Book Review: Inferno of the Undead

Title - Inferno of the Undead
Author - Laura A. Hansen
Series - Zombies in Paradise #3
Genre - YA Horror Zombies
Format - Kindle review copy
Published - September 2015
Publisher - Midwest CYAN

What would you do if your parents were stranded in the zombie apocalypse half a continent away? For sixteen-year-old Charlie and his younger brother Jack, the answer is a road trip like no other. In search of their parents, they scale the continental summit and then descend into the scorching desert canyons of the southwest. Along the way, they battle zombie Elvis, the air force, and a psychotic dry cleaner lurking among the zombie hordes. Inferno of the Undead is an epic tale of two brothers’ plunge into the fiery twisted heart of the apocalypse.

Review
I received Inferno of the Undead in return for an honest review from the author. Inferno of the Undead takes place not long after the end of the prior book. The boys made it away safe and are staying with Granny while their parents are being quarantined by the government. After all have to make sure the Zombie disease doesn’t spread this time like the cruise ship did. However when their parents don’t come home the boys make an excuse to Granny and head off to bring them home, but before they can make it to the train they get split up. Sending Jack to the Mannings on the train and leaving Charlie behind. At least he won’t have to make the journey alone when he teams up with Aric.

Before meeting up with the Mannings Jack jumps off the train in part because his brother didn’t catch up and makes the rest of the journey by foot. Charlie also makes the journey by vehicle but along the way they encounter lots of zombies. When the boys finally meet up it’s at a zombie bloodbath and they get separated from the group. Together they head along the river for Vegas where their last contact of where their parents are. Will they make it to Vegas before the military blows up the whole area before the zombies get out? Or will a crazy guy on a boat be the end of them?

I like Charlie and Jack more and more each one has grown so much since the cruise ship.  It’s interesting to see them each out on their own against the rising hordes of zombies. They both had to grow up so fast acting more mature than most teenagers. They are also smart thinking and quick on their feet when it comes to doing what needs to be done to survive.

Inferno of the Undead is a fast paced action packed loaded zombie novel. It follows the story of two boys who have encountered zombies in paradise locations. The concept for the zombie’s is interesting starting on a cruise ship now they are loose in Vegas. The boys are great characters easy to connect with I feel like I’ve watched them grow up so much since the first zombies. I like the authors writing style the book just flows from start to finish it was hard to put down because I had to know how it was going to end. Inferno of the Undead is a well written installment in the series, and perfect for those fans of zombie novels. I’m hoping this won’t be the last book in the series because I’m curious to see what happens next with the zombies and if they will really end up blowing up Vegas.

Book Review: Avalanche of the Undead

When the brothers join forces against the zombies to rescue their parents, they learn how much stronger they are together.
With horror, humor and romance, Book Two in the Zombies in Paradise series offers nonstop action designed to thrill teens.

Review
I received Avalanche of the Undead in return for an honest review from the author.  Avalanche of the Undead continues not long after the end of the first book in the series. Charlie and his younger brother Jack saved a cruise ship from zombies that threatened to overtake it. Now they are flying together high above the ground when another zombie pops up forcing their plane to crash-land in a snowy mount resort area. Their dad is taken off to the hospital and the airline has put them up in town with debit cards to enjoy the ski town till he’s all better.

Stuck in snow heaven the boys should be having the time of their lives after the cruise nightmare. However Charlie is sure that the zombies are still around, and determined to stop them before they take over the town. However things don’t go as he planned and soon zombies are turning up on the ski slopes. As if that’s not enough an avalanche has them trapped and the police are after Charlie. Will Charlie and Jack be able to save the town this time before the zombies catch them.

I like Charlie and Jack they aren’t your typical zombie slayers but they handle the job well. Befriending new allies in the battle against the zombies that are once again hunting them. Maddie and Christian seemed to handle and accept the zombies much better than I would have. I kind of feel sorry for these guys having to deal with zombies again so soon. It can’t be easy but I know if they hadn’t been there the town would have been overrun so they had to be there to save the day.

I’ve had this one sitting on my kindle for a while recently I haven’t been in a zombie craving however by the end of the first chapter I was hooked. I really enjoy a series that has the same characters because it makes them easy to connect with since I already know them. In this book we are in a mountain town locked in by an avalanche and an ever growing zombie attack looming in the shadows. Thankfully this isn’t Charlies and Jacks first zombie encounter so they know what to do taking it into their own hands. Avalanche of the Undead is a fast paced story that was hard to put down I ended up reading it in a few short hours while my kids were in school. I love a good scary zombie story while this one is scary it also has just enough humor to break up the scary. I highly enjoyed this installment and look forward to starting the next one.

