Synopsis

What do you do when the one you love is also you worst enemy? Trapped in a destiny she does not want, Cassie finds herself lost and adrift, until he walks into her life, turning it upside down and awakening her in ways that she never dreamed possible.

Cassie is stunned and devastated to learn that she belongs to a long line of vampire slayers known as The Hunters. A murderous rampage by a group of elder vampires has left the Hunter line decimated and the remaining Hunters scattered around the world. With her friends Chris and Melissa’s aid, Cassie struggles to rid the world of the monsters that murdered her parents. Though Cassie knows it is her fate, she chafes against her heritage, and is resentful of the shortened lifespan that has been placed upon her by the circumstances of birth. Struggling to get through every day, Cassie finds herself simply going through the motions of living. That is, until Devon arrives. Tall, dark, and mysterious his arrival turns the school, and Cassie’s life, upside down. Fighting against her fierce attraction to him, and the chaos he represents in her carefully ordered days, she is irresistibly drawn to him. Though worried that what she truly is will place Devon in danger, she is unable to fight her feelings for him. He is the one light, and the only source of hope she has in a world that revolves around death and fear. What she does not know is that Devon has some dark secrets of his own, secrets even more frightening and dangerous than hers. Secrets that threaten to tear them apart forever.

Review

Buffy the vampire slayer meets Twilight. Cassie lost her parents at a young age to the vampires. Now along with her two best friends she’s a vampire hunter from a long line of slayers. Unlike Melissa and Chris who have no issues killing vampires for Cassie it’s different. She’s a tough girl who has her own issues and deals with life day by day. Suddenly she sets eyes on Devon a stranger she finds herself inexplicably drawn to.

Cassie decides to give it a chance seeing what happens with Devon. Her friend Chris who can read people can’t get anything from him but Melissa is positive when she had a vision of him coming and can sense how he feels about Cassie. However her love life will have to wait as something dark and evil is stalking them in the darkness. The group suspects it’s an elder vampire will they be able to keep everyone safe and not be killed by the elder?

I had a hard time getting into Kindred it’s been on my kindle forever because it was a freebie and I love the beautiful cover. I didn't connect with Cassie at first she kind of frustrated me but she won me over. I think the way the author creates the hunters is unique and the vampires are just that but Devon is special. Overall the story wasn't bad it’s like I said before very Buffy the vampire slayer meets twilight. I was always curious to see how this combo would work out and for the story it did work. The book starts out a little cheesy but gets better as you progress by the end I was sold. I will keep my eyes open for the next one.

Published November 26th 2012 by Creatspace

Meet The Second Chance Institute (SCI): Earth’s benevolent non-profit by day, Thera’s totalitarian regime by night. Their motto: Because Everyone Deserves a Second Chance™. Reality: the SCI subjects Second Chancers to strict controls and politically motivated science experiments like Cleaving—forced lifetime union between two people who have sex. Punishment for disobeying SCI edicts? Immediate Exile or death.

Meet Kira Donovan. Fiercely loyal, overly optimistic, and ensnared by the promise of a full-ride college scholarship, Kira signs the SCI Recruit contract to escape memories of a tragedy that left her boyfriend and friends dead.

Meet Blake Sundry. Bitter about being raised in Exile and his mother’s death, Blake’s been trained to infiltrate and destroy the SCI. Current barrier to success? His Recruit partner—Miss Goody Two Shoes Kira Donovan.

