Throwback Thursday!

Throwback Thursday October 4th 2012

Throwback Thursday is a weekly meme hosted by The Housework Can Wait and Never to fond of Books.

It's the nature of book blogging to focus mainly on new releases, but there are thousands of great books out there that haven't seen the "New Releases" shelf in years. We hope to be able to bring attention to some older titles that may or not be at the top of the current bestseller list, but still deserve a spot in your To-Be-Read pile.

You don't have to be a book blogger to participate! You can put up a Throwback Thursday post on your non-bookish blog; or if you don't have a blog at all you can use the comments to tell us about a book your remember fondly.

My Throwback for the week:

Naked in Death
by J.D. Robb
Published July 1995
Mystery
(Goodreads)
Synopsis

In hardcover for the first time, here is the novel that started it all-the first book in J. D. Robb's number-one New York Times-bestselling In Death series, featuring New York City homicide detective Lieutenant Eve Dallas and Roarke.

It is the year 2058, and technology now completely rules the world. But New York City Detective Eve Dallas knows that the irresistible impulses of the human heart are still ruled by just one thing-passion.

When a senator's daughter is killed, the secret life of prostitution she'd been leading is revealed. The high-profile case takes Lieutenant Eve Dallas into the rarefied circles of Washing-ton politics and society. Further complicating matters is Eve's growing attraction to Roarke, who is one of the wealthiest and most influential men on the planet, devilishly handsome... and the leading suspect in the investigation.

Review

I read the first Eve Dallas book "Naked In Death" years ago and I was a instant fan. She's a homicide detective in the series who is the kind of person that will do everything to find the killer. It reminded me a little of Bladerunner with the futuristic aspects in the book, however most books in the future with all kinds of technology remind me of Bladerunner. Eve is working on the case of a senator's daughter who is murdered and her secret life is discovered. Through out the book Eve suspects Roarke of the murder as well as develops  feelings for him. It's a fast paced suspense thriller that draws you in till the end and your left wanting to read the next one. I've only read the first couple but I want to when I get time to read them all.

Review: Hemlock

Title - Hemlock
Author - Kathleen Peacock
Genre - Young Adult Werewolves
Series of Standalone - Book 1 in the Hemlock Series.
Published May 8th 2012
(Goodreads) & (Amazon)

Synopsis

Mackenzie and Amy were best friends. Until Amy was brutally murdered.

Since then, Mac's life has been turned upside down. She is being haunted by Amy in her dreams, and an extremist group called the Trackers has come to Mac's hometown of Hemlock to hunt down Amy's killer:

A white werewolf.

Lupine syndrome--also known as the werewolf virus--is on the rise across the country. Many of the infected try to hide their symptoms, but blood lust is not easy to control.

Wanting desperately to put an end to her nightmares, Mac decides to investigate Amy's murder herself. She discovers secrets lurking in the shadows of Hemlock, secrets about Amy's boyfriend, Jason, her good pal Kyle, and especially her late best friend. Mac is thrown into a maelstrom of violence and betrayal that puts her life at risk.

Kathleen Peacock's thrilling novel is the first in the Hemlock trilogy, a spellbinding urban fantasy series filled with provocative questions about prejudice, trust, lies, and love.

Review

Mackenzie grew up in Hemlock with her best friend Amy. Life was anything but easy with the increase in cases of Lupine Syndrome the werewolf virus. Mackenzie's best friend is murdered by a werewolf yet her kill runs free. A team of Trackers comes to town to find the werewolf who killed Amy. The Trackers take those away and lock them in a caged facility for the rest of their lives if they have Lupine syndrome because they are unpredictable and it's not safe for the humans.

Mackenzie is haunted by Amy she sees her in her dreams so she decides the best thing to do is find Amy's killer to put the dreams to rest. Mackenzie learns a lot more than she ever expected on her quest to find her best friends killer. That the people she thought she knew aren't who she thought they were. The more she and her friends uncover about Amy the more twisted it gets, testing all of them to the brink. She will need to learn who she can trust, as well as do what it takes to protect those she loves even if it isn’t the best choice.

I loved Hemlock, but I am a huge shape shifter fan so maybe I'm a little biased. Hemlock takes an interesting twist instead of being a deep dark secret the werewolves are ousted by the government creating a unique story. I found Hemlock captivating it sucked me in right from the start and I didn't want to put it down. I love all the action and mystery woven into the book it creates a great story very intense yet with a lot of feeling. Mackenzie is such a great character she grows so much in the first book, the more she learns about the werewolves and the truth about Amy's murder. The book is well written it gives you everything you need, a great ending but gives you enough you want the next book.  Overall one of the better werewolf books I've read but it's not like your typical werewolf book so it stands alone.

