Bane Fox knows exactly what he wants in life: financial stability.

He does not want to be homeless.
He does not want to be the president of an HOA.

It’s rather unfortunate he is both of those things.

Oh, and did I forget to mention he has a fake wife?
Yeah, that’s me

I started to pull away from Nola, but she stopped me with a hand on my waist. "Carol's still watching."
I didn't bother pointing out her lie. No one stood in Carol’s window, and Nola hadn't bothered to look over her shoulder to check.
I studied the face in front of me. Her fake smile had been replaced with a soft look as she gazed back into my eyes.
"Okay," I said with a smile. I wrapped an arm around her waist, tugging her closer, our hips brushing against each other.
"How was the little wife's day at work?"
Nola arched a smooth brow. "Little wife? Hmm, I think you're going to have to pick something different."
"How about Mrs. HOA?"
She scrunched her face up as she thought about it. "No, I don't think so. I think I prefer 'Your Highness.'"
She screeched when I ran my fingers up the side of her ribs. She leapt back, smacking at my reaching hand, laughing loudly. "Stop that!"
I made one more half-hearted grab for her. She glared at me. "If you tickle me, I won't share my pizza!"
I held both hands in the air in surrender. "When you say pizza, you mean..."
She narrowed her eyes at me as she opened the minivan door. "I mean pepperoni and cheese."
I shrugged. "Can't blame a guy for trying."
She passed the pizza to me, shut the car door, then smacked my butt as she jogged by.
I really wished our relationship was real. Maybe it could be.

That was the headline for the Cooper's Cove charity auction, and here I was, newly single and down to almost my last penny. I signed up, not even thinking that my friend, and local billionaire, Hayden Anderson, might actually bid on me.

Until he didn’t.

Hayden

My entire life had been spent dodging women who only wanted me because I was wealthy. Except Eliza Shepard. She didn’t care that I was rich. When it came time for the auction, I didn’t want to muddy the waters of our friendship with money. Especially because what I felt for her went beyond friends.

Had I ruined everything?

I meandered through the crowd, saying hello to several people I knew, until I came to an abrupt halt. Across the room, standing alone against a window, was the woman who rarely left my mind. Eliza was absolutely stunning. The royal blue dress hugged her every curve. The neckline was modest and it nearly reached her ankles, but the color was perfect on her and only made her beautiful eyes pop with color. I could count on one hand the number of times I’d ever seen her hair down. Tonight, it spilled over her shoulders in soft waves.
As though sensing my gaze, her eyes locked on mine and my heart stuttered inside my chest at the wide smile she sent my way. My feet led me over to her.
“Good evening. You look…wow.” My eyes continued to take her in.
A bright pink dashed across Eliza’s cheeks. “Aren’t you the flatterer.” She nervously smoothed her dress down her stomach. “Are you sure I look okay? Ava and I went panic shopping today, because I didn’t have anything suitable in my closet. I didn’t want to be underdressed, but I also didn’t want to go too extravagant.”
Catching her fingers in my hand, I brushed my lips across her knuckles staring into her eyes. “You’re absolutely perfect.”

“Lo, what is this?” Finn motions his hand between us.
His question, which I knew he would eventually ask, catches me off guard. My shoulders instantly tense, just like they did when he approached me at the wedding. My throat goes dry, unsure of how to answer. I slowly spin to face him, and when our eyes meet, I see they are full of vulnerability just as they were when he asked me to marry him.
“I want—” He stops and runs his fingers through this hair. “You know what? Never mind what I want.” His voice is quiet as he takes a step closer. “What do you want?”
He tucks a stray hair behind my ear—a move so simple, yet natural for us.
My gaze drops from his eyes to his lips. It would be so easy to grab the back of his neck and pull his lips to mine. “I…I…” The words “I want you” are on the tip of my tongue, but I’m scared. The vision of Finn walking away in the airport is enough for me to settle on “I…I don’t know,” instead.
He exhales loudly and grips the back of his neck as he takes a step backward. This is different than last time, Lauren, I tell myself over and over. You both aren’t the same people anymore. “Lauren, I know exactly what I want, and when you figure out what you want, call me. I’m not going anywhere, I promise. Until then…”
Finn takes one step forward and then another before he is standing right in front of me, and his lips press against mine. This kiss is gentle, but I can feel it from the top of my head to the tips of my toes and everywhere in between.
I want to grip his shirt and deepen the kiss—to know what Finn tastes like after all these years, but he breaks the kiss first. He places a quick kiss against my forehead. “I’ll be seeing you, Lo.”
And with that, he is gone before I even open my eyes. I am then left alone on my front porch wanting more—wanting Finn, to be exact.

