Review: Burning Bright

Title - Burning Bright

Series - Ivy Granger #3
Genre - Urban Fantasy

Publisher - Sacred Oaks Press

Synopsis

Burning down the house...

Things are not going well at the offices of Private Eye. Jinx is having demon problems, the city is overrun with pyromaniacal imps, and Ivy's wisp powers are burning out of control, attracting the attention of both the Seelie and Unseelie courts.

Along came a faerie queen... It's the worst possible time for the Green Lady to call in a favor, but Ivy's bound by her deal with the glaistig. Too bad there's no wiggle room in faerie bargains.

Ivy must rid the city of imps, keep Jinx from murdering her one solid link to Hell, and fulfill her bargain with the Green Lady--with sidhe assassins hot on her tail.

Just another day's work for Ivy Granger, psychic detective.

Opening Line
Ever play whack-a-mole with a jincan?  No?  Well, then aren’t you the fortunate one.  Not only do jincan look like overgrown caterpillars with pointy teeth, but they also breed like bunnies and have a knack for undermining integral weight-bearing structures, leaving piles of rubble in their wake.  Oh, and they smell like rotten eggs when squished—just my luck.

Review
I received Burning Bright in return for an honest review from the author.

Burning Bright is the third installment in the Ivy Granger Series. Ivy is a private investigator but she’s been doing less investigating and more hunting since Jenna was shipped off to the old country. When she finds her best friend covered in kisses and drained she rushes to Kaye the most powerful witch in Harborsmouth who puts Jinx in a circle to keep the incubus from draining more of her. With the help of her friends Ivy heads off to the carnival where the green lady lives knowing that she’s the one who attacked Jinx only to learn that she’s calling in her favor. The Green lady wants Ivy to kill her friend Kaye or else Jinx will die.

As if that’s the only problem that Ivy has to worry about, fire imps are on the loose starting fires all over the city. The vampires want Ivy to stop the imps, as do the cat Sidhe before it gets out of hand. Plus Ivy needs to figure out how to settle her debt with the green lady without killing her friend.  She also needs to avoid the faerie court assassins who are hot on her trail intent on killing her before she can expose them all. Ivy has her hands full will she be able to survive or will her death be the only solution?

I love Ivy she’s been one of my favorite characters since the beginning. Very much like a fine wine keeps getting better with age. Ivy’s life is anything but normal she lives in a world where she sees the monsters unlike her best friend who doesn’t. She is trying to find her father which is far from easy as well as needs to learn how to use her gifts. I also love her friends from human to demon she has a wide range which I think enhance the story perfectly. Plus than there is her love interest Ceff the Kelpie King who I just love he’s perfect for Ivy.

I was super excited to get the opportunity to read the next installment in Ivy Granger’s story. She is one of my favorite Urban Fantasy characters right along with Mercy Thompson they are my top two. Ivy’s lives in a world where supernatural beings exist but humans don’t know that they are real. I love the way the author has taken the private investigator concept and put her own unique twist creating a captivating new series. The whole book is beautifully written from start to finish I was drawn in right from the start unable to put the book down till the last page. Burning Bright is action packed right from the start mixing suspense and romance to create a complex story. I love that the book is mostly story with just little bits of romance that don’t overpower the story I feel like I get the best of both worlds. I loved the story, the book was amazing one of my favorites in the series. I can’t wait for the next installment of Ivy because I just have to know what’s going to happen next.
5 out of 5 stars

Synopsis
Eight years ago, Luke Retter witnessed the brutal murder of his mother and sister at the hands of his demon-possessed father. He survived but lost a hand and an eye. The demon also burned its emblem into his skin, marking him as a cursed. Those who bear this mark are at risk of becoming possessed themselves, so they are monitored and enslaved by the state-run UCIS. Working as a slave is hard, but Luke prefers it to the possibility of being controlled by a demon.

One night, Luke wakes to find his worst nightmare coming true. His father’s demon has returned. In a panic, he runs to the only person who might be able to help: Zack, a cursed who ran away from the state and created an underground community to protect other fugitive curseds. Zack helps him suppress the demon. But the city’s become a time bomb, and Luke’s demon itches to escape.

With the UCIS closing in on Zack’s underground operation and Luke’s demon crafting its own, nefarious plot, Luke realizes that he must take a stand.