Review - Undead

Title - Undead
Author - Kirsty McKay
Series - Undead #1
Genre - YA Zombies
Published - September 1st 2011
Publisher - Chicken House
Format - Hardcover

Synopsis

Out of sight, out of their minds: It's a school-trip splatter fest and completely not cool when the other kids in her class go all braindead on new girl Bobby.
The day of the ski trip, when the bus comes to a stop at a roadside restaurant, everyone gets off and heads in for lunch. Everyone, that is, except Bobby, the new girl, who stays behind with rebel-without-a-clue Smitty.
Then hours pass. Snow piles up. Sun goes down. Bobby and Smitty start to flirt. Start to stress. Till finally they see the other kids stumbling back.
But they've changed. And not in a good way. Straight up, they're zombies. So the wheels on the bus better go round and round freakin' fast, because that's the only thing keeping Bobby and Smitty from becoming their classmates' next meal. It's kill or be killed in these hunger games, heads are gonna roll, and homework is most definitely gonna be late.
Combining the chill of THE SHINING, the thrill ride of SPEED, the humor of SHAUN OF THE DEAD, and the angst of THE BREAKFAST CLUB, Kirsty McKay's UNDEAD is a bloody mad mash-up, a school-trip splatter-fest, a funny, gory, frighteningly good debut!

Review
Bobby has recently returned to the UK after spending several years living in the US. Her mother signs her up for a ski trip before school starts hoping she will be able to make friends.  Unfortunately for her making friends isn't really working so when the bus stops at a café for food she has no desire to get off the bus. Bobby is stuck on the bus with Smitty the troublemaker and the bus driver when things go south quickly. While the bus driver steps off to see what hit the bus Alice returns being chased by their teacher screaming about everyone being dead. They also add the pasty nerdy kid to the group after checking out the gas station.

Soon Zombies are intent on get them forcing the group to go extreme by blowing up the gas station killing all their fellow classmates. The group heads for the café in the morning hoping to find wifi that will allow them to get help.  When they are overrun by more zombies they run back to the bus attempting to escape but they run across a tree blocking the road. They start thinking that maybe this whole zombie outbreak was planned because of the camera and road blocked. They set off down the road with two new members hoping to find a place to stay safe and get help. When they find a castle they learn the truth of the outbreak but will the make it out to tell about it?

Bobby is the new girl at school without any friends she sets off on a ski trip that will change her life. She’s smart, stubborn and knows how to kick ass when she needs to. She’s paired with a bad boy who wears leather and who can really wield a dwarf ax. I had my moments where I wanted to strangle Malice I mean Alice she frustrated me but adds to the story. Pete was a fun nerdy character who I rooted for even if he wasn't kicking butt like Smitty.

I've had this one on my shelf forever and when I saw it on amazon I had to pick up a copy. I’m a zombie addict I can’t seem to get enough of them. I love the idea for the zombie outbreak it’s one of those concepts I could totally see happening in the future. Undead is a fast paced action thrill that keeps you sucked into the story to the end only to tease you for the next one. Even though it’s an intense zombie thriller the author has thrown in a little humor to keep it light. I found the characters easy to connect with you can’t help cheering them on as they fight the zombies. I found the authors writing style enjoyable she created a brilliant story that I found captivating. This was one of those books I had a hard time putting down I read it in one afternoon. I can’t wait to start on the next one thanks to the ending of this one. If you love zombies Undead is a must read.
5 out of 5 stars

A little taste of Undead
I would rather die than face them all again.
Die horribly.
In a messy, fleshy, blood ’n’ guts kind of way.
It is a total no-brainer.

Book Blitz: Zia the Teenage Zombie and the Undead Diaries

ZIA, The Teenage Zombie & the Undead Diaries
Release date: September 20th 2015

Summary from Goodreads:
Zia would give anything to be a typical teenager... again. Heck, she’d settle for being a vampire or smelly werewolf, but a member of the walking dead? The lowliest of all the monsters? No way! Nothing is worse than being a skin-sloughing, limb-losing, maggot-housing, brain-craving undead girl. Nothing.

It wouldn’t be so bad if humans didn’t insist on “Living Impaireds” wearing bands to keep their insatiable appetites in check. And if LIs want to coexist with humans, then rules must be followed, no matter how ludicrous they might seem. Why do undead teenagers have to go to high school anyway?

Zia does her best to blend in and go unnoticed, but when a new group of LIs are bused in from another school and she finds herself part of a growing horde, all bets are off.

Besides, rules are meant to be broken—especially when an unbeating heart is pulled in two different directions.