Meet Ethan Darcton. Born with a defective heart and resulting inferiority complex, Ethan’s forced to do his SCI elite family’s bidding. Cleave-worthy Kira Donovan catches his eye, but the presiding powers give defect-free Blake Sundry first dibs.

clean slate complex
by Megan Thomason

Meet The Second Chance Institute (SCI): Worldwide non-profit and do-gooder organization. Their motto: Because Everyone Deserves a Second Chance at Life(TM). Reality: hidden behind every kind act is a dark agenda designed to gain control and force societal and moral extremes. Currently, the SCI’s pushing Project Liberate, a program to woo the poor and downtrodden into their Clean Slate Complexes—where “everything is provided” from jobs to food, shelter, clothing, and education. Unfortunately, as with all things that sound too good to be true, there’s a catch…

Meet Alexa Knight. Feisty, tough and currently homeless in Los Angeles, Alexa agrees to help the SCI in return for medical care for her sick mother. When she starts to suspect there’s more to the SCI than meets the eye will she believe Adam—the boy who saved her life and the SCI’s biggest champion, or Joshua—the attractive enigma who sings about conspiracy theories and pretends to be someone he’s not?

Full of action, humor, romance, twists and turns, clean slate complex is a companion story to the highly-praised dystopian novel, daynight. It can be enjoyed before or after readingdaynight.

Review
I received Daynight in return for an honest review as part of the tour hosted by Prism Book Tours. Kira has witnessed the house with her boyfriend and best inside blow up. After the accident she is offered a chance at a full ride college of her choice scholarship if she signs up for SCI. SCI is a special place that offers everyone a second chance. For a year she will live as a Second Chancer like the others following the rules but if she breaks a rule it could change her life forever. Like the rule that if she hooks up with a boy she’s forced to stay at Thera forever.

Kira will share a common area with Blake whom she went to school with but doesn’t really know. Blake has his own reasons starting with be raised exiled from Thera and the death of his mother. When he was little his father took the family from Thera to Earth, and trains him to infiltrate SCI Blake doesn’t know what they originals are but he plans to find out, learning they are planning for Kira and Blake to be cleaved even if it means revealing something to Kira. They will learn what’s really going on at Thera risking everything.

I was thrilled to have the chance to review Daynight because I’m in love with the dystopian genre. Daynight doesn’t disappoint a captivating story right from the start. I love the way the author creates Thera a parallel world that captures the imagination. The book is filled with twists and turns that kept me guessing till the last page I had a hard time putting it down. I will admit it’s a little confusing at first with the jumping around between Kira, Blake, and Ethan point of views but it gets better. The characters are engaging, I had an easy time connecting with all of them and they all have their own unique story. I found Daynight to be a book both teens as well as adults will enjoy.

This Week's Question:

Give us a sneak! What are you reading? Tell us about a fun or fail scene in your current read.

Answer:

I just started my current book this morning. It's a new series and author for me. I'm also not very far into the book either so I can't say I've read a un or fail scene yet. However I want to share because I love to share. I just finished reading this section and it made me giggle so it's a perfect share though a little long.

I soon got to see my old nemesis, but not in the circumstances I'd expected. Tony's fat face looked the same as always, which wasn't surprising since he hadn't changed since 1513 except for the clothes. He was wearing what I liked to think of as his goodfella suit—a pinstriped number that looked like something he'd stolen off a bouncer at a speakeasy, and maybe he had. He liked the suit because someone had told him once that vertical stripes made him look slimmer. They lied. Tony died at more than three hundred pounds, which on a five-foot-five frame meant he was approximately the shape of a soccer ball with legs.

And no amount of diet and exercise was gonna change that now.

Even with the weight and the fashion sense from hell, Tony looked better than his chief enforcer, Alphonse, who stood, as always, behind his master's left shoulder. Although they were only reflections in a large mirror at the moment, I could tell they were in the old stronghold in Philly. I was surprised that even Tony would have that much nerve, to move right back in, but I should have known; lack of balls wasn't one of his failings. I knew where they were because Tony was arrayed on his usual chair, a throne that had come from a bishop's palace back when lots of carving and gilt were the in thing. The back came to a point a good six feet off the ground, but Alphonse didn't have to stretch to see past it. His height didn't help his appearance, though. He was built like someone who knew how a thug was supposed to look had put him together, but he had one of the scariest faces I've ever seen. I don't mean that in a sexy, Hollywood villain kind of way—the guy was just plain ugly. I heard once that he'd been one of Baby Face Nelson's hit men before he was turned, but it looked to me like he was the one who'd been hit—repeatedly, with a baseball bat, in the face. As a kid, I'd been fascinated with the fact that he had almost no profile because his nose stood out no more than his Neanderthal brow line.

