repair by his dad), 7th grade at Pine Hollow Middle School as a target of Robbie the supreme school bully and his pack of moronic toadies is rapidly becoming unbearable.
From being stuffed in a filled trash can as “dead meat” and into a trophy case as the bully's “prize,” to literally having his hand pulled off in the boys' room (Jed's always losing body parts. Luckily, a good stapler and some duct tape and he's back in the action) and a cigarette put in it and try to frame him for the recent reports of smoking in the school, Jed's had enough and is ready to plan his revenge. Besides, it's awesome what you can do when you're already dead!

Dead-Jed-2-Cover
The first part of seventh grade was rough on Jed, but things are looking up now that Christmas is almost here. As with past Christmases, Jed asks for the one thing he’s always wanted–a dog–and again, his parents tell him they’re not ready. But fate has a different plan when Jed sees a dog get run over by a car. Then, it happens. Jed suddenly has a pet, Tread, a zombie dog bearing his namesake–a tire tread down his back. Jed may have gained a dog, but he loses his best friend Luke, who fears the way Jed created his undead pet.
When Jed returns to school, he finds a mysterious group called the No Zombies Now Network spreading rumors of the dangers the undead pose to normal people. Forced to disprove Hollywood stereotypes, Jed has his work cut out for him as stories of a zombie dog begin to circulate. Jed could be expelled if he can’t expose the NZN Network as a fraud. Jed needs help from his kind of girlfriend Anna, especially after he discovers Luke has joined the shadowy group.
Once again navigating the treacherous waters of middle school, Jed does his best to stay in one piece. Only this time he’ll need even more duct tape and staples than usual.

Book Review: Perfected

Title - Perfected
Author - Kate Jarvik Birch
Genre - Dystopian YA
Published - July 1st 2014
Publisher - Entangled Teen
Format - Kindle

Synopsis
Perfection comes at a price.

As soon as the government passed legislation allowing humans to be genetically engineered and sold as pets, the rich and powerful rushed to own beautiful girls like Ella. Trained from birth to be graceful, demure, and above all, perfect, these “family companions” enter their masters’ homes prepared to live a life of idle luxury.

Ella is happy with her new role as playmate for a congressman’s bubbly young daughter, but she doesn’t expect Penn, the congressman’s handsome and rebellious son. He’s the only person who sees beyond the perfect exterior to the girl within. Falling for him goes against every rule she knows…and the freedom she finds with him is intoxicating.

But when Ella is kidnapped and thrust into the dark underworld lurking beneath her pampered life, she’s faced with an unthinkable choice. Because the only thing more dangerous than staying with Penn’s family is leaving…and if she’s unsuccessful, she’ll face a fate far worse than death.

For fans of Kiera Cass’ Selection series and Lauren DeStefano’s Chemical Garden series, Perfected is a chilling look at what it means to be human, and a stunning celebration of the power of love to set us free, wrapped in a glamorous—and dangerous—bow.

Review
Ella is a pet genetically engineered girl created to be the perfect human pet. Picked third Ella is chosen by the congressman who helped to pass the law that people could own human pets. Ella was groomed for the last four years by the kennel to be the perfect pet trained to play piano filled with expectations how she is to be treated. Quickly she learns that things may not be the way that the kennel trained her when her playmate is a little girl. Not all of the household is thrilled with her arrival and she learns that she’s not the first pet but the second the other being sent away but other than she was sick they couldn’t treat her.

The more time Ella spends living with the congressman she learns that maybe she doesn’t want to be a pet anymore. The more Ella gets to know Penn his son she finds feelings she didn’t know existed or expected to ever have. When the night of a party Ella is kidnapped taken to a safe house by the neighbor in attempt to free her even when she doesn’t want to leave starts the catalyst that will change her life forever. As her relationship grows with Penn what will the Congressman think if he finds out? Will she be sent back to the kennel with the fated red door?

I liked Ella she’s so sweet innocent learning to live after spending her whole life expecting to be a pampered pet. I like that as the story progressed Ella became more than just a pet in fact a girl in love willing to risk it all for the one she loves. I love Ruby the poor girl she needs friends, with her mother things can’t be easy.  I have hopes for her in the future. Than we have Penn at first I didn’t like him but he grew on me and turned out to be a perfect match our little Ella.