About the Author
I hear voices. Tiny fictional people sit on my shoulders and whisper their stories in my ear. Instead of medicating myself, I decided to pick up a pen, write down everything those voices tell me, and turn it into a book. I’m not crazy. I’m an author.

For the most part, I write contemporary Young Adult novels. However, through a writing exercise that spiraled out of control, I found myself writing about zombies terrorizing the Wild Wild West—and loving it. My zombies don’t sparkle, and they definitely don’t cuddle. At least, I wouldn’t suggest it.

I live on the benches of the beautiful Wasatch Mountains with two lovely children, one teenager, and a very patient husband. I graduated from Utah State University with a B.A. degree in English, not because of my love for the written word, but because it was the only major that didn’t require math. I can’t spell, and grammar is my arch nemesis. But they gave me the degree, and there are no take backs.

As a child, I never sucked on a pacifier; I chewed on a pencil. I’ve been writing that long. It has only been the past few years that I’ve pursued it professionally, forged relationships with other like-minded individuals, and determined to make a career out of it.

Review

I received Cruise of the Undead from the author Laura A. Hansen in return for a honest review. Charlie with his little brother Jack are spending their Christmas break on a cruise ship with their parents. Charlie isn't thrilled with the idea, and when his little brother befriends some younger boys he's even less thrilled but there is one bright light Savannah the older sister to one of the boys. Charlie heads down below looking for a dark place to hid and listen to music on his Iphone. He ducks into the theater to catch a magic act from Harry; however the act is giant disaster when Harry is attacked by the rat he pulls out of the hat.

Charlie decides to check what happened to Harry when he hears about him dying from the rat attack but then finds the shambling shell of Harry. Charlie and Jack attend a tea on this ship with his mother while stuffing themselves with deserts when suddenly Harry shows up and begins to attack the guest. The tea is a panic as everyone flees to their rooms. It's when they get to their rooms that Charlie decides he needs to find out what's really going on. Charlie and Jack began to prepare for what they both know is coming a zombie Apocalypse aboard the ship they decide the best choice is to get off while they still can.

The pair team up with Savannah Nolan and Truman loading their rooms with weapons, food and supplies they will need while they attempt to rid the ship of the zombies. Charlie’s parents don't believe him they think he's gone off the crazy end ranting about zombies so he does what everyone else in his position does he locks them up safe and sets out to save the crew. They ship stops next to their next port but no boats are lowered and the group decides to go ashore on their own to call for help but there freedom from the zombies is short lived when they find them coming from the boat after them. They do however get a call out but none of them are sure if help will come in time and they set off for the ship to save rest of the boat, plus their chances are better and too many zombies on the island.

I love a good zombie story and Cruise of the Undead delivers just that. It's a fast paced adventure story that you can easily get lost in till you reach the end. I've always had a fear of zombies especially with the news lately but I can't seem to get enough of them. I jumped at the chance to read a story about zombies on a cruise ship however my hubby may not be thrilled I'm not dying to take a cruise anymore. I love the characters Charlie is a great character add in his brother Jacks sense of humor and you have a great mix to keep the story flowing. The story is written with enough comic to it that you can't help laughing thought the story it’s a great mix of horror and humor making for an entertaining read. I just really loved the story the author takes the zombie concept and puts her own unique twist on the story creating a book I had a hard time putting down. I can't wait to get my hands on the next on in the series, I'm curious to see where our next adventure will be.

Published - September 3rd 2014
Genre - Paranormal, Young Adult

Synopsis
When an undead woman with serious de-comp issues stalks sixteen-year-old Lyla Grimm, her hope of rescuing her rock-bottom reputation takes a back seat. Especially once Lyla’s new talent of resurrecting the dead draws the attention of Eric, a Grim Reaper with a guitar and a chip on his shoulder.
While Lyla navigates the gossip-ridden halls, Eric works to gain her trust and discover why Death’s clients aren’t staying down. If she passes on her gift, his death-messenger destiny might be altered. But the closer he gets to Lyla, the less sure he is of his plan. The dead are way easier to deal with than the living.

Lyla and Cassie appreciate good food and aren’t ones to hit the salad bar line in the school cafeteria. But as Lyla’s troubles begin to pile up, her appetite begins to suffer… which is a real shame. And Eric’s not been able to enjoy real food since his job began. They’re missing out.