Waiting On Wednesday!

Waiting on Wednesday October 2nd 2012

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating. In my case not so patiently waiting for the new releases, which I lack.

This week I decided to go with a book I think I saw last week that sounds awesome. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on it when it comes out.

The Rules by Stacey Kade
Genre - Young Adult
Expected Publication - April 23rd 2013
(Goodreads)

Synopsis

1. Never trust anyone.

2. Remember they are always searching.

3. Don’t get involved.

4. Keep your head down.

5. Don’t fall in love.

Five simple rules. Ariane Tucker has followed them since the night she escaped from the genetics lab where she was created, the result of combining human and extraterrestrial DNA. Ariane’s survival—and that of her adoptive father—depends on her ability to blend in among the full-blooded humans in a small Wisconsin town, to hide in plain sight at her high school from those who seek to recover their lost (and expensive) “project.”

But when a cruel prank at school goes awry, it puts her in the path of Zane Bradshaw, the police chief’s son and someone who sees too much. Someone who really sees her. After years of trying to be invisible, Ariane finds the attention frightening—and utterly intoxicating. Suddenly, nothing is simple anymore, especially not the rules…

Interview: Samantha Durante

Interview: Samantha Durante

Today I'm super happy to have a interview with Samantha Durante the author of Stitch her exciting new series. Check out my review (here).

Mandy - Where do you get your inspiration?
Samantha - From reading!  I’ve been an avid reader my whole life and I love love love immersive sci-fi/fantasy series with a big dollop of romance, so I always knew that when I decided to write my own book, it would be up that alley.  And when it came time to come up with the idea Stitch, I just thought, “What story would I like to read which I haven’t been able to find?”

Mandy - Where did you get the idea for Stitch?
Samantha - I really wanted to do something different for Stitch, but I was having trouble coming up with anything that was totally fresh and new.  So as I thought about how to make Stitch unique, it occurred to me that I’d read very few books which really stretched across genres.  All the dystopian I’d read was firmly dystopian, and all the paranormal romance books I’d read were firmly paranormal, but I really love to read both genres, so I set out to try to combine the two in one book!  And I love a good twist, so I ended up using the dystopian elements to explain how the “paranormal” stuff was working, which I thought was a neat and different approach and something I hadn’t seen before.  I wasn’t sure if other readers would be receptive, but so far people seem to be appreciating it!

Mandy - What kind of atmosphere do you prefer when you write?
Samantha - I’m pretty good at tuning out what’s going on around me (just ask my family – it’s their biggest pet peeve!) so I can write wherever, if I need to.  But I’m definitely most productive and most comfortable writing somewhere quiet, and preferably somewhere soft and cushy (like my couch or bed), with my laptop on my lap and as few distractions as possible.  When I’ve got that environment, I’m able to get in the zone and really let the words flow.

Mandy - What kind of books do you enjoy reading? Which ones are your favorites?
Samantha - I really love anything with a little romance and a lot of imagination.  I’m definitely partial to sci-fi/fantasy books, and particularly long, epic series where I can just lose myself for days/weeks at a time (think Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Twilight, Eragon, etc.).  Historical fiction often achieves the same effect for me (Pride & Prejudice takes the cake there!), as does a good mystery (especially if it involves ghosts of some sort or other eerie elements).  But I also love a good contemporary novel (YA or adult), as long as it has a dash of romance.  I’m not too picky of a reader, but I do always find myself coming back to science fiction and fantasy, and I’m so thrilled that there are so many great new YA SFF series out there right now (Divergent, Delirium, Maze Runner, Linger, etc.) – I’m just in heaven!

Mandy -Did you always know you wanted to be a writer?
Samantha - Nope!  I actually spent most of my life thinking I wanted to be an engineer and business person.  I always loved writing for fun, but I didn’t think I could make a career out of it (or at least not a lucrative one – I always had that “struggling artist” image in my head, which the practical side of me did not find romantic in the least!).  But after getting my engineering and business degrees and working in software for a few years, I just realized something was missing for me, and that was writing.  So I took a chance on starting my own business as a freelance business writer (working with small businesses on marketing materials, websites, blogs, etc.), and I was pleasantly surprised to find that I could indeed make a living doing writing.  Which then enabled me to go after my true passion, which is fiction writing.  Stitch is my first (public) attempt at that, and so far it’s going great!

Mandy - Who is your favorite Muppet?
Samantha - Oh wow, this is a tough one – I watched SO many episodes of Muppet Babies and The Muppet Show on Nickelodeon as a kid!  I think I have to go with the Swedish Chef.  His sketches are just so absurd; they always manage to get a laugh out of me.

