Manga Review: Attack on Titan Volume 13

Title - Attack on Titan Vol 13
Author - Hajime Isayama
Series - Attack on Titan #13
Genre - Manga horror
Published -
Format - Kindle

Synopsis
In this post-apocalyptic sci-fi story, humanity has been devastated by the bizarre, giant humanoids known as the Titans. Little is known about where they came from or why they are bent on consuming mankind. Seemingly unintelligent, they have roamed the world for years, killing everyone they see. For the past century, what's left of the human race has hidden in a giant, three-walled city. People believe their 100-metre-high walls will protect them from the Titans, but the sudden appearance of an immense Titan is about to change everything.

Review
I watched the first few episodes on nextflix but it’s not in English so I opted to go with the manga to check it out because the complete series exists instead of just season one. This is my first manga so I don’t really have any prior experience to base it off when it comes to the art or story. I like the art it’s not over complex when it comes to telling the story it seems to work for the gritty horror story. So far the story while is well developed it’s easy to get lost turning the pages.

The thirteenth installment has a lot more information about the survey corps going after the crown. They have the real royal who should be sitting in the crown as well as Eren who can shift into a titan and hope that it will be enough to have a peaceful takeover. However the current king isn’t ready yet to give up his crown. In this installment Eren is tested by Hange to learn more about his transformation and if he can harden his skin light the titans in the walls.

I really enjoy the series it’s smart giving a little bit of story tossed in with the action as they encounter the titans. In each installment we are given just a little more info in finding out what is really causing the titans and how to stop them. I admit I wish they had been in color but I’ve gotten used to the black and white of the books. It’s really a well-crafted series a perfect mix of story to art, blending so easily into a captivating story. The characters I feel I have been able to connect with even though it’s little snippets we are given glimpses into their pasts revealing more than they share. As my first manga it’s created a quick love for them and after I catch up with the series I can’t wait to start a new one it’s a perfect way to relax if you have about 20 minutes. I can’t wait to see what will happen next.

New Release: Five Seven Five

Title - Five-Seven-Five
Author - C.E. Wilson
Genre - YA Fantasy
Published - November 20th 2015
Publisher - C.E. Wilson
Take only what can be used. Take only what won’t be missed. The Creators are watching all of us.
White Frost lives in a world cloaked in darkness and ignorance. While most people in her society are content to live in fearful peace, White’s cousin brings her words from the mysterious Unknown. Strange collections of written words that tease her that there may be more to the world than candlelight and dank hallways.
But when tragedy strikes, White can no longer rely on the words to give her solace. She must discover what lies beyond the only world she’s ever known… no matter the cost.
Eventually, White finds her way to the skies and there she discovers that the tantalizing clues of her words are only pale reflections of the massive and wondrous world above. Colors she never thought possible. Blinding light. And an impossible being who may or may not be the Creator of it all.
But this information comes at a price White Frost is not sure she can pay.
White’s hunger for knowledge proves to be her greatest strength and weakness as she strives to learn more. But as she learns, she has to wonder – is there such a thing as too much information? And what will happen as it brings her closer to a being who could destroy everything she’s ever known?

About the author
C.E. Wilson is currently living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with her husband, beautiful daughter, a chubby beagle and two cats. They are all the loves of her life. When she’s not writing young adult fantasy novels, she enjoys writing short stories on her Deviant Art page. She loves to write stories involving giants and little people (also known as GT) and she can't decide what she loves more: horror movies or shoujo manga. She has a bachelor's degree in English Education so she has a soft spot for older literature authors including John Milton, William Shakespeare, and stories such as Paradise Lost and Beowolf. On a side note, nothing helps her to write more than drinking good beer and watching The Twilight Zone.

This Week's Question:
What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?