Excerpt from Chapter 28

Her straw wrapper refuses to tear off in flakes larger than two millimeters. “What are you doing here?” she asks, tearing off tiny pieces.
“Having lunch with you.”
“Why would you do that?”
“Once you understand my intentions, you’ll realize that I only want to protect you.” I point to her tray. “You should eat something.” Her blushes show up too
easily. She looks tired and thin.
“I can’t.” She eyes the Salisbury steak on her tray and then slides it toward me. “You want it?”
I press my forefinger on the tray’s edge and scoot it back towards her before the smell becomes too clear. “No thanks.” For the first time, the food doesn’t look disgusting and the smell doesn’t bother me, but I might not be able to fake my reaction once I put a bite in my mouth. Repulsion is hard to hide.
“Why do you wear gloves all the time?” She looks at my hands resting on the table. “It’s not even that cold yet.”
“I like the way they feel. I have cold hands.” I watch her eyes as I speak, hoping she’s buying what I’m selling. I’d rather not confess why. My label is hard to live with. “So, what happened with the table of jocks before I walked in? I feel like I missed the main event.”
Her gaze drops to her tray. She rips off a corner of her napkin and rolls it into a tiny ball. “Nothing really. He was making comments about the missing bodies and my family.”
“That bothered you?”
Her expression crumbles when I say that. “Yeah. He was making fun of my family being twisted. I’m not ashamed of what my dad does. It’s a business. He and my mom treat the families who lose people with a lot of care and compassion.”
“I don’t doubt that. Your mom seems like a good person.”
At the mention of her mom, a small smile lifts her lips. I bet she doesn’t realize she did that.
“So the fact that the corpses aren’t staying is bad for your family, huh?”
She nods. “Can we change the subject, please?” Her fingers trace the edge of her tray. “Where are you from?”
I pause. That’s a loaded question.
“Did you forget? You an Army brat that moves around or something?”
“Nah,” I shake my head. “I lived in Miami last.”
“You have brothers or sisters?”
A chill rushes down my back and I zip up my jacket. But the leather is no match for the demons crawling beneath my skin right now. This interaction, this conversation becomes an inquisition, a cross-examination as I sit here. The chill settles in my bones, aching. “Yeah,” I say in a cough. “But I haven’t seen them in a while.” Is that right? Did I?
“I’m sorry. You must miss them.” Her eyes look misty. She’s probably thinking of Ben, who’s somewhere on the campus alive. Her world is near perfect, yet she doesn’t see.
I exhale harder to push away the cold infecting my body, chilling my insides, and churning anger. “We can talk about your gift, if you want.”
“I already told you, this isn’t a gift,” she whispers.

And the recipe for Salisbury Steak.
Salisbury steak is a big favorite at my house. I’ve used several recipes over the years but this one continues to get rave reviews. I found it on AllRecipes.com a long time ago.

Evolved Publishing presents the award-winning Wanted: Dead or Undead

(Book 1 of The Zombie West Series) by Angela Scott. (Young Adult, Zombie
Western Romance)Trace Monroe doesn’t believe in luck. He never has. But when a fiery-headed cowgirl saunters through the saloon doors, wielding shotguns and a know-how for killing the living dead, he believes he just may be the luckiest man alive. Trace wants to join "Red’s" posse, but she prefers to work alone—less messy that way.

In order to become her traveling companion, Trace has to agree to her terms: no names, no questions, and if he gets bit, he can’t beg for mercy when she severs his brain stem. He agrees, knowing only that Red is the sharpest shooter he’s ever encountered. The fact she’s stunning hasn’t escaped his attention either.

What he doesn’t know, is that Red has a very good reason to be on top of her game. She not only has the answer for how they can all outlive the plague taking over the wild, wild west, she is the answer.

Excerpt
Red lost track of how many bullets she'd fired, until the dreaded click of an empty chamber. She knelt on the ground, with an eye on the approaching mob, and slipped her hand inside one of her saddlebags in a frantic search for more ammunition, but came up empty.

Damn it.

She searched the other saddlebag, and though the cool metal cartridges graced her fingertips, she had to let them go. The zombies fell upon her. Swinging the rifle above her head, she slammed the butt of the weapon into the face of the closest walker, breaking its bloody jaw, but failing to hinder its progress. She swung again and connected with its skull, which bust open and sent the zombie sprawling to the ground at her feet. One down, but six more ready to destroy her, each aiming for a limb, an organ, a bit of flesh, a chunk of her existence.

"Reload." Wen yelled. The blade of his machete sung through the air and sliced through the neck of the nearest zombie, separating the head from its body. "Do it! Now!"

He beheaded two more as she grabbed a handful of bullets and jammed them into the rifle, her hands shakier than normal. She cocked the gun in one swift movement and fired just left of Wen, taking down the decomposed walker.
"Jeez, watch it!" Wen eyed her as if she was crazy.

