Review - The Ward

Title - The Ward
Author - Jordana Frankel
Series - The Ward
Genre - YA Dystopian
Format - Hardback
Published April 30th 2013
Publisher Katherine Tegen Books

Synopsis

Sixteen-year-old Ren is a daredevil mobile racer who will risk everything to survive in the Ward, what remains of a water-logged Manhattan. To save her sister, who is suffering from a deadly illness thought to be caused by years of pollution, Ren accepts a secret mission from the government: to search for a freshwater source in the Ward, with the hope of it leading to a cure.

However, she never expects that her search will lead to dangerous encounters with a passionate young scientist; a web of deceit and lies; and an earth-shattering mystery that’s lurking deep beneath the water’s rippling surface.

Jordana Frankel’s ambitious debut novel and the first in a two-book series, The Ward is arresting, cinematic, and thrilling—perfect for fans of Scott Westerfeld or Ann Aguirre.

Review
Ren lives in the Ward which was once called Manhattan before the tides swelled above sea level flooding the city forcing people to live in the higher buildings. People also developed a sickness called the Blight tumors that eat away at the body which is exactly what’s happening to Ren’s little sister Aven. In order to keep Aven pain free Ren has done some stuff she’s not proud of like agreeing to work for the blues who police the wards. Ren has been sent on a mission to find fresh water since all the people have is rain water that they filter themselves. But working as a mole isn't her only job Ren is also the only girl in the boy dominated mobile racing.

When her mobile malfunctions during a race letting her arch enemy win she discovers what she’s been searching for the whole time fresh water. However this water isn't just fresh water it has healing properties and after sharing a little with Aven it shrinks her tumor down giving her a chance to live but its short lived because the tumor comes back aggressively.  With the help of a new friend a young doctor Ren will embark on a mission to save not just her sister but all the people of the ward. In order to provide the doctor with fresh water she has to return to the source but upon returning she finds it’s gone. As the two learn about the stream they find not only does it have healing properties but immortality which is what the governor is after. In order to save her sister and the people of the ward Ren will have to go against the one person she didn't expect risking it all before time runs out.

Ren is tough she doesn't see herself as the pretty girl, she fights for what she believes in even if it isn't the right choice. She only loves one person her sister Aven who is dying of Blight but that doesn't stop her from pushing herself to the limits to help her.  Ren has two potential love interests Derek her Bookie and Callum the young doctor. At first I wasn't sure about Derek but in the end I see him as perfect even though I love Callum who is willing to die to save Aven. Maybe he'll find a girl in the next book. The supporting characters are awesome they enhance the story some are good while others are bad. You can’t help loving Benny or Terrence or hating Kent, the Governor and chief. I love that Ren has support that she can trust.

I've had The Ward on the shelf since it first came out purchase in Hardback but never got around to reading it. Maybe it’s the cover the water flooding scares me because we live close to the west coast and they always joke about California falling into the ocean. When the chance came up to use The Ward for my goodreads game I jumped at the chance. The book starts a little slow but I didn't have an issue with it the building was well worth it. The story is captivating as the book progresses it just draws you in till you can't put it down. Ren’s story is a fast paced adventure right to the last page, filled with surprises both good and bad that keeps you guessing to the very end. The Ward is post-apocalyptic the author has created a unique concept that captures the imagination. The Ward is a beautifully written story that tears at your heartstrings leaving he read dying for the next book. I've been drawn to dystopian books for a while now and The Ward doesn't disappoint a must read. I would have to say The Ward is my favorite dystopian book this year. My only regret is I waited so long to read the book.

Top Ten Tuesday!

Top Ten Tuesday!
Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke And The Brookish. Who doesn't love lists. They make life easy! And fun!! It's always a never ending topic.

This week's topic is:
Top ten favorite secondary characters
I could see all of these character with their own books.
It's also a tough one for me. I've been trying really hard to not get attached to secondary characters.

Touched Series by Nancy Straight - Beau and Lacy from the second book became my favorite couple next to Cami and Drake. Then again I love all the characters in the Touched series.

Taste Series by Kate Evangelista - Dray is the science nerd but I think he deserves love. I would love to see his happy ever after =D

Maybe it's just early I can only think of two at the moment will have to add to this list during the day.

What are your favorite secondary characters?

Genre - YA Romance Genies

Publisher - Evatopia Press

Synopsis

The discovery of an ancient bottle unleashes a Genie - and the wrath of the Demon Gypsies chasing her...