Guest Post
When I was little, my aunt bought me a hardback copy of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales. They aren’t the cute, clean ones we see in Disney movies. They’re dark…twisted…sometimes even a little perverse. I remember being very surprised to read the sadistic punishment that Cinderella and her new hubby had in mind for the evil stepmother. Then there were other stories that I hadn’t seen watered-down versions of in movies and TV shows. “The Little Brother and Sister” was one of my favorites. In this story, a brother and sister escape their abusive stepmother, who is also a witch. The brother ends up being turned into a faun by a magical spring, and a man hunting him turns out to be a prince. The prince meets the sister, they marry, and they all live happily ever after, right? Wrong. The sister marries the prince and has a baby, but the stepmother murders her and has her other, disfigured daughter pose as the queen.

As a kid, that blew my mind. It was insane and unlike the sorts of fairy tales I’d previously been exposed to. But another story fascinated me even more. It was called “The Handless Maiden.” In this story, a demon talks a miller into cutting off his daughter’s hands. She ends up alone and wandering through the wilderness, where she runs into her Prince Charming. Again, this is not a happily ever after moment. Rather, after she gives birth to their child, her husband goes off to war. Meanwhile, the demon intercepts letters between the husband and his mother, trying to convince the mother to kill the queen and the baby. Ah! They end up having to flee the castle, and the king has to set out into the wilderness to find them. Of all the fairy tales, this one fascinated me the most, because it was one of the few that represented a physically flawed princess.

About a year ago, I decided I wanted to do a modernized retelling of “The Handless Maiden.” I liked the idea of a physically imperfect character—one that had to survive despite their handicap. I created the character of Luke in Hideous, who only has one eye and one hand, injuries he sustained when his father was possessed by a demon. I also wanted demons to exist in this story the way they exist in fairy tales. In “The Handless Maiden,” demons aren’t discussed as some bizarre anomaly, but rather something that is a known and common threat in the world. In Hideous, demons are a rampant problem in the world. They’re almost viewed as an epidemic. Those who are possessed are even referred to as “infected.”

Hideous tells the story of a sixteen-year-old boy trying to survive this sort of world. Not only does he have his physical handicap, but he also was scarred with a mark from his demon. Those who bear this mark are referred to as “cursed,” and they are more likely to be possessed than most. However, monitoring curseds discourages demons from possessing them, so the government enslaves curseds and forces them to work in low paying jobs. Luke has worked for the state since he was eight, and now he works at an all-boys high school, where he has to watch all the other kids enjoying life, going about as if there isn’t this global demonic threat. Luke just wants to blend in. He plays by the rules, because he doesn’t want to end up in jail, which is
where noncompliant curseds are likely to end up. His desperate attempt to follow the rules falls apart when the demon that possessed his father returns to possess him...

This is the story behind my new young adult novel, available through Harmony Ink Press. If you get a chance, head over to Amazon or my publisher’s site and pick up your copy today.

Devon McCormack spends most of his time hiding in his lair, adventuring in paranormal worlds with his island of misfit characters. A good ole Southern boy, McCormack grew up in the Georgian suburbs with his two younger brothers and an older sister. At a very young age, he spun tales the old fashioned way, lying to anyone and everyone he encountered. He claimed he was an orphan. He claimed to be a king from another planet. He claimed to have supernatural powers. He has since harnessed this penchant for tall tales by crafting whole worlds where he can live out whatever fantasy he chooses.

A gay man himself, McCormack focuses on gay male characters, adding to the immense body of literature that chooses to represent and advocate gay men's presence in media. Blitz: Guardians - The Girl

Title - Guardians: The Girl
Author - Lola St. Vil
Publication date - January 9th 2012
Genre - Fantasy, Romance, Young Adult

Synopsis
Sitting there in the car, a part of me bitterly resented what she was doing to me. I knew it wasn’t her fault. But does she have to be so… alluring? I need to focus on something else besides the spot between her earlobe and neck. It looked so soft. Her lips were slightly parted as she looked out the window. I wanted to part them further with mine. I put both my hands on the steering wheel. I could not allow myself to let go until she was out of the car. Suddenly she leaned in and kissed me. It was far better than I could even begin to explain to you. I’ve fought and died a slow and painful death on earth. And nothing, NOTHING can compare to how hard it was for me to pull away from her lips. I don’t think any angel could to do it twice in a lifetime…

