DETAILS/RULES:

1. The goal is to read 150 or more books. Anyone can join. You don't need a blog to participate. Posting on GoodReads or wherever you post your reviews is good enough.

2. Allowed are: Audio, Re-reads, eBooks, YA, Manga, Graphic Novels, Library books, Novellas, Young Reader, Nonfiction – as long as the book has an ISBN or equivalent or can be purchased as such, the book counts.

What doesn't count: Individual short stories or individual books in the Bible and comic books.

3. No need to list your books in advance. You may select books as you go. Even if you list them now, you can change the list if needed.

4. Crossovers from other reading challenges count.

5. Challenge begins January 1st, 2013 thru December 31, 2013. Books started before the 1st do not count. You can join at anytime.

Review

I received Sparks as part of the blog tour hosted by Bewitching Book Tours in return for an honest review. Anya's days are divided between working as a arson investigator and dealing with out of control spirits. She's not alone in her adventure she's joined by her elemental familiar Sparky who happens to be a salamander plus her ghost hunting group. Anya isn't your typical Detroit girl she's a lantern which means that she can communicate with ghosts as well as she has the gift to eat them ending there existence. However life hasn't been easy with the accident that killed her mother, and being afraid to let anyone close she's had a hard time.

Anya has a new arson case that she's working on which involves spontaneous human combustion leaving very little remains behind. Jasper Bernard was a dealer is magic stuff from swords to bottles with bones in them, and when his all the magical artifacts go missing after his death Anya has more then just a case to solve. Hope Solomon is a celebrity psychic is in town collecting spirits for her own twisted plans. Anya is also trying to keep her relationship with Brian because after the scare in the first book when she almost lost him she's not ready to lose the chance again. Plus Sparkys has new babies thrown into the mix Anya has her hands full just keeping it together.

I really love Anya as a character she's grown so much from Ember and to me she just keeps getting better with age. This is only my second book about ghost but the concept for Anya's character being a lantern I find really unique. Plus she's in not your typical investigator she works for the fire department which is also new for me but I really like seeing a new form of investigator. As with the first book I love Sparky I want my own Sparky that's just like hers. The supernatural world that is created in the book works really well for the series, incorporating a variety of characters that work well. As with the first I found the book well written the story flows along smoothly making it easy to loose track of time while reading. Which this series has done a lot to me but it's that's alright it was worth it. As Sparks progresses we see Anya growing as a character from who she started out as in the first book. I highly suggest if your into ghosts and like a good suspense then you should check out Anya's series. I really hope for a third book because I have questions that still need answers.

Why I was missing this week

Happy Saturday!

So this week I expected to blog, but when I arrived to spend time with the family I was internet-less for the week. So I had to write a few reviews from my Iphone that was a nightmare but I got them up. So other then my expected reviews I didn't post anything I felt bad but nothing I could do. Anyway I'm back from Idaho, so much unpacking to do the next few days and then it's time to get ready for the new year. Plus I need to figure out what challenges I want to do and have them ready so lots to keep me busy.

I hope everyone had a great holiday for us it was nice to see the family we don't see very often. However the fourteen hour drive from our home in California to Idaho was really long but I did get a bit of reading done.

I just wanted to take a moment before I start unpacking to let everyone know I didn't forget about you all!!!!

Review

I received Embers as part of the blog tour hosted by Bewitching Book Tours in return for an honest review. Anya is a full time fire fighter investigator and part time ghost removal. Which she's she's trying to distance herself from. She has a elemental familiar named Sparky who happens to find electrical devices facinating. Anya wears Sparky around her neck in the from of a salamander necklace, he was passed down from her mother. Anya is a rare lantern with the gift of being able to eat a spirit however she's not very fond of having the ability. Plus with the added bonus of having a giant salamander around he keeps her from getting close.