When Suzette (“Suki”) is released from her bottle by two teen girls, she is more than a bit surprised that a Genie of her calibre is beholden to two average high school students. After dealing with dignitaries and noblemen, however, she believes this will be a welcome break.

Until she discovers the teens’ hidden powers and that one will come to possess the Amulet of Pollox, a necklace that contains the secrets from some of the greatest minds throughout history. Unfortunately, she’s not the only one who notices. The Amulet draws the attention of the two powerful and vengeful Demon Gypsies who have pursued Suki through time and will stop at nothing to snatch the girls and the Amulet.

Suddenly, Suki is not just helping the girls navigate high school crushes, she’s safeguarding them from danger unlike anything they’ve ever known. To make matters more complicated, she must also fight her attraction to James - her protector through the ages - whose sudden arrival threatens her resolve and her heart.

A time-traveling Genie and her unrequited love...

Demon Gypsies with an insatiable quest for power...

And the teen girls whose existence threatens them all.

This is the world of “Released,” book one of The Romani Realms series by Mia Fox, a Young Adult trilogy featuring elements of paranormal romance and steampunk.

Review

I received Released in return for an honest review as part of the tour hosted by B3 Tours. Suzette known as Suki is a Genie in a bottle and has been for centuries. In the past she has inspired men to do great things now she’s been released by two teenage girls who are being stalked by Suki’s enemy Raven and her partner. As Suki attempts to figure out why the girls are special Raven and Phineas try to lure them away so that they can steal the powerful amulet.

Both Charlotte and Samantha may be in high school but they are living on their own so when they happen to open a bottle that releases Suki a powerful Genie good thing start happening like a new place to live and shopping. Yet darkness is looming all around then, even threatening their lives as Samantha is almost killed in an accident. Suki will have to save the girls from Raven the gypsy dead set on revenge. Yet as the girls are different in Suki’s life she also finds a man who sparks her interest stirring new emotions but he has secrets that could change everything. Will Suki be able to stop Raven and save the girls before it’s too late?

Suki is a Genie who married a man who grew bored with her after she had told him stories for 1001 days, where as she was turned into a Genie granted a second life but forced to live in the bottle until someone opens it. Unlike your traditional grant wishes and gone type of Genie she grows attached to those who release her from the bottle, she’s more a muse then a Genie. The girls are interesting, they are a little frustrating but it’s because they aren't your popular girls but in the end I was cheering them on.

I jumped at the chance to read a book about Genies I've always been a fan since “I dream of Genie” which is how I picture Suki. She’s an awesome character I found the concept for her character unique and very interesting plus the little tidbits of history. The girls aren't bad but I felt the spotlight went to Suki which is maybe why I really loved her story. I think the author has done a fantastic job of putting her own little spin on a Genie story. The characters are all engaging you can’t help hating Raven even though her reasons are understandable even though I think she needs to move on. Released is a captivating fast paced story filled with time/realm travel, romance, mystery and enough action to keep you on the edge of your seat. I actually read this one during an afternoon on the beach it’s a perfect way to spend a lazy day. This is my first book by Mia Fox but I’m looking forward to checking out more books. A truly enjoyable read that teens as well as adults will enjoy plus a beautiful cover. What can I say I’m a cover girl love them!

Synopsis

-- Book 2 in the Stitch Trilogy --

It's only been three days, and already everything is different.

Paragon is behind her, but somehow Alessa's life may actually have gotten worse. In a wrenching twist of fate, she traded the safety and companionship of her sister for that of her true love, losing a vital partner she'd counted on for the ordeal ahead. Her comfortable university life is but a distant memory, as she faces the prospect of surviving a bleak winter on the meager remains of a ravaged world. And if she'd thought she'd tasted fear upon seeing a ghost, she was wrong; now she's discovering new depths of terror while being hunted by a deadly virus and a terrifying pack of superhuman creatures thirsting for blood.

And then there are the visions.

The memory-altering "stitch" unlocked something in Alessa's mind, and now she can't shake the constant flood of alien feelings ransacking her emotions. Haunting memories of an old flame are driving a deep and painful rift into her once-secure relationship. And a series of staggering revelations about the treacherous Engineers - and the bone-chilling deceit shrouding her world's sorry history - will soon leave Alessa reeling...

The second installment in the electrifying Stitch Trilogy, Shudder follows Samantha Durante's shocking and innovative debut with a heart-pounding, paranormal-dusted dystopian adventure sure to keep the pages turning.