Answer:

I don't like being cold but I do enjoy a little ice cream every now and than. I've taken to making my own when the craving hits. It's super easy two ingredient base that makes a super creamy easy to scoop ice cream.  (Here) I've added pie crust and lemon pie filling a few times and made a lemon pie ice cream. It's not the most healthy but if I have a ice cream craving it works out great. This one was peach pie ice cream.

Glowing Eyes. In the chaos of the moment, the only thing I could focus on were the yellow eyes that followed my every move. They were eerie and seemed more at home on an animatronic creation than on the living, breathing animal that had me cornered in the alley.

“You weren’t kidnapped. You were saved.”

“I was tied up and thrown in the back seat of a car. That’s kidnapping.”

I love this cover because it reflects the book so well. The image of a girl standing alone on a desolate world is a perfect depiction of my protagonist, Ann, as well as her "sand over stone" world, Eco. But it's also symbolic, because although Ann isn't really alone, she often feels isolated on her frontier planet. The addition of the image of the Earth is also appropriately symbolic. Ann can't actually see the Earth from Eco, but since her goal is to live on Earth it's always on her mind, so the inclusion of the Earth image is a wonderful metaphor for her hopes and dreams.

For a ticket to Earth, seventeen-year-old Anna-Maria “Ann” Solano is willing to jettison her birth planet, best friend, and the boy who loves her. Especially since all she’s required to do is escort Dace Keeling, a young naturalist, through the wilderness of the partially terraformed planet Eco. Ann‘s determination to escape the limitations of her small, frontier colony never falters, until Dace’s expeditions uncover three secrets. One offers riches, one shatters Ann’s perceptions of herself, and one reveals that the humans stranded on Eco are not its only inhabitants.
Ann’s willing to sacrifice friendship and love for a new life on Earth. But when an entire species is placed in jeopardy by her actions, she must make a choice – fulfill the dream that’s always sustained her, or save the planet she’s never considered home.

Brooke Harris
(Modi #2)
Publication date: December 4th 2015
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

I like fast cars, beautiful women and great sex.

I hate drugs. I can’t stand the idiots who take them and I loathe the bastards who supply them. Drugs cost me my whole world.
I wear many faces; right now I’m Doctor Lucas Callaghan and I’ll be him until I get my revenge.
My real name will be the last words to ever pass their lips.

I hate my name, Aoife Brennan, as soon as people hear it they treat me differently because of my father.

Medical school isn’t my dream, it’s his. But, it’s the least I owe him after everything I’ve done. I’m trying to be a good girl, but even good girls make mistakes.
He’s lying about who he is, she’s kidding herself about who she can be. They’re polar opposites with one very big secret in common.
EXCERPT:
I follow him to the front door. We both stand in the hall for longer than necessary. I don’t offer to let him out, even though I know I should. But I want him to kiss me again. I want so much more than I know I can have.
He reaches for the doorknob. He’s going to let himself out. God, I don’t want him to go. Not like this.
‘I’m sorry,’ I say, finally breaking the silence.
‘For what?’
‘I shouldn’t have kissed you.’
‘And I shouldn’t have kissed you back.’
He’s smiling. And for the first time since we met, the cloud of sadness that usually rests in the corner of his eyes is absent.
‘Are we okay, then?’ I stutter.
‘You mean am I going to tell anyone about this?’
‘Well, yeah?’
‘No, Aoife. No, I’m not. I’m as much to blame as you are. Probably more so because I should know better.’
‘I’m not a child, Lucas. I do understand the word no.’
He looks at me as if he wants to rip my clothes off. I kind of wish he would. I take a deep breath.
‘If you kissed me again, I wouldn’t say no this time either,’ I say.
My teeth clamp against my bottom lip. I can’t believe I said that out loud. But all I can think about is how good his lips felt on mine and how much I want to feel them again. Kiss me, Lucas. Kiss me.
As if he reads my mind, Lucas’ hands grip my waist. One hand just above each hip, cementing me to the spot. His eyes focus on mine with such intensity, it burns.
‘You should say no, Aoife. You should run a mile from me.’
‘Why? Because you loved someone and losing them has fucked with your head?’
His eyes narrow, and his grip on my waist tightens almost to the point of hurting. I know it’s a flash of temper. This man is the nearest thing to a stranger to me. He could lose it completely and really hurt me, but I know he won’t. I trust him as I’ve never really trusted anyone before.
‘No. Because you don’t know me. You don’t know what I’m capable of.’
‘Then show me.’
‘Be careful what you wish for.’
‘I’ve already seen what you’re capable of. I’ve seen how much you care about people, but you try to hide that under a layer of fancy talk and cocky attitude.’
He forces me backwards, his hands still on my waist. I make a weird noise that I haven’t heard before as my back collides with the wall behind me, slapping the air out of my chest.
‘Don’t go there, Doctor Brennan. You’re not a psychology student.’
‘No. I’m just the girl you kissed. The girl who is still standing in front of you ten minutes later and waiting for you to do it again.’

