Book Tour: Terra Excerpt #4 & Review

On Tour with Prism Book Tours...

gretchen-001Hello there! My name is Gretchen Powell. I am 24 years old, half-Chinese, and the owner of two adorable miniature schnauzers. I am an occasional drinker of classy wines, and I wrote a book.
By day, I work for a government contractor in our nation’s capital.
By night, I binge on episodes of Doctor Who and sleep fitfully.
Sometime in the mid-afternoon, I write another blog called Honey, I Shrunk the Gretchen! about weight loss, food, fitness, and my life.
Some of my favorite things include polka dots, Harry Potter, pretty much any TV show that airs on Thursday nights (yep, I'm talking Vampire Diaries #notashamed), and playing the ukulele.
Terra (Terrestrials, #1)Terra
by Gretchen Powell
Paperback, 286 pages
Published December 12th 2012 by Hopewell Media

Premise:

A broken and desolate Earth. A young girl struggling to survive. A lost boy with a powerful secret.

A discovery that will change everything.

In the distant wake of a plague that has decimated the Earth's population, humanity is split in two: The rich and powerful live in skycities that float overhead, while those who remain on the ground have gathered in settlements strewn across a dying planet. Eighteen-year-old Terra Rhodon is a terrestrial--a denizen of the barren groundworld--who makes her living as a scav. Long abandoned by her father, her caregivers gone, Terra supports herself and her younger brother, Mica, by scouring the earth for discarded scraps and metals to recycle for profit. One day, while on a routine scavenging run, she discovers something that shocks her home settlement of Genesis X-16. When the value of her discovery is revealed, Terra's world is turned upside down.

Terra suddenly finds herself asking questions no one will answer. Her search for the truth leads her to Adam--a beguiling skydweller unlike any she has ever met. But Adam has secrets and a quest of his own, and with him by her side, the world Terra thought she knew begins to unravel. Soon her discoveries unearth a terrifying conspiracy that has the potential to shatter everything--a revelation that will test the bonds of loyalty, family, and love.

Review

I received Terra as part of the tour hosted by Prism Books Tours in return for an honest review. The earth has changed greatly over the years the rich live in floating cities over the terrestrial compounds that spread out over what’s left of earth. The planet is dying after a floating city crashed to the ground unleashing plague that wiped out millions. Terra has been raising her younger brother after her grandmother passed away. Her father abandoned them after her mom died heading to the floating sky cities he’s from. In order for them both to survive Terra had to become a scavenger going out into the field picking up anything of value and selling to the sky cities. While she scavenges for things to sell her little brother attends school.

It’s while scavenging that Terra comes across an unusual machine which she turns into the collectors only in hopes of making a bigger haul what she receives is more credits then she could have hoped for. Causing her to question what it was that she turned over the collectors and why she received so many credits? Terra heads out again in hopes of finding another treasure that will allow a better future. While out scavenging she risks her life against the tribe, is rescued by a stranger and changes her future forever.

WOW!!!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE TERRA!!!!!Such a fantastic story I finished in one afternoon unable to put it down. Terra is a brilliant mix between Dystopia and Sci fi in my opinion the story just flows beautifully. The story is a fast paced adventure filled with twist and turns that keep you on your toes till the end.  The concept is unique and fascinating I could imagine earth experiencing something traumatic happening to the earth putting people in floating cities. I love the characters Terra is easy to connect with it wasn't hard to get drawn into her story she’s been doing what she can to look after her brother. I can imagine if I was in her shoes I would be doing the same thing for my little brother. We have her little brother Mica whose super smart well beyond his years and then we have Adam. What else can I say but I love Adam he’s so perfect for Terra in every way. I love Terra’s story. My only complaint is I don’t have book two I need it like yesterday!

 5 out of 5 Stars

&

You've scored some steel to buy some grub. Where in Genesis X-16 are you shopping today?
Excerpt:
“Why’s that? What’s the Rationing?” asks Adam.
“Oh, to live a skyboy’s life,” I say with a sigh.
Mica shoots a silencing look at me. “The Rationing happens after the monthly delivery of foodstuffs from up top comes,” he patiently explains to Adam. “After all the good stuff goes to the shopkeepers, we get to fight between the leftovers. I mean, we still have to pay but it’s like, what’s the word for it…”
“Wholesale,” I finish for him.
“Right. Wholesale. Most people in the North and East Quadrants don’t even bother with the Rationing, it’s such a madhouse. They have enough credits to buy their food direct from the shops.”
“I see,” says Adam. “So the other people from around here, knowing about your payout…”
“Yeah. They’re not going to be okay with us trying to get in on the Rationing,” I say. “Mica’s right.”
“As usual,” Mica mutters.
“All right, little bro, you win. Here, Adam,” I pull the filter rings off my finger and toss them to him, “get one of these on the kitchen faucet. Mica, tuck in your shirt. Looks like the two of us are going grocery shopping.”