Review

I received Shudder in return for an honest review as part of the tour hosted by Prism Book Tours. Shudder starts off not long after the end of Stitch. Alessa and Issac have escaped from Paragon sent on a mission by the rebel leader to find a safe place from the rebels in the prison. As Alessa and Issac set out across the winter wasteland they encounter unexpected creatures lurking in the shadows that appear to be part human. As if evading capture and the virus wasn't enough now they have to worry about creatures hunting them.

Alessa is plagued by haunted emotions from the places they visit that have once held people or dead bodies they encounter. The pair never encounters a living human it’s as if the virus has wiped them all out. After months of searching the come across the Raptor facility that will be a perfect place for the rebels forcing them to return to Paragon. After several days of hiking all day they return to where it all started the Paragon facility but getting everyone out won’t be easy and Alessa still needs to find her sister Janie. Will they make it out?

Alessa is still an awesome character, I loved her in Stitch and still lover her in Shudder. I think Issac is a great guy even if he is living in Joe’s shadow. I feel bad for him because Alessa is still harboring feelings for Joe even though they know he’s dead. Issac has a big pair of shoes to fill, but I think it will all work out they have great chemistry. With Shudder we get an insight into several characters in the book showing us different aspect of Paragon.

I've been dying to read Shudder after loving Stitch. I can admit I didn't even read the synopsis because I knew it was a must read. Shudder if filled with surprises around every corner, keeping me guessing till the very end. I find the idea of putting a stitch in the brain to create a new identity with all new memories unique and exciting. While the first book introduces us to the characters and the concept Shudder takes a whole new spin into the dystopian genre. Shudder is well written it captivate the imagination drawing the reader into the characters’ lives. The author has done a brilliant job creating a world filled with action, romance, monsters, and fantastic characters. The characters are easy to connect with and you can’t help cheering them on as the book progresses.  Shudder is a fast paced novel that I was able to read in one evening unable to put it down till the last page. Now I can’t wait to read the next book and see what happens with the rebels and Alessa. A must read for anyone who likes the sci fi genre. The book does have a little steamy romance but not enough I don't see mature teens as well as adults reading.

A chance to dive into the mysteries in Stitch and Shudder

The Mystery!
Review at Here's the Story
When they begin their expedition, Alessa and Isaac assume at first that the virus following the war ravaged civilization, leaving few humans behind. But then why does Alessa keep feeling something following them through the woods? What is the strange noise that Isaac hears at night?  And why does the monster following them leave human footprints in the dirt?

Meanwhile, Nikhil finds himself in solitary confinement in Paragon’s prison. But he finds a friend. That friend turned out to be who I was hoping it would be. (I’m not going to tell you, though. You have to read the book to find out.) To further add to your confusion and need to read this book, I was happy it didn’t go where I thought it was going to go but I was sad that it went where it did. How’s that for cryptic?!

The other point of view that is telling us the story is a young girl whom the scientists/governors in Paragon have named Phoenix. The governors are telling Phoenix all about the way Paragan came to be formed, why the dramas were introduced as entertainment and also the drugs in the food to keep the population from becoming too restless. But are the governors etc telling Phoenix the truth? Even it is partially true why are they telling Phoenix? In fact who is Phoenix? Well "Phoenix" doesn't remember who she is so she doesn't truly know who or what to trust. The governors/leaders of Paragan are planning the destruction of the rebels and intend to use Phoenix to do it.  I can't say anything else or it would give away who Phoenix is.
Excerpt at Willing to See Less

But no one spoke.  In a harsh whisper, he put the final nail in her coffin, slowly and deliberately taking pleasure as his mouth formed each solitary syllable: “Or should she be punished?”
The crowd replied with a deafening roar of condemnation, snarling and howling like a rabid animal just itching for blood.  As the mob whipped itself into a frenzy, she could feel his wry smile branding itself into her back.  His job was done – now all he had to do was watch.
A stinging sensation buried itself in her shoulder.  And then another, in her gut.  And another, on her thigh.
And then she was nothing but pain, every inch of her body pounding with the impact of each jagged rock.
She tried to stand tall, to fight through the agony, but it was too much.  The blows ripped the air from her lungs and she doubled over, trying in vain to shield herself.
Her mind shut off, all conscious thought leaving her body as the crippling ache took over, and some distant part of her prayed quietly for the torture to end.
And then one violent strike connected with her temple, and she was gone.