I didn’t know what woke me, but then I heard the knock. Glancing at the clock, it was after three in the morning. I climbed from bed, grabbed my gun and moved to the door. Peeking out, Kade was standing there.
I didn’t even think, unlocking and opening the door because I was still working on why the hell Kade was at my door at three in the morning. Then I saw his face. He was pissed. He stepped into my apartment, closed and locked the door behind him. I stood in my tank and boy shorts, my gun forgotten in my hand staring at Kade Wakefield in my little apartment.
“We didn’t finish our conversation.” His voice was deceivingly soft.
“It didn’t seem like we were having one.”
“What did you feel?”
“Why do you care?” I wasn’t trying to be flippant, but the man had to give me something.
There was that knot at his jaw. “I took Emerson to the ballet because if you’re right about your theory, I’m being watched, too. And it wouldn’t do for anyone to know that a certain homicide detective has gotten under my skin, that I can’t go a day…” He moved and not controlled like usual, but restless, like a caged tiger. “Fuck, I can’t go an hour without thinking about your taste and how I want more of it.” He stopped pacing and looked me right in the eyes, his own looking like the calm before the storm. “I fucking want you, Molly Donahue, and I don’t want anyone knowing just how much.” He stepped right into my personal space. “Because that puts you at risk.”

A door slammed, and he rose. Was she going to try to sneak away? They were on a base for Christ’s sake. He grabbed the shirt he’d discarded and took a step toward the door, but it flew open before he reached it.
He almost winced at the anger rolling off her. Damn, but if she wasn’t the most beautiful woman he’d ever laid eyes on. Even angry. There was just something about this woman.
And he hated himself for thinking of her like that. Yes, he was a straight, virile man, but he was also a special operator in the military who knew how to keep his dick in his pants, even if his cock refused his orders, too.
“I got your favor right here.”
She yanked her arm back and swung in his direction. He didn’t see what she had in her hand, but he deflected whatever it was she threw at him. She yelled as she charged. Pissed off women weren’t part of his combat training, but his skills kicked in anyway. He grabbed her arm and spun her around, holding her by her midsection against his body. She kicked out, her foot connecting with the door, making it slam so hard the walls shook. She gasped out in sound of pain, and he barely had time to notice her shoes were off because the infuriated woman had managed to gain enough force when she connected with the door that he lost his footing. Axle tripped over his boots, and he landed on his back on the bed, still holding her to him. She flailed, but he refused to lessen his grip.
“Caitlin.”
“I hate you!”
All right, then. He twisted to his side and managed to turn her so that her back was on the mattress, and he rolled on top of her. He grabbed her arms and pinned them above her head.
She growled, and he slapped his halfway free hand over her mouth. It wasn’t really the best position to be in, her beneath him, writhing, but damn. What choice did he have? “Would you calm down?” he said through his teeth. Her movements were making him stir until he became excruciatingly hard.
She slowed, but her breath sawed in and out of her body, forcing her breasts to mash against him. Jesus, he did not need to be thinking about her body when she was pinned beneath him.
On a bed.
While he lost yet another battle with his wayward dick.
After several agonizing seconds, she completely relaxed, and he chanced moving his hand. When she didn’t scream, he pulled it away to prop himself up a little higher, creating some space between their heaving bodies. Though his hadn’t been because of exertion.
At least not yet.
No. He had to focus here. He looked to the side, willing his mind to work, and saw the object she’d hurled at him.
“If you get this pissed when you run out of ink, I’d hate to see how you handle road rage.”
She glared wordlessly.
“When I told you it was a weapon, I didn’t think you’d try using it on me.”
Still nothing. And he was glad her hands were secured far away from his gun.
He sighed, dropping his forehead on top of hers, losing the hardest battle of his life—resisting her. “I’m sorry,” he breathed. “I was a jerk.”
The seconds ticked by, and somehow, he found himself closer to her. He was strong enough to hold himself up, but the strength currently in control wasn’t led by his external abilities, overriding the power in his arms. And he’d quickly learned that he had no mental or emotional control when it came to this woman. It was some other force within calling the shots.
“You’ve been a jerk since I got here,” she said, but there wasn’t any fire in her words.
He had his eyes closed. A last-ditch effort to put some distance between them. He knew if he opened them now, he would be a goner.
“You drive me insane, baby.”
Her breath bathed his face, and his mouth dropped closer to inhale the luscious scent that was her. All her. He shouldn’t be doing this. He should not be holding her down on his bed. He knew this. He fucking knew this.
He couldn’t move away. Every time he shifted, thinking he was creating space, he was drawing nearer to her.
“Axle,” she breathed. His name leaving her mouth caused her lips to brush against his. That was how close they’d gotten.
And it wasn’t close enough.