When fires start springing up with a carving into the ground Anya seeks out the help of a friend who happens to be a witch for more information on the carving. With the help of a ghost in the latest fire she learns that the carving is done by the firebugs hand, but he's eaten before he can tell her more by the firebug she's chasing after. He get's away but not before he can leave her a message counting down the days leading her to believe he's attempting to summon a ancient dragon. When Anya attempts to eat a demon who is possessing a girl she finds herself with a not so nice demon of her own. When her ghost group can't get rid of Mimi she seeks out the enemy for help. Will Anya be able to get rid of her demon and stop him before it's to late.

I really enjoyed reading about Anya she's my first character that deals with ghosts. I've always been a little on the leary side when it comes to ghosts but I think I after reading Ember I may have a new favorite. I like the concept of Anya's character being a Lantern someone who can eat spirits, for me it's a new concept that I feel was executed well. Anya is joined by a elemental familiar even though he can't talk and he's a large salamander he adds a lot to the story which I found just makes it better. The story is created in such a way it's easy to get lost in, I had a hard time taking a break because I wanted to learn more about Anya and read about Sparky. I almost want to get a salamander and name him Sparky because I'm so fond of the character he makes me laugh. Embers is an amazing debut urban fantasy filled with character you can't help connecting with. I can't wait to start the next book in the series and may even stay up super late tonight. Embers is one of those series I highly suggest that everyone who likes the urban fantasy should check out.

At the time, I don’t know that the end of Outside had happened  None of us really did. We knew that something was wrong, of course.That knowledge trickled in slowly, like a leak in a roof. The signs accumulated, and then there was no denying the dark stain spreading over the pale ceilings of our world.

Review

I received The Hallowed Ones in return for an honest review as part of the blog tour hosted by Bewitching Book Tours. Kate is living in an Amish community where she is eagerly anticipating her upcoming Rumspringa. She has big plans to journey to the outside with her best friend Elijah when the end of the Outside changes their lives. Kate has been saving money in a box that Elijah made her for the day when they get to experience the Outside world. Kate isn't ready to give up her comic books, soda, or the chance to visit a movie.

Kate raises golden retriever puppies that she sells with the help of an outsider Ginger Parsall,saving the money for when they get to experience the Outside world before they are baptized in the church. It’s while Mrs. Parsall is visiting that a medical helicopter crashes into one of their fields. Kate attempts to rescue the pilot but he’s pulled back into the cockpit by a creature with red eyes seconds before the helicopter blows up. Mrs. Parsall attempts to call for help from the outside but they never show up, leaving the Amish to take care of the fire.It’s when Mrs. Parsall is leaving that they learn that a curfew has been issued not to be out after dark. Since her husband is out to sea and children grown she accepts that offer to stay the night.

 When a trip to the Outside offers little information of what happened to Elijah’s brothers the bishop decides to close the gate prohibiting anyone from leaving. Kate learns from Mrs. Parsall’s cell phone that only 1/3 of the earth’s population is left. Something is lurking in the darkness, and when she travels to the city to find batteries and antibiotics for the young man she saved. It’s while she’s looking for her favorite soda that she happens to find a swarm of the red eyed creatures that have killed so many.Even though the danger is lurking outside the gate, someone invites it in,putting them all at risk.

I found The Hallowed Ones to be very creepy but in an awesome way. It’s one of those books that will have you thinking what if this really happened. I've not read a lot about the Amish community so Kate’s life was very interesting to read about. This was my first book by Laura Bickle so I was super excited because I've heard so much about it. I really enjoyed the writing style the story flows along smoothly it’s easy to get lost in the story.  Kate is one of those characters you can’t help liking she’s strong, smart, and has a good heart which I find important when I want to connect with a character. It’s funny when I was reading The Hallowed Ones I was driving home for the holidays plus it was dark out so that made the story even creepier. I kept telling my husband what was going on in the story and he would startle me causing me to jump in the car. I love books that scare me but I tend to avoid reading them on a desolate highway in the dark during the middle of the night. I like that the story is clean so younger teens will enjoy it as well as adults. I enjoyed the concept it’s a unique take on vampires which I found refreshing that they aren't romanticized like other books. I loved the ending of The Hallowed Ones if anything it left me dying to read the next one because I’m not good at waiting to know what-happens-next.