 Excerpt
She doesn’t move and inch. I sigh and get down on the floor beside her.
“Emmy, I miss you.”
“What?” she asks in a weak voice that cracks as she speaks.
“I miss you.”
“Why?”
“Since I met you I have been unable to count in days. I can only count your eyes. How long until I see your eyes again? That’s the only clock I have in my head.”
“You are just using my feelings for you so I can help you save the world. Screw you. Screw the world,” she says flatly.
“My interest in you is a thousand times more than what it should be. How could you not know that I am in love with you? Everyone else does.”
“I’m just a stupid human you have to pretend to be interested in. Get out.” She puts her head down.
“You blow on your ice cream before you eat it. When you watch horror movies and the scary parts come up, you close your cat’s eyes along with yours. You have a picture you took of me on your cell and don’t think I know about.”
“So, what’s the point, Marcus? What’s the point of any of this?”
“I was gonna ask you to face the world because I love you. And you love me. But how can I ask you to do that when I have a girl and can’t be with you?”
She looks at me. She has no response. There was nothing she could have said that the two of us didn’t already know. I take her hands. She had started crying. I wipe her tears away with my hand.
“I can’t save the world, Marcus. I’m not strong enough.”
“You can’t save the world, you don’t know the world. So you have to focus and narrow it down to the people you do know—your mom, your uncle, your neighbors. You have to fight for the people that you love. You. Have. To. Fight.”

My Dusty Bookshelf

My Dusty Bookshelf
I've got an addiction for adding books to my bookshelf but never getting around to them. I'm sure I'm not the only one either. It's just so easy with all the new books to forget about the older ones. I'd like to start reading some of the books I've had for years and just haven't read. I thought this would be a good way to share and rekindle some interest in my dusty books. Plus I love giving books a little extra spotlight when I can.

One of the first books I picked up when I got my kindle. I still haven't read it yet. I hope too.

Kushiel's Scion
by Jacqueline Carey
(Goodreads)

Synopsis

It is whispered that Kushiel's lineage carries the ability to perceive the flaws in mortal souls, to administer an untender mercy. I sense its presence like a shadow on my soul...the memories of blood and branding and horror, and the legacy of cruelty that runs in my veins, shaping my own secret vow and wielding it like a brand against the darkness, whispering it to myself, over and over.
I will try to be good.

Imriel de la Courcel's blood parents are history's most reviled traitors, but his adoptive parents, the Comtesse Phedre and the warrior-priest Joscelin, are Terre d'Ange's greatest champions. Stolen, tortured, and enslaved as a young boy, Imriel is now a Prince of the Blood, third in line for the throne in a land that revels in art, beauty, and desire. It is a court steeped in deeply laid conspiracies...and there are many who would see the young prince dead. Some despise him out of hatred for his birth mother Melisande, who nearly destroyed the realm in her quest for power. Others because they fear he has inherited his mother's irresistible allure - and her dangerous gifts. And as he comes of age, plagued by dark yearnings, Imriel shares their fears.

At the royal court, where gossip is the chosen poison and assailants wield slander instead of swords, the young prince fights character assassins while struggling with his own innermost conflicts. But when Imriel departs to study at the fames University of Tiberium, the perils he faces turn infinitely more deadly.

Searching for wisdom, he finds instead a web of manipulation, where innocent words hide sinister meanings, and your lover of last night may become your hired killer before dawn. Now a simple act of friendship will leave Imriel trapped in a besieged city where the infamous Melisande is worshiped as a goddess; where a dead man leads an army; and where the prince must face his greatest test: to find his true self.

What's on your dusty bookshelf? Do you have books that have been there for years? I do. I can't wait to see what you have to share this week. Be sure to leave a comment with a link so I can check yours out. Happy Reading!!!

Picking out what to read has always been a struggle for me. I've got lots of review books and even more non-review books.

My Choice's for what's next:

I seem to struggle recently when it comes to picking books. I have lots of books to read just not captivated by any of them. A little book burn out plus with my hubby home I'm not getting as much time to read as I would like. This week I've decided to go with one or more of the kindle freebies I've picked up. Just a FYI these may not be free at this time. I've had some of them for years. As you may also notice I had a shapeshifter craving.

Spellbound by Kodilynn Calhoun (Goodreads)

Wylde Debraux is 16: Sassy, fiercely independent—and the Wyvern princess of the desert tribe of Kiir’vanan. When her father demands she choose a suitor within a fortnight to become her mate, Wylde rebels…and finds herself face to face with her enemies.

Born without power, Kascien Trump is a slave to the Magi. He’s as trapped as the bio-engineered dragonhounds he breeds and fights for his master. Then Wylde blazes into his life, offering him the possibility of freedom, and he knows she’s probably his only ticket out of there. Alive, anyway.

But when Wylde’s captured, the spellbound slave and the fiery dragon-shifter have to put aside their differences and work together to outwit the Magi and escape the clutches of Kascien’s corrupt master…or lost themselves trying.