I wasn’t sure about this one but I’ve seen it around a lot and the concept I found fascinating. The idea of human pet’s is very interesting and I was curious to see how it would play out. Set in modern day times in a world where genetic engineering has created the perfect human girl for the top 1%. While I found the concept interesting as the book progressed I saw Ella as nothing more than a piece of property and it started to bother me. While I enjoyed the book I just didn’t love it like I had hoped that I would. The characters are great and the concept is unique but something was bugging me. I kept waiting for Ella to see a darker side of being a pet but I guess we will have to wait for the next book. I’m looking forward to the next book because this one ended in a cliffhanger that if it hadn’t been an ebook would had made a trip across the room. I liked the authors writing style she’s created a captivating novel filled with suspense and intrigue it’s a great example of a dystopian novel.

1.What are you currently reading?
2.What did you recently finish reading?
3.What do you think you'll read next?

What Are You Reading Wednesdays

How it works

Grab the book your currently reading and answer the following questions.

1. What's the name of your current read?

2. Go to page 34 in your book or 34% in your eBook and share one complete sentence.
3. Would you like to live in the world that exists within your book? Why or why not?

1. Perfected by Kate Jarvik Birch - Goodreads
2. “I’d say barbarity!” the woman yelled. “You’re keeping another human being prisoner. You think you’re so high and mighty that you can own another life. Well, I won’t stand for it and I’d bet most of the voters in our district won’t stand for it, either.”
“I’m sorry you feel that way,” she said. “What does Patsy have to say about it?”
The woman’s face grew red. “Patsy is a schnauzer. You can’t compare a person to a dog. It’s a completely different situation. She’s completely dependent on me. Besides, I treat her like one of the family.”
3.  It's modern time only people get genetically engineered human girls called pets. They are treated like a spoiled pet or like a slave used as social status. I've seen a little bit of the darker side of pets. I wouldn't want to live in a world where people owned human pets.
How about you? How are you coming on your reading?

Kat MacTaggart is a girl who has a plan for everything—including her holiday ski trip to Monterra with her best friend. Everything is going according to plan until she finds herself careening out of control down a mountainside and being rescued by a guy who looks like Superman’s hotter Italian cousin.

HRH Prince Nico is intrigued by the woman he saved on the slopes and her refusal to date him. He offers Kat a deal—let him show her his country and he’ll pay her to write articles that will help Monterra’s tourism industry. Kat agrees, but given her past and lingering distrust of men, she has one condition—absolutely no kissing.

Thanks to the claims of a jealous British noblewoman and the schemes of a meddling paparazzo, Kat’s rule doesn’t seem to be a problem at first. But the more Kat gets to know Nico and the people around him, the harder it is to remember her keep-your-distance plan. Should she stick to it or risk everything for a chance at happily ever after?

Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday
Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating. In my case not so patiently waiting for the new releases, which I lack.

It's no surprise that I picked a dystopian novel it's one of my favorite genres. I've read one of these authors prior books but I'm curious to see how this one will play out. It sounds like my type of book. I just wish I didn't have to wait to so long to get my hands on it.

My choice this week is
Illuminae
by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff
Expected Publication October 20th 2015
(Goodreads)

Synopsis
This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do.

This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet's AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it's clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she'd never speak to again.

Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

The only time Zoe gets to be herself is when she hides under her comforter to read X-Men comics, sending jealousy stabs at everyone who attends Comic-Con. But when Zoe’s sister takes her car for a ‘crash and burn into a tree’ joyride, her parents get her a replacement. A manual. Something she doesn’t know how to operate, but her next door neighbor Zak sure as heck does.
Zak’s a geek to the core, shunned by everyone in school for playing Dungeons and Dragons at lunch and wearing “Use the Force” t-shirts. And Zoe’s got it bad for the boy. Only Zak doesn’t want Popular Zoe. He wants Geek Zoe.
She has to shove her insecurities and the fear of dropping a few rungs on the social ladder aside to prove to Zak who she really is and who she wants to be… if she can figure it out herself.