Mandy - Favorite beverage? Do you drink it daily?
Samantha - Diet Coke!  And yes, I generally drink it daily, but I’ve cut back to one a day, since I’m worried we’re going to realize one day that soda gives you cancer…

Mandy - Biggest pet peeve?
Samantha - Smoking, no doubt.  It’s been illegal to smoke in restaurants and most public places in NY for most of my life, so I just cannot take it when I go somewhere else and can’t get away from cigarette smoke.  I get a headache almost immediately and can’t breathe, and just feel like I am slowly dying.  It’s horrible – I will never understand why anyone would do that to themselves, or at the very least not realize why it’s completely inconsiderate to object the people around you to it!  Ugh, smoking is the worst!

Mandy - What is your guilty pleasure?
Samantha - The Bachelorette!  I really don’t watch almost any other reality TV, but for some reason, I always find myself really looking forward to this on Monday nights.  And it’s two full hours!  Amazing.  It’s so embarrassing, but I just can’t get enough.

Mandy - What are 5 items you never leave home without.
Samantha - The first few things are boring – cell phone, wallet, keys (the usual).  I also now always carry Benadryl, since I’ve recently developed some kind of erratic food allergy (to most beans, possibly all legumes, but it’s not consistent) which I am constantly forgetting about, since I love beans and always eat them without thinking!  I also never leave home without my Palmer’s Cocoa Butter stick, which is the absolute best chapstick I’ve found – it leaves just a hint of yummy cocoa flavor on your lips, but it doesn’t taste like anything if you actually eat it, so there’s no incentive to continually lick it off your lips and reapply like with most lip balms.  The only problem is that it looks like a glue stick, so I get a lot of weird looks on the subway, haha.

Mandy - What scares you?
Samantha - Ooohh good one…  First, the obvious things: any of my loved ones getting hurt/sick (especially my cat), the possibility of dying young, and of course, snakes.  But there are definitely new ones I’ve discovered recently… For example, reviews!  Each time I read a new review, I find myself getting really apprehensive just for a moment.  In general the reviews of Stitch have been very positive, but I think I’m much more harsh on my book than anyone else has been yet, and I just keep waiting for someone to really rip it apart.  But hopefully by the time the scathing reviews (which are inevitable on the internet) make an appearance, I’ll have enough good ones amassed to outweigh them!

Mandy - Anything you want to say to your readers?
Samantha - THANK YOU for reading!  I really can’t say it enough.  I’m SO excited to share this story (and hopefully many more to come) with readers, and every time I hear that someone enjoyed Stitch, it just totally makes my day.  If you liked Stitch, please do let me know in a review (or an email!) and tell your friends!  And thanks so much to Mandy for hosting the Stitch Blog Tour today!

Thank you so much Samantha it's been a absolute pleasure.

Opening Teaser

She woke to the sound of heavy boot steps marching down the hall and the familiar pang in her hip bones wrought from to many nights on a rigid metal cot. The back of her throat ached from the icy air that'd ravaged her lungs all night; she could almost see her breath as she let out a weary sigh, resigned to another day in this hell.

Review

Alessa is attending her freshman year in college not her first pick of schools but one that would accept her after her senior year wasn't so amazing. It was during her senior year just after her eighteenth birthday that her parents died in a car wreak and she was given the choice to live the rest of the year on her own. She was really depressed her grades went down and even trying to dig her way out of the end of the year didn't help. She was offered a chance at ESU which she took, they even let her pick a sorority her first year so she didn't have to live in student housing.

Alessa isn't the social butterfly like her sorority girls, but she does have a best friend Janie the other freshman in the house. Everything it starting to look better for Alessa until she starts to see brief images of a man in her room, and around the house. At first she's a little scared at seeing a ghost but the more she see's him the more she is intreaged by who this stranger is. She sets out to find out who he is by checking out old records of the house at the school library. Alessa figures out who he is a 17 year old boy from the 1900's who had died in a fire, and sets out to tell to try to save him.

This book is wow. You instantly connect with Alessa she comes off as your typical college girl, she's dealing with the loss of her parents and typical college stress. She's a strong woman who knows what she wants and does what it takes. The characters are well written I had a good idea of each one, and felt like I was their with them. The story sucks you in to the point where you can't put it down you just have to know what's lurking behind the walls of the university. When I found out what was really going on it shocked me it never crossed my mind so I loved the twist the book too. I really enjoyed Stitch I can't wait to get my hands on the next one. I want to know more about the real world that Alessa lives in.