#DustOffYourBookshelf #36

#DustOffYourBookshelf #36

Dust off your Bookshelf was originally created to share books that have been on my “to read pile” for a long time. Some so long I’ve forgotten that they are there, and have purchased duplicate copies. Each week I will share on my blog as well as Instagram a new title. Some may be newer and some so old I have forgotten they are there. I do have issues with buying books and never reading them. I’m hoping that by share them I will be motivated to read them. Plus it’s always fun to find new books hiding within the bookshelves. Feel free to join in and share on Instagram or your blog. Just let me know so I can check out your choice this week too. Just use #DustOffYourBookshelf

This week's book is one that has been sitting on my bookshelf for a year and I even have the second one too. I tried multiple times to get my bookclub to be motivated to read it but so far nothing. I keep hoping but at this rate I won't have read it before the movie. I'm hoping to get to it this month.

My book this week

Who have scattered Earth's last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie's only hope for rescuing her brother--or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.

In the city that never sleeps the Chronicles continue…
Serving coffee is temporary, just like Casey's year off from school. She’s going to come up with a plan to stay in New York City and go back to college, and that plan does not involve dating a paranormal creature—let alone two. Running the supernatural society of New York is not as fun as it sounds, especially when you still have to answer to your ex-girlfriend’s fiancé. Toby doesn’t mean to bring Casey into the chaos of his life, but he can't resist the girl who makes him smile when he thought no one else ever could. Jared's in New York checking out a security risk for his best friend, the king. He plans to return to New Orleans quickly, but not if it means losing his chance with the brunette who pretends she wants nothing to do with him. In over her head with a bunch of winged creatures who most definitely are not angels, Casey has to figure out who to trust with her life and maybe her heart.

The Emissary
For hundreds of years, dark clouds covered the skies of Adamah, and an ageless king ruled. Those who emerged with one of six extraordinary Shay powers were forced into the king's army, an unmatched force with inhuman Strength, Speed, Accuracy, Perception, Empathy, and Healing. With the army at his side, the king—a man who wields all six abilities—was invincible and unquestioned in his rule. To most, serving the king was an honor. And for some, it was a fate worse than death.
When seventeen-year-old Nolan Trividar witnesses the transformation of his brother from kind to cruel after entering the king’s army, he vows never to follow the same path. So when his own power—the Shay of Accuracy—comes upon him at the Tournament of Awakening, Nolan conceals his emergence instead of joining the king’s ranks. For years, he traitorously hides his power, pretending to be a gifted scribe. But when Nolan comes face-to-face with a deserter, the man discovers his secret. To evade detection and a death sentence, Nolan escapes with the deserter and flees into a night filled with dark creatures who steal both powers and souls.
Nolan joins a resistance, a village hidden deep in the forest, filled with others who secretly wield a Shay. But his peace is short lived when they discover that the dark clouds, the undead creatures, their own decreasing powers, and even the king, are all connected.