Firefly Hollow by T.L. Haddix (Goodreads)

In 1960, a tragic death in the family calls young Sarah Browning back from college to her Appalachian homestead. Unable to return to school and finish her degree, she finds herself facing a future that isn’t what she’d planned. Lost and grieving, she wanders onto her reclusive neighbor’s property where she stumbles across the all-too-attractive Owen Campbell, a man hiding secrets she’d only ever thought were legend.

Owen Campbell was raised on the folklore of Eastern Kentucky, tales of men and women with magical abilities from shape-shifting to healing powers. Rejected by those he loves because of his own abilities, he isolates himself from the world. When he meets Sarah, he’s faced with the tough decision of whether to let her in or stay hidden away to keep his heart safe.

Firefly Hollow is the first book in the "Firefly Hollow" series. Other titles include Butterfly Lane, Dragonfly Creek, Cattail Ridge, and Cricket Cove. Also by this author: the Shadows/Leroy Collection, a series of standalone Romantic Suspense novels. Titles include Secrets in the Shadows, Under the Moon's Shadow, Shadows from the Grave, Hidden in the Shadows, and In the Heart's Shadow.

Change by Melissa Stevens (Goodreads)

A sudden life threatening injury turns Nickie’s world on its ear, but not in a way she ever would have predicted. Nickie finds out that not only do shape-shifters exist, but she is one. The Kitsune are a race of shape-shifters that have been living in secret alongside humans for centuries. As Nickie struggles to master her newly discovered shape-shifting and the abilities it brings her, she learns that some of the people in her life are far more than she knew. Can Nickie handle all the changes headed her way on her own? Or does she have someone who can help her?

Godhunter by Amy Sumida (Goodreads)

There are some things that really annoy Vervain Lavine. Like when people call her Vivian; “Vervain's an herb, look it up.” Or when people don't get her movie quotes; “Why doesn't anyone appreciate culture anymore?” But what really bothers her, what gets her little witchy panties in a twist, is when gods manipulate humans. “They're not even really gods, just Atlanteans playing dress up!”

Yeah, that's right, the gods are Atlanteans. Basically a bunch of refugees who decided to take over. It was a sweet deal for them, at least back when we believed in them and all. Not so much anymore. Nowadays, there ain't too many folks lining up at the altars to give their offerings, and gods are suffering for it. Without our sacrifices, the gods don't have enough juice to keep living in the manner to which they've grown accustomed.
So they came up with a plan. It was so easy actually. All they had to do was get us to fight amongst ourselves, go to war. When our kind die, they suck up the energy like a temperature-resistant fat man drinking a milkshake line-up. Not such a bad idea, and it's worked for quite awhile. Up until Vervain found out.

Now, don't get the wrong idea. Vervain's no Laura Croft. She can't bench press 200 lbs or shoot laser beams out of her eyes either. She does have magic on her side though and a few little tricks up her sleeve, or up her gloves rather. So she's not completely defenseless and she'll do whatever she has to in order to end this threat of divine proportions. Even if it means assassinating one god at a time.

Her greatest annoyance is yet to come though, in the form of a gorgeous Viking God who swears he's on her side. If she can keep her eyes off his leather pants long enough, they might even stand half a chance.

The Grim: Midnight Squad by J.L.M. Visada (Goodreads)

Sergeant Joseph Reaper has fought all around the world, but when his last mission ends in tragedy he returns to America a broken man. He is so mentally, and spiritually damaged that he is sent to a mental institution where they treat all his statements about Jinn's and magical torture as the ravings of a madman. After being told all that all his suffering was a lie Joseph finally escaped and has been in hiding since.

When they finally find him, the military needs him to build a new team. This team is unlike any he's ever led. A group of strong willed supernatural women will challenge Joseph in ways he's never experienced, or expected. These five powerful women will force him to reexamine himself, and what he's always believed. Leading a beautiful Scottish vampire, a gothic witch, a sensitive lesbian werewolf, and the ghost of an excommunicated nun would be a lot to ask any soldier, but they may be asking too much when Joseph is asked to lead the very same Djinn that tortured him and his team for three months. Joseph is determined to give his best.

He's trying to pull the team together, but there are complications. He keeps finding himself distracted by Penny despite all the danger that might come with having a relationship with the vampire. Also, when Alhambra tells him that he's in danger Sergeant Reaper can't decide if it's just another attempt by the Jinn to mess with his head, or if there is a larger conspiracy. Either way Joseph is going to do everything he can to protect his team even if it kills him, and it just might.

So many choices this week which would you choose? I'm stuck.