I always crack up when movies depict vamps as gorgeous, sexy and with an endless closet of expensive clothes. The fact is, when you're dead, you look pretty much the same way you did when you were alive. Hundreds of years can teach a person a few beauty tricks, I guess, but most vamps don't bother. Some of the younger ones make an effort because it makes hunting easier, but most of the older ones don't give a damn. When you can make someone believe you look like anything from Marilyn Monroe to Brad Pitt with merely a suggestion, makeup starts to look like a waste of money.

How about you?

Title - The Selection
Author - Kiera Cass
Series - The Selection #1
Genre - YA Dystopian
Format - HC
Published April 24th 2012

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself--and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

Review

America Singer life may not be glamorous nor is she rich but she’s in love with a boy who happens to be one step below her status. When the new of the Selection she has no desire to take part but her mother wants her to at least try for the family. Aspen her secret boyfriend feels like if she doesn't try then he'll feel guilty and what if the rest of their lives. When America hears from Aspens mother she thinks he’s going to propose she tries to encourage him by buying food and surprising him with dinner. Instead Aspen freaks because he should be providing for her and ends their relationship.

America is shocked when they call her name, but with everything that happened with Aspen she accepts the offer knowing it will better the family not because she wants to be with the prince. However as she starts to get to know the prince she learns he’s not the guy she assumed him was and her plans to keep him as just a friend go out the window. Not only does she have to deal with the emotions of liking the prince she also has to be careful of rebel attacks and now Aspen has showed up at the palace. He’s still in love with her and not ready to let go.  What’s a girl to do?

I been dying to read The Selection since it first came out but I have a huge review pile and just never got around to it. I’m thrilled to find the time today to sit down and read The Selection it was well worth the wait. The Bachelor meets Revolution only way better. I didn't like the way that Aspen acted with America so I was a little frustrated to see him pop up in the guards because I'm all for Team Maxon. I really like America she’s smart, stubborn and reminds me a lot of myself with the musical artistic side. I think the concept is fantastic and the story is brilliantly written. I easily gobbled The Selection up in one afternoon. Now I have to wait for the hardback of The Elite to show up. I can't wait till next year to see how it all will end.

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday with Mandy!!
Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke And The Brookish. Who doesn't love lists. They make life easy! And fun!! It's always a never ending topic.

This week's topic is:

Mandy's top ten words/topics that will make her buy a book

1. Paranormal - Zombies, shapeshifters and vampires are my top three but I'm expanding into new paranormal creatures.

2. Dystopia & Post apocalyptic - One of my current favorites I can't get enough of these types of books. I don't even have to read the synopsis I just know I want it.

3. Dragons - I've always had a weakness for dragons. I am a huge Anne McCaffrey fan but I've been expanding into the dragon shapeshifters recently Yummy!

4. Debut - I can't help it since it's the first book by a author I just have to give it a shot. I've found a lot of gems this way.

5. Harlequin - I have a few favorites that I won't even read the synopsis I just buy them. Betty Neels, Renee Roszel, & Roz Denny Fox.

6. Kick-butt-female characters - I love a female character who doesn't need a man to protect her. So if the book is about a female character who kicks butt I'm all for it.

7. Horses - Since I was little I've always had a passion for books with horses so when I find one that happens to have horses/unicorns/pegasus I have to add it to my collection.

8. Do covers count? I'm a sucker for a beautiful cover. I will buy without checking out the synopsis in hopes of finding an awesome book.

I think that's a good list for the week.

How about you?

