Synopsis

Space germs wipe out virtually everyone who has passed through puberty.

Abby Leigh is looking forward to watching the moon turn purple. For months, astronomers have been predicting that Earth will pass through the tail of a comet. They say that people will see colorful sunsets and, best of all, a purple moon.

But nobody has predicted the lightning-fast epidemic that sweeps across the planet on the night of the purple moon. The comet brings space dust with it that contains germs that attack human hormones. Older teens and adults die within hours of exposure.

On a small island off the coast of Maine, Abby must help her brother and baby sister survive in this new world, but all the while she has a ticking time bomb inside of her -- adolescence.

Review

I received this book in return for a honest review. Abby, Jordan, and Toucan wake up the day after the purple moon to find that all the adults and teenagers are dead. Anyone who had gone through puberty is dead, so their once active neighborhood is now quiet. The trio meets up with the neighbors Kevin and Emily who have also lost their parents. Kevin is a computer wiz and starts working on trying to find out what is going on. While Jordan and Emily take off to find others like them.

The group grows to twenty eight survivors on the island, so they move into one of the mansions on the bay. The group sets up daily chores taking care of a little farm with chickens and two dairy cows. They also split up taking care of the garden and the younger children. They continue to listen for updates on the CDC status of a antibiotic to remove the space germs. Unfortunately the antibiotic isn't coming fast enough, those who reach puberty are dying and they fear that time is running out.

Even though they have the threat of not making it past puberty the group try to remain optimistic and to keep things happy. After almost a year they get word that the antibiotic is going to come out May 1st all they have to do is make it to Boston. Abby and Jordan set out on the little sail boat headed to Boston. They have already heard stories about the violence from gangs on the mainland.

The story had me gripped me from the start and didn't let go till I was done. The story kept me on my toes, to me it felt so real, I kept asking my hubby what if this happened.
Abby and Jordan even little Toucan pulled at my heartstrings right from the start. I felt so connected to the kids in the story that when sad things happened I found myself getting all teary. The characters in this book grow up so fast you almost forget that they are pre-teen, as much in their lives has changing. I feel the characters are well developed, that you have a connection to them, and a loss to them feels like a loss to me too.

I think this book should be a must read for everyone, I think everyone will take something from it as I did.  It's a beautiful story about what if you woke up and all the adults and teenagers were gone and it was just the kids. I honestly was a little nervous because I have a harder time connecting with super young kids, but they don't act or talk like young children. I loved reading this book, it just grips you in, it seems so real, and makes you what if. I love a book that leaves me thinking about it after I'm done, and this one is doing just that.
