For once, mated werewolves Charles and Anna are not traveling because of Charles’s role as his father’s enforcer. This time, their trip to Arizona is purely personal, as Charles plans to buy Anna a horse for her birthday. Or at least it starts out that way...

Charles and Anna soon discover that a dangerous Fae being is on the loose, replacing human children with simulacrums. The Fae’s cold war with humanity is about to heat up—and Charles and Anna are in the cross fire.

Opening
"Okay, " Said Charles Cornick, younger son of the Marrok who ruled the werewolves in North America and also, Anna had come to believe, the rest of the world.

Teaser
“There aren’t any horses that would suit me in Montana?”
He smiled. “I have an old friend who breeds Arabians. I talked to him on the phone the other day and it got me thinking about your birthday and about how it is time for you to get a different horse to ride.”
Anna sat back. An Arabian. Visions of The Black Stallion danced across her mind’s eye. She couldn’t stop her happy little sigh.
“I like Jinx,” she said.
“I know you do,” Charles said, “and he likes you.”
“He’s beautiful,” she said.
“He is,” agreed Charles. “He’ll also see you saddle up another horse with a sigh of relief and go back to sleep.”

“Arabians look like carousel horses,” Anna said, still feeling as though she were betraying the amiable gelding who’d taught her so much.

Review
Anna and Charles are back and this time they are headed to Arizona to say goodbye to an old friend of Charles and find a horse for Anna. Anna can count on one hand the people that Charles would consider a friend. Just after arriving in Arizona they are forced to spring into action saving the grandchildren of Charles friend from an attack by a fae.  They aren’t able to save everyone in order to keep her children safe Chelsea had to fight the fae who attempted to control her and drained herself of blood that was the only way to keep sane enough to not hurt her children. The only way to save her is changing her into a werewolf, which isn’t how it’s normally done but sometimes you just have to make the choice.

Instead of saying goodbye to a dying friend and finding a horse for Anna they are forced to hunt down the fae who attempted to kill one of their own.  When the visit the school they learn that one of the students isn’t even a student but a Fetch a bundle of sticks meant to give the illusion of the student who’s been taken. With the help of the FBI & Cantrip they may just be able to find the Fae who kidnapped the girl and attempted to kill one of their own. As they dive deeper into who the rough fae is they learn more about his past. While at it Charles will need to find time for his friend as well as finding Anna a horse of her own. Will they find the fae who ripped apart a werewolf?

I love Anna and Charles they are by far one of my favorite paranormal power couples they just work so well together.  I like that Charles and Anna complement each other they each have something to offer the other besides love. I like that Dead Heat gives us a little more into Charles past seeing a glimpse of his life before Anna. I liked several of the new characters we met in this book and I hope to see them in the future novels be it Alpha & Omega or maybe in Mercy Thompson’s novels.

I feel like I’ve been waiting forever for Dead Heat to come out and couldn't wait to get my hands on a copy. I love the world that Charles and Anna live in with the supernatural beings coming out to the humans the wolves are in a positive light thanks to the fae causing problems. Since I’m kind of a werewolf fan thanks to the author’s books I much prefer to see the fae being the ones to cause problems plus there is so much potential for them with all the stories of stuff that goes bump in the night. I loved the way we had snippets of romance mixed with mystery, suspense that kept me on my toes and enough action to leave me breathless.  I really liked the doll collector fae he’s interesting, and I was curious to see how it would all play out. I really enjoyed Dead Heat it was a perfect installment in the Alpha & Omega series I can’t wait to read the next one. Dead Heat is beautifully written from start to finish a captivating novel that I found hard to put down. I can’t wait  to read more of Charles and Anna hopefully we won’t have to wait too long.