Blog Tour: Review: Fractured Soul

Title - Fractured Soul
Author - Rachel McClellan
Series - Fractured Light #2
Genre - YA Paranormal
Publication - February 12th 2013
(Goodreads)(Amazon)(B&N)

Synopsis

Llona will do whatever it takes to protect her new found friends and home, but the dark plot that is threatening Lucent Academy, a school that’s supposed to be a safe place for Auras, may be too powerful for even Llona to defeat. This fast-paced tale of love, loyalty, and overcoming the darkness will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last page!

Review

I received Fractured Soul in return for an honest review as part of the tour hosted by Dark World Books. Fractured Soul starts right after the end of Fractured light. Llona is headed off to Lucent Academy to learn more about the Aura's but she's not going alone her good friend May who is also a Fury is going to be joining her on the new adventure. Unfortunately Llona won't be spending time with Christian since it's against the rules for a guardian and his ward to be romantic they are supposed to be keeping apart. When they arrive at the academy Llona's room which is bigger then her old room has an odor of blood but she's the only one who can smell it.

While at the academy she has an encounter with a Vyken which leaves her suspecting that more is going on at the academy then she suspects. She also finds Christian at the academy instead of training young guardians like she expected. Llona knows she needs to get to the bottom of what's going on with the Vyken she slain, as well as why they are at the school. However the bite she received has left it's poison inside of her making the darkness grow inside of her. Not only will Llona have to figure out what's going she will have to learn to control the darkness before it's too late.

Just like the first I really enjoyed reading more about Llona she's quickly stealing a place in my heart. I love the unique world the author has created for Llona and her friends to live in. Fractured soul is a fast paced action adventure filled with conspiracy and romance. I was really excited to see Christian and Llona's relationship continue it's a sweet relationship that just enhances who Llona is as a character. I also enjoyed the fact that May also has a special gift that kept Llona from being alone. Fractured Soul is a brilliant continuation in Llona's adventure and I can't wait to get my hands on Fractured Truth.

Blog Tour: Review: Fractured Light

Title - Fractured Light
Author - Rachel McClellan
Series - Fractured Light #1
Genre - YA Paranormal
Publication - February 8th 2012
(Goodreads)(Amazon)(B&N)

Synopsis

I’m dying, I thought. This was unexpected and not at all how I envisioned my death. I was supposed to die gardening in a flowerbed as a hundred-year-old woman, not as a seventeen-year-old trapped in a lake beneath inches of ice.

Llona Reese is used to living on the run. After the Vykens killed her parents, she knew they would eventually come for her too. She can’t take any chances. But when she starts to make friends for the first time in her life, she gets careless and lets her guard down. Big mistake.

As an Aura, Llona can manipulate light and harness its energy. But if she wants to survive, Llona will have to defy the Auran Council and learn to use her power as a weapon against the Vyken whose sole desire is to take her light. Now she’s caught in something even bigger than she can understand, with a power she can’t wield, and no one she can trust, except, just maybe, a mysterious stranger.

In this breathtaking and romantic adventure, Rachel McClellan delivers a truly mesmerizing story that will keep you guessing to the very end.

Review

I received Fractured Light in return for an honest review as part of the tour hosted by Dark World Books.Llona Reese isn't your typical teenager; she’s spent most of her life on the run after losing both her parents. She’s been raised by her dad’s younger brother who hasn't handled his brother’s death well. Her mother was murdered by a Vyken while her father was out of town instead of protecting her, and later dies in a fatal car accident. Llona is a Aura with the ability to use light to help calm people however she’s not like the other Aura’s who attend a special school. Against her aunt's wishes she has chosen not to attend the Aura’s school but live with her uncle Jake and attend her senior year.

It’s her last year of high school and this time she’s going to enjoy it. Blending in has always been the Aura thing but instead Llona enjoys sports which help her use up her energy. She also has a little crush on the new math teacher and finds herself drawn to the new handsome football star that just transferred in. As Llona gets to know Christian she starts to learn more about herself, and who she is really destined to be. When Llona learns that Christian is more then he appears she convinces him that she can help fight the Vyken who’s hunting her. Will they be able to stop the Vyken in time?