Opening Teaser

When she arrived on Lexie’s doorstep, Liz expected a warm welcome from her best friend. But when she entered the house, she only heard a mournful wail coming from deep within the basement. Instantly, she was alarmed. Her mind went through a list of possible scenarios before assuming Maxim hogtied his family for laughing at his unibrow or something else perturbing.
When she worked her way down the creaking steps, Liz found Ruby buck naked and shaking violently next to the crumpled form of her new husband, Dragos. Ruby tried using her old flannel nightgown to stop the bleeding from her husband’s lethal wounds – but it was hopeless. The man was clearly dead.

Review 

I received Blood Twist in return for a honest review as part of the tour hosted by SupaGurl Book Tours  Blood Twists starts right after the end of Fate Fixed.  When Lexie moved to Maine she left her best friend Liz behind but was able to send a cryptic email before her internet was taken away from her as punishment. Liz knew she couldn’t live without her best friend and knew her best friend needed her, with a little push she was able to talk her aunt Bev into letting her drive up to Maine to check on her which she ended to bring her back and if she wouldn’t come she would stay with her.  However she expected a warm welcome when she arrived at Lexie’s home not to find her mother in the basement covered in blood with two slain werewolves or that Lexie had survived being almost killed by her crazy stepbrother who also was a werewolf. Thankfully Lexie was saved by her dream guy and now fated soulmate.

After everything that happened Ruby hasn’t recovered from being sick, which they learn after moving everyone to the coven’s homes that her body is fighting Lycanthropy which she got from her now dead husband. Ella isn’t thrilled with the fact that the youngest of her step brothers Nick has run off with whom she’s grown close to. However her problems are the least of everyone’s worry as Ruby continues to grow worse as they search for a cure. When Braden the oldest of the cousin’s claims he knows where to find the cure Liz demands to go with him intent on not letting anything happen to Ruby since she has been like a mother to her. Both Braden and Liz have their own secrets and reasons for setting out to get the cure however Braden’s may be a little darker. Together the pair will deal with challenges that will test themselves, secrets from the past, risk their lives for love and find that one thing they both have been missing all their lives.

OMG So much love for the Erris series. I was lucky enough read them back to back so the first was fresh still in my mind. I love the supernatural world blending over into the real world. Liz is my favorite because she has read a whole selection of vampire books then gets to meet the real deal. However I like that we have a half-vampire which are the Erris Coven who I love, then we have what most people expect when you say vampires. Both of their back stories are filled with sadness which made me all the happier to see them together. Blood Twist is a fast paced story fill with mystery and intrigue that captivated me till the end.  I actually stayed up super late just to know how the book would end, which it was worth the less sleep. The books are well written very smooth they just flow along so it’s easy to get lost in the story and lose track of time. I highly suggest if you love paranormal romance giving them a try they won’t disappoint. The Erris Coven Series has found a place in my heart as one of my all-time favorites.  I can’t wait to read the next book I’m hoping to learn more about Cian and Brooke in the next book since they have been teasing me.

About the Author

Bonnie Erina Wheeler is a lifelong resident of New England and a University of Connecticut student.

Having grown up in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, Bonnie discovered her love of writing early on, but did not begin writing novels until May 2011. As the daughter of author, Glen William Ruane, storytelling and world building is a family affair. Bonnie’s daughter, Miranda E. L. Wheeler and son, Robert D. Wheeler, share in the family’s passion and have both published in the last twelve months.

When not in class or working on her next novel, Bonnie enjoys spending time with her husband, Jerry. Together the two have been writing their own special love story since marrying in April of 1995. Their children Miranda, Justin, and Bobby give them great joy. Their family is made complete with the addition of Petey, a Spanish water dog, they adopted from their local pound.

Bonnie’s plans for the future include writing more novels in the Erris Coven Series, as well as, writing several contemporary young adult novels that have been in development for some time.