To prove she was a better shot than both of the men, she fired once more to the right of Wen, within inches of his shoulder, sending a bullet into the zombie he planned to decapitate.

He whipped around. "Okay, I get it!"

No more time for games. She rolled onto her side and fired more bullets as the band of walking dead crept nearer.

Wen sliced through heads with a skill that impressed her, and held them at bay while she reloaded—a team effort she highly appreciated.

Red had no idea what Cowboy was up to, but heard him firing off shots of his own. She worked with Wen to kill the crowd of wagon zombies that advanced upon them. Mothers, fathers, teamsters, small children—it didn't matter. Sentiment had no place in zombie annihilation. She didn't miss a single target, as each forehead was penetrated and the dilapidated bodies collapsed to the ground.

When no more approached from her direction, she waited for a second to be sure, and then rolled onto her belly to take on any coming from behind. Only there weren't any. A pleasant, yet unexpected surprise. Cowboy stood there, watching and waiting with his rifle raised. Wen held his machete across his chest, ready as well. Silence prevailed, but for the sound of their own rapid breathing. As quickly as it had begun, it ended, but none of them were willing to let their guard down just yet.

"Everyone okay?" Cowboy asked, the butt of his rifle still pressed against his shoulder. "Anyone bit? Hurt?"

Wen shook his head. "I'm good. I'm real good."

Red slowly stood, her rifle shaking in her hands. "I'm good too."

"Perfect." Cowboy lowered his weapon and smiled. "Couldn't have gone better."

"We need to burn the bodies. Pile them. Set them ablaze. But"—she indicated the bloody mess that covered her from head to toe with an unnatural tremble in her fingers—"I need to get this off of me."

Cowboy scanned her body and lingered on her bare legs poking out from under her night shirt.

"Go." He turned away out of respect. "We'll keep an eye out and start putting them in a pile. Get cleaned up."

Red stepped over the zombie corpses littering her path and returned to the wagon that had provided such peace the night before. Her hands twitched more now, but she managed to toss the remaining dead zombie out onto the ground before sinking onto a clean area of the mattress.

She inched up the bottom of her soiled night shirt to reveal what she knew was there all along—a gaping hole on her thigh, several inches deep. The bite mark bubbled and spilled red, foamy droplets onto the mattress below. She didn't know which zombie had bit her or when it happened, not that the details mattered, only that the pain was excruciating and its liquid heat radiated through her veins. She balled her fist and punched the mattress once, then twice more.

Damn it.

With nothing more to do, she leaned her head back against the side of the wagon and waited.

Review
I received Wanted: Dead or Undead as part of the tour hosted by BadAss Marketing in return for an honest review. Elisabeth Red is a girl with a secret heading across the countryside looking for her brother the only family she has left and avoiding zombies at every turn. Trace aka the Cowboy catches sight of Red in town, and sets out to win her trust so he can turn her in for a bounty. When the pair encounter Wen a loner rejected by the survivor communities because of the color of his skin the trio team up heading west. While resting up before heading west the next morning Red encounters a zombie revealing her deep dark secret.

When the guys learn the truth about Red, why she’s being hunted they vow to protect her. They group is almost zombie bait when they happen upon a ranch with a woman and her children. Little do they know that she has a hidden zombie baby and gone off the deep end feeding the baby victims. They hardly escape with their lives but in doing so they bring with them two children one of which shares Red’s secret. They find long term shelter adding an ailing old man and his daughter. The group settles down into a routine but the zombies come, along with a group of government with Red’s brother as well as a man that hurt Red. Each one has their own struggles but the zombies are looming will they survive the zombie attack looming outside the camp? Will Red’s past ruin everything?

I think both Red and Cowboy have an interesting relationship the way the connected. I spent most of the first book hoping for a romantic interest. We also get to know Wen, Caroline & her father as well as the two children they saved from a crazy mom. It’s an unlikely bunch but together they overcome everything to become a family.

Wanted: Dead or Undead is unlike any zombie book I’ve read before. Set in the old west you’re instantly reminded of a traditional black and white movie only with zombies. I think it’s a fantastic spin on the zombie concept taking the overplayed and creating a whole new story. I’m a huge zombie fan, but this one steals the spotlight for zombies. An action packed adventure right from the start, it was hard to put down it just sucked me in and didn’t let go. I started reading last night but knew right away if I didn’t put it down within the first few chapters I would be up all night till I finish. The characters are engaging, easy to connect with you just have to know what’s going to happen next. I think the author has done a great job of writing a story that really fits with the western theme. It’s a fantastic start to an exciting zombie trilogy. I can’t wait to read the next two books and see what happens to Red.