Fractured Light is a unique paranormal adventure that captures the imagination right from the start and doesn't let go till the end. I found the concept for the Aura’s and Vyken fascinating I love the idea of Llona using the light as a weapon. The author does an awesome job creating a complex story filled with connectable characters that leave you wanting more. I love all the action, hints, and twists and turns that left me guessing till the end. The characters are easy to connect with you can't help loving Llona she’s my favorite type of character one who solves her own problems and fights her own bad guys. I think the relationship though forbidden between Llona and Christian was beautifully started and I hope for more in the next book. I look forward to the next chapter in Llona’s adventure.

Update: On the mend

Update

I’m alive starting to get everything back in order. My trip to the doctor revealed I've got a Pepcid ulcer and we are checking out if my gallbladder needs to be removed. She gave me some super awesome Prilosec and the pain is almost gone, just the pain from my gallbladder and I'll be back to normal. I need to not stress so much seems to be the consensus on the ulcer aspect.

I've missed my little blog and followers. I've not been reading a whole lot and kind of gotten more behind on my current reading schedule but one day soon it will be all caught up.  I plan to catch up in the next day or two on a few of the posts that I've missed like my teaser, top ten and even my wow. I'm looking forward to showing what I've gotten over the last couple weeks Saturday.

Thank you all for the get well wishes.

I'm thrilled to be back.

Review: Echo by Alicia Wright Brewster

This post was supposed to be up last week but due to my sick week it wasn't going to happen. I'm very sorry to miss the tour but I want to share my review.

Echo
by Alicia Wright Brewster
Publication: April 25th 2013

by Dragonfairy Press
Genre: YA Sci-Fi
(Goodreads)(Amazon)(B&N)

Synopsis:

The countdown clock reads ten days until the end of the world. The citizens are organized. Everyone's been notified and assigned a duty. The problem is . . . no one knows for sure how it will end.

Energy-hungry Mages are the most likely culprit. They travel toward a single location from every corner of the continent. Fueled by the two suns, each Mage holds the power of an element: air, earth, fire, metal, water, or ether. They harness their powers to draw energy from the most readily available resource: humans.

Ashara has been assigned to the Ethereal task force, made up of human ether manipulators and directed by Loken, a young man with whom she has a complicated past. Loken and Ashara bond over a common goal: to stop the Mages from occupying their home and gaining more energy than they can contain. But soon, they begin to suspect that the future of the world may depend on Ashara's death.

Review

I received Echo in return for an honest review as part of the tour hosted by Xpresso Book Tours. The world is ending the Seers have seen the future however the elders have been resetting the time-line back ten days in hopes of being able to change the future.  Ashara isn't a practitioner she has no elemental abilities but with the timeline reset she assigned to the Ethereal task force. Her leader also just happens to be her ex-boyfriend Loken whom she still has feels for even though he ended it nine months earlier.

Ashara’s best friend Rey is a Breather meaning he can control the air and he’s thrilled to be part of the Breather task force and drive a transport. Ashara on the other hand isn't thrilled after having lost her little brother to a mage attack before. As the slowly run out of time she learns that she does have the ability to manipulate ether in the air and that they will be fighting mages. As she dives deeper into the truth she learns more than she bargained for that she is the cause for the end of the world. Will she be able to save everyone or will they be forced to reset again?

I instantly fell in love with Echo. The concept is unique and exciting I found it refreshing a new spin of the apocalyptic concept. The characters are amazing I felt like I was connected with Ashara the story gives us a full spectrum of emotion I shared with her. Plus the book is filled with great secondary characters like a love interest, best friend, a secret keeping elder or two and many more. Echo’s story pulled me in right from the start and didn’t let go till the end. An action packed adventure it keeps you on the edge of the seat filled with twists and turns plus a little romance. I found the writing style beautifully done it’s a story that teens as well as adults will enjoy. I look forward to reading more books by Alicia Wright Brewster.
